Vapour Barrier Installed Correctly - Walls and Cold Roofs
Air vapour control layers are so called as they control two things:
Air movement
Vapour movement
If you install an Air Vapour Control Layer (AVCL) that's exactly what you're trying to do, so if you don't install it correctly then it won't work correctly and you are defeating the object. If the AVCL you are installing is plastic and GREEN then it is an industry standard AVCL - the fact that it's green is the big clue. If it's blue, black or transparent then it's not an AVCL. If you buy an AVCL you must install it correctly and use the correct tapes for the system to work correctly. So many times I see roofs and walls with incorrectly fitted AVCLs, and if they are not fitted correctly they don't work. The tapes that come with any plastic air vapour control layer (AVCL) will probably cost more than the plastic membrane, so don't go by the price of the membrane. When buying an AVCL via the internet, a lot of the online shops don't list the tapes with the membrane, this is not only a pain, but it's also is very misleading. I checked out AVCLs on the internet and, to be quite honest, I can see that it would be really hard for anyone not working within the construction industry to choose the correct membrane and to know the rest of the system that accompanies it!
