A trick used to work out how much silicone and/or casting resin to use is to fill the void with rice then pout the rice used into a measuring cup. This gives you a good approximation.
@JustCallMeMeghanКүн бұрын
Us resin artists use water to do that as well! Just fill the mold with water, then pour the water into an empty measuring cup. Just make sure the mold is fully dry before pouring resin in, obviously. Lol.

Is the spray can oil based? Are you getting a separation/rejection from the spraycan base & the latex?
@VanOaksProps2 күн бұрын
Nope, just your standard acrylic based spray paint. The latex doesn't completely adhere to the layers below and so it's easy to peel away to create the effect

I wonder if this could be sealed with some clear coat to make it last longer or make it more permanent? What do you think?
@VanOaksProps3 күн бұрын
I don’t know. My assumption is that any kind of clear coat would disturb the salt crystals but I’ve never tested it to prove that theory.

You came up when I looked for faux peeling paint. I love what you did!!! Could I do this on paper??
@VanOaksProps5 күн бұрын
It would need to be really stiff paper and you’d want to put down some kind of protective layer on the paper to prevent it from getting soggy and tearing during the peeling stage.

so sad I missed this, but so glad you asked my question! Regarding hitting the Star Wars props and aesthetics, what parts do you think are important?
@VanOaksProps6 күн бұрын
It's a lot about the shapes used to create motifs. So think about the square tiles and white pinstripes that are everywhere on the Death Star, or the wires and tubes and small bits that make up most of the props in rebel areas. Carrying those aesthetics into the work will help to tie it into the larger established universe.
@SirYEET2426 күн бұрын
would you please be able to make a motorised one? I'm getting a 3d printer soon and I would love to make a motorised BD-X droid but I can't find anything else online on how to do it. plus it would make a great video and introduce other people like me into the world of 3d printed robotics. thank you:)

Slept through this, oh well… waited to watch because I wanted to read the live chat replay. My questions are 1) how / where do you find the inspiration for your props? 2) do you allow fans to send prop suggestions or reference pictures / videos outside of them commissioning you and if so, where could I send a handful of ideas with references for them?
@VanOaksProps7 күн бұрын
Halloween inspiration usually comes from looking at photos of old cemeteries or things I’ve seen when visiting old cemeteries. Everything else is just from looking at sci-fi and pop culture movies and tv. As for suggestions, you can message me via my website vanoaksprops.com

Great job! Watching the very last frames of the video I realised what is lacking with this stone to make it perfect - some dirt and moss. ALL the old boulders have some algae and moss on them. And BTW - what if instead of wet paper towels you used some cloth/fabric soaked in plaster of Paris - would'nt the final thing be more solid? Just thinking.
@VanOaksProps7 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, some dirt and moss would’ve been a good addition. As for using fabric, absolutely. I don’t know if plaster of Paris would be strong enough at that thin of an application but monster mud might be a good option to minimize cracking

I love your take on the Star Wars aesthetic… I’ve always called it “high tech junk” because most things are sand-beaten and repaired and modified over the years so they lose a lot of the original sleekness of the design… which is a challenge because you’re making something new that still works but it has a rough history.

I love your videos. Only thing is I wish a had a 3d printer. I am making a 12v power system for my lights for Christmas and I’ll use it for Halloween next year too. I couldn’t find any 2 pin BTF cables to work with my pigtails so I’m having to make them from scratch, using pigtails on each end

Question for all of you. I’m looking to make 8ft or so castle walls. The only foam I can find has the aluminum cover. Would it work the same?

It’s a different type of foam and you’d need to peel off the covering, but it can be carved and painted the same way.

@@VanOaksProps That’s my biggest sadness is that my neighborhood has started to get more involved on Halloween but I never get to see it! Luckily I have an HOA that holds a contest every year (that I don’t win because my haunt doesn’t really get going until the day, but I’m cool with it) so I get to see pictures 🧡🖤 But I want to add I have started getting more and more neighbors stopping to chat (and my friend can hand out candy while I’m talking to older kids and adults), but my favorite is the little ones who REMEMBER my house and my skeletons from year to year… and this year I told a few kids the secret of what they’re going to be doing next Halloween, which got them excited!

You're applying it too heavily. It's got to be super thin coats and if you find the surface to be tacky after application, wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol between layers.
