What are your thoughts on covering a rubber roof with pebbles to decrease sunlight absorption?

I’m wondering? On the warm roof in this example. Don’t you need to introduce any ventilation on the facia at all?

Hi. Have you done a video where the cross ventilation on the flat roof (garage conversion) is running into a pitched roof of the house. Or a video where there is no space for soffit due to boundary line - vents would have to go under in the facia boards... beneath the gutter level, if at all possible.

Hi Steve. I have a concrete deck flat roof area. The screed was laid with the incorrect falls and I am now trying to rectify this. I have Alutrix 600 laid over the screed as a vapour barrier. The makeup was going to be screed>vapour barrier>insulation>osb>waterproofing. However to rectify the fall, i am wondering can I put in firrings on top of the vapour barrier to get my slope? The proposed make up would then be screed>vapour barrier>firrings>osb>insulation>osb>waterproofing. Will the air gap in the firrings be an issue?

Hi, I’m building a very similar project and will be using metal sheets for the roof, but I was going to felt and batton it like a conventional roof then insulate between rafters.do you think tgg be at would be ok please?Gareth.

Is there any issue with using two different types of insulation. For example I currently have 50mm of fibreglass wool in a cold roof. Wondering if I can stick inculcated plasterboard underneath?

Why would there be a soffit vent on a warm roof. I thought they did not require any air flow. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

@HampsteadBuildersLt 20 күн бұрын
No a warm roof does not have to have venting; however depending on what you are doing you may want to vent the independent space of the soffit

In my experience anyone who calls themselves a builder isnt actually trained or qualified. You need to be at degree level to properly understand the all the areas of construction. I employ the correct trade for each stage not a builder who thinks he knows it all.

Hello Steve, If sheets of 25mm insulation board was placed on the joists before the plaster board would that stop the thermal bridging in relation to the joists.

i have just recently done a cold roof, pitched, vaulted ceiling. the architect specified 170 x45 c16 with 150 Kspan pushed up tight to the underside of sarking with a 3mm gap between boards now 10mm after the sun bashed it for a while, got a breathable membrane and 12mm counter baton and 25mm baton then concrete tile. on underside of rafter he did ask for kingspan kooltherm 118 however client thought this was too expensive and opted for 25mm recticel then a vapour barrier then 12 .5 plasterboard. Have i got something to be worried about in the future???

Yes, the way it’s done is not very good. Placing insulation between the studs is never a perfect job. Some times it’s better to leave larger gaps all the way around the insulation to allow for the foam gun to get in which spreads the foam to seal the gaps better. Obviously, a better job would be to fix full sheets of insulation either to the inside or exterior. That way it eliminates gaps.

Am i missing something, the roof he is working on has been slated from the TOP down. And the battons dont support the slate (eye level). This must be a mock up not a real roof

Hi Steve, Thanks for this. Great advice. I’m looking to convert a garage into a workshop and wondered if an air gap should be between the single skin brick work and insulation? Also, should there be any sort of barrier between the back side of the Insulation and brick wall? Thanks!

Sorry steve, I love your videos and I find them really useful. But can I tuck in the insulation in below a lower deck but above the wall. Or should I should I have the lower deck short of the wall so the tucked in insulation and warm roof insulation meet. FYI it’s having a top decked fitted as well.

Late to the party, but I am a massive pedant, so here goes: 10 minute mark - the U value, or insulation standards, for a flat roof in an extension were 0.18, and the same goes for upgrading an existing flat roof - See Approved Document L1B (2013 + 2016 + 2018 amendments) Table 2 and Table 3. The minimum U value for a flat roof on a new house was 0.20 - the smaller the number the better the standard - See Approved Document L1A, Table 2. So the "basic" insulation requirement for flat roofs was more onerous for extensions and upgrades that it was for a full new build - this is till the case for the current regulations (2021 version) 4.50 minutes - I'm not saying they can't, but interstitial condensation calculations are not really a thing that structural engineers do. Technically, if you have the software, anyone can do them, but understanding the results takes some training. It used to be possible to do them without software, and it was a massive pain in the arse, but as with all things they have become even more complex, so you really need the software - so as Steve says, they are more a thing done by the insulation manufacturers and they should explain the results to you

Could it be possible that the moisture came from the unprotected pitched roof section. The ventilation would draw it up through into the flat roof void.

It's a nice product to use but I can say with absolute certainty that it does not self seal around screw penetrations. I've seen first hand water dripping through these penetrations.

Thanks for your videos. Looking at the "tuck" area with the additional PIR, is foam enough to seal against vapour from leaking out between the PIR and the joist? Is there not a risk of Interstitial condensation somewhere between the warm side and the cold side?
@architecture_A51
@architecture_A51 Ай бұрын
A correction to a statement. Building Science Corp has proven that condensation will only occur when moisture-latent air hits the FIRST cold surface (that has a low enough temperature to produce condensation, ie a BTU transfer)... in rigid insulation, you made a statement using your fingers that it would condensate somewhere within the upper portion of the insulation itself, it simply does not do that, the math equation says it will (which you referenced) along with the computer models, but through extensive testing, it does not. Water "vapor" needs a cold-condensing surface. The rest of your statements are correct. The hard part to deal with is the water vapor and controlling it, since it is very difficult to create a perfect seal. You can create a ventless fully insulated roof but you really need to know what you are doing, Canada learned its lesson on SIP panels years ago, and Building Science Corp solved the issue. Building Science Corp has hundreds of white papers on this issue. GOOD READ for those who do this for a living. Another note is that this is all dependent on the climate zone. Warm moist and Warm dry climates perform differently.
