One of these things dropped out of low cloud on a rainy day in the Scottish Highlands and flew right at me . At first I thought it was an F 111 but it just kept getting bigger . Lord knows how it was navigating the mountainous terrain in that visibility . I've always wondered whether I was supposed to have seen it at all . It was flying down Loch Cluanie and I was on my motorbike on the A 87 . A sight I'll never forget .

Ive been on the the ground standing at the runway hold line at the aircraft 4 clock during while deployed once . within 100-150 ft. maybe. full afterburner. you literally feel like the air is being pulled out of your lungs. threre's no level of hearing protection i know of that works well enough to stop the sound resonating through your body. those flames are absolutely hotter than hell. and damn do they shoot out the back a long way.

13 year AF veteran. Worked on C-130's at Dyess AFB for 9 years. Parked next to KC-135's, and B-1b's. I have seen multiple shows of the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and The Red Arrows. All great... but my favorite aerial demonstrations, was a lone F-15, and the B-1. People don't realize how large the B-1 is. its shape belies its size. Nothing is cooler than the anticipation of a B-1 doing a long circle around an airfield, (its size means you never lose sight of it, even 10 miles out), knowing he is lining up for the "high speed pass". That simple maneuver is a thing of beauty, especially when they yank it, and go about 80 degrees up, and flip it over for a smooth half loop. You just don't expect an aircraft that large to pull that off. Plus the chest pounding roar of 4 F-101 engines. Love it. Almost as awesome as the smooth hum of the C-130 turboprops... :)

Memories of my first tour at Edwards, '82-'86. Avionics troop in the B1 CTF, standing about 5 feet behind the left wingtip of Ship 1 during a late twilight 4 engine AB run around 1985. Earplugs and headset on and mouthpiece over my mouth even though I wasn't on comm. It helped reduce the sound getting into your skull through your teeth. Four 30 foot blue flames and shock diamonds. The concrete of the old XB-70 run pad shaking under your feet, you feel your bones shaking. Thinking if you leaned forward you'd just skitter across the surface without taking steps like some kind of stop motion animation. Almost 35 years on I have tinnitis... yeah, but I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Along with my wife and stepdaughter, I was traveling on vacation in the Jeep Cherokee on the back gravel roads in the high plains of northeastern Montana through the oilfields one August morning in 1987. It was cool and cloudy out, about 50F, with a low deck of overcast. We were cutting cross-country over an oilwell-studded landscape of long rolling grassy hills toward the Canadian border and going 45 mph or so. Just rumbling along, driving in relative peace. All of a sudden we were accosted with a rapidly escalating, screaming, ripping roar at our immediate left that grabbed my full, frightened attention. With both hands white-knuckled on the wheel, I turned to see the dark grey profile of the nose of this amazing bomber coming out of the cloud deck right at us no more than two hundred feet up and only one or two hundred yards away! A SCREAMING WHAM and it went right over us with full AB's lit up shooting 50' blue flames out the back and with the wings very quickly swinging back into a vee as it ascended back into the clouds and disappeared .... SHEEEIT! ... We three were completely stunned speechless. The demon craft must have been crossing over us in excess of 600 mph. We had been radar-targeted and subjected to a “virtual” blasting into smithereeens like an Iraqi tank. Only, thank God Almighty and those Badass BONE Pilots, it was only a practice run. I pity those enemy Tank commanders out on a lonely road in the outback of the Iraqi desert sands. If ever under attack by this beastly spectre they would have only a couple of fearfully defenseless seconds of warning and only moments to say bye-bye to this world on their way to seeing their 77 toothless virgins.

In 1987 I was framing a porch on a house on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and a B1 bomber passed by us about 200 feet back from us and about 50 feet off the ground. We were 20 feet up on pump jacks and we barely had to look up at him. He was no more than 30 feet above us and like I said about 200 feet out from us. We could clearly see the pilots. They were cruising as slow as they could go without falling out of the sky. I sure wish cell phones were around back then. I would give a whole paycheck to have gotten footage of that.

Saw one of these at Mildenhall Air Fete in 2001 and the vibrations from it literally gave my camcorder the jitters and affected the tape mechanism!

What I love about the B-1, its a bomber that was never told by its flight crew that it wasnt a fighter jet.

Was checking, the B-1A does Mach 2.3 @ 50K ft, but the B-1B does only Mach 1.25 and is limited by the need to avoid damage to its structure and air intakes. Thanks for the great footage.

There's not a more bad ASS bomber out there! Sweep wing technology, afterburn capable and can reach mach 1.3 at that size along with being highly maneuverable is a recipe for an awesome military jet!
