I've noticed most of the birds at my FBO do a climbing turn away from me in the pattern. Beautiful plane and nice vid. I'm considering taking on the massive project of building one of these.

Cool video. One comment - I usually choose the fullest tank before startup, and then stay with it through taxi, run-up, and takeoff. I've heard of cases where a change was made just before takeoff, and it caused an outage. I'm thinking of the case where there is a bit of water in the tank, and if you stay with that tank you probably have time to see if there is an impact before takeoff.
@timothyirvine28424 ай бұрын
I was taught taxi out on the lowest tank. Then as you stock check area clear, brakes holding and change tanks. Then do the run up and all the check on the tank you going to take off on. That should be enough time to pick up an issue with fuel. It should be enough time to pick up something like water etc.

I like that we can here the engine in addition to hearing you talk; no music playing. Is the RV8 pretty low maintenance? I realize all aircraft, experimental or certified, will require maintenance here and there, but I don’t wish to buy an experimental aircraft to have a bunch of parts strung out in a garage. I just want to FLY the thing for an affordable price (most certified aircraft as capable as an RV8 would cost well over $300k, whereas a good used RV can be found for under $100k).
@timothyirvine28423 жыл бұрын
I am a "weekend warrior" and fly about 40 hours a year on the RV. I got her in July 2014 and I have had very few issues. Once the fuel pressure was reading low and it turned out the earthing needed tightening and the reading was restored. Based on my flying she gets serviced once a year, but otherwise, as one would hope and expect, she is as reliable as a modern day car. She is not certified, but all parts and engine are stock standard and well tried and tested in the industry. While still classified as experimental, all parts used are tried and tested and so far very reliable. Thats why the RV is a good choice - there are a lot of them around. My insurance recognises that in the premium with the RV relative to other experimental aircraft.

It’s a great plane, keep looking and don’t settle for anything but an 8. The best ever (I am biased). Besides normal flying, you will see from my videos she is good for cross country, light aeros and formation flying. I see in the states you seem to be taught to read off a physical checklist, here in SA we generally memorize it - I think you just proved your system is better! In an emergency some of it to memory is good.

funny you should say that. I bought ZU ICE from the person who built her and she arrived the plain blue. I then saw the P51 Mustang "Beautiful Doll" and got the checks etc painted just like her. So she has a touch of the P51. Low wing is great to fly and the RV8 is just superb.

@timothyirvine28424 жыл бұрын
you absolutely right. From making the videos and watching myself afterwards I see mistakes. Practically I fly VFR with lots of land features, but a bad habit crept in with me not setting the DG. If I was to get value for money for the instruction, you would have pointed out I didnt call out flaps right after I checked the fuel ... :). Bad habits creep in and I find my renewal with my instructor eye opening as they will always have something to teach me or re-teach me, whether it is procedural, or a "have you thought about this?" type question.

its a fixed pitch prop and its enough to comfortably get her off my home runway
@paulrenny83883 жыл бұрын
@@timothyirvine2842 Yes, it certainly is getting you airborne but something still doesn't seem right. The engine should make about 100 RPM below redline on a static run, unless the DA is really high. Are you flying out of a high elevation? If not, then it might be worth asking your mechanic about it. Could be prop is not the correct pitch or something not quite right with the engine setup. Might be something quite simple.

@@paulrenny8388 not uncommon with RV's, I can get just over 2200rpm on a static run, were I to get within 100RPM of redline the engine would overspeed in cruise! these RV's are made to cruise fast, and a coarse "Cruise" prop will limit the static RPM
@jcheck62 жыл бұрын
@@paulrenny8388 Not true Paul. I have a FP O-360 -8 and get 2180 static and will slightly overspeed at 2800 at full throttle. Tim's static RPM is perfect.
