The RV-8 and RV-14a are my favorite Vans by far. It's tempting to pick up a used RV-8 and build an RV-14a. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

There by Air did you ever end up getting your RV?
@goatflieg9 жыл бұрын
Excellent. First RV-8 video I've seen that includes the running commentary of standard procedures. Enjoyed this a lot, and will watch it often. I'm done with my RV-8 empennage, and hope to be making similar videos of my own in less than two years. Feel free to message me, and maybe I'll see you at OSH...

Ed. Thanks for documenting the whole flight that was great. Two questions. Why are hot starts so difficult? Also what are your thoughts on buying a used RV eight versus the quick build?
@ejsoder5 жыл бұрын
To each his own but buying a used plane with a good inspection from another RV owner/Builder will get you in the sky faster. Some guys like to build more than fly. Which is you? Hot starts are not usually difficult when done right. I over primed in the vid.

Nice plane. Im considering building the RV8 or the 14 myself, but there has to be a way to get rid of the alternator whine in the headset.
@edsoderblom55328 жыл бұрын
Ya, I can hear it on the video but I can't here it in my headset when I am flying. Sorry. You will not go wrong with the RV series of aircraft. This plane is going to be tough to top regarding "Total Performance". Thanks, Ed

Those warnings would drive me nuts!:-) The simplicity of flying seems to be a thing of the past with small light planes being flown like an airliner:-) One thing I never do is fly 3 deg's in a light plane, no need for it, too risky especially over built up area on the App to the rwy.
@edsoderblom55328 жыл бұрын
Copy that. The problem is that I do fly it as my personal airliner and utilize it in all weather conditions. I want a quick heads up on every condition if something is not correct. I fly the simple, no electric system aircraft also and it is safe to say that I never fly a 3 deg. approach in that.
@endwood8 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But after 38 yrs of driving planes I'd never fly a SE plane in anything other than VMC conditions, personal choice I guess. I'd love an RV8 but shall have to stick with my 7ECA fun machine where you have to fly the plane due low HP especially in Aero's:-)

When you buy a used experimental do you have issues with getting it inspected once a year? My understanding most A&P don't want the liability so you have to go back to the original builder to do the inspection.
@edsoderblom55328 жыл бұрын
No problems at all. I have had many certified as well as experimental planes and it is no problem finding guys to do the inspections. Your fear is unfounded.
@GSXED3 жыл бұрын
The warnings... don't know how you do it. I pull the stall warning fuse to give you an idea.
@fingerhorn45 жыл бұрын
Lovely aircraft. A point is reached where those excruciatingly loud warnings and flashing red lights are utterly counter-productive, kicking in at critical concentration moments where you are flying perfectly well. There is evidence that such warnings actually serve to create panic and stress of exactly the kind that might be more likely to lead to an accident than if those warnings weren't there. Noise cancelling headphones are also partly to blame, because all the subtle sound queues are lost (like airflow sounds), and they also mean warnings have to be ridiculously loud. Recognising impending stalls through visceral means (floppy controls, high AoA and wind noise dying away) is far more useful than these ghastly artificial loud warnings which just raise your blood pressure. A warning sound is actually more effective if it is quieter.

Any idea how to address the window fogging besides wiping it off? Can you run heater line up there?
@edsoderblom55328 жыл бұрын
If I were building one I would take the time to hook up a defroster as I fly in rainy weather all of the time. You can get away without one however and that is why I have not taken the time...maybe someday.
@ashsmitty22447 жыл бұрын
Use soap to wash the windscreen. It will stop fogging

Hi Ed, nice video! May I ask you what that instrument is over top of your engine panel (The one with the red and greed lights, and 4 white buttons)?
@edsoderblom55328 жыл бұрын
It is an EC-100, an electronic checklist and cautionary system that enhances the VM1000 engine monitor.

@mellokeith7 жыл бұрын
Nice video. What engine /prop combination are you using?
The worst part of a modern panel is … all the alerts at the worst possible times. As a 6 pack pilot, all that stuff is annoying

This is my kind of flying video, NO MUSIC. So many pov flying videos are ruined by shoddy music that not only doesn’t sound good, it makes it more difficult to hear the radio chatter. Adding the music may sound good to the uploaded when they post the video on KZbin, but imo it ruins it for the viewers.

Your right, how ever, this plane is equipped with an instant low oil pressure alarm that would have told me but yes, #1 important thing to check after startup.
@walterriely40326 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't rely on any alarm other then yr own eyes! I never trust an alarm, I like to actually see the gauge move within seconds

Good grief. Talk about annoying warnings. Couldn’t handle that nonsense on short final on a regular basis.
@chrisniner87725 жыл бұрын
I would not fly such a low angle approach and drag it with the flaps down. If you ever lose engine power your going to be in the trees. I have 625 or so hours..over half of those in an rv6a 180 horse with constant speed and LASAR ..
