Liverpool were robbed off all 3 points by Premier League referees and VAR in the final minute of stoppage time against Man City after referee Michael Oliver and VAR Stuart Attwell decided not to award a penalty kick for Jeremy Doku's high boot on Alexis Mac Allister. Following the game, head of Premier League referees Howard Webb went on his show Match Officials Mic'd Up and claimed that Jeremy Doku played the ball first and attempted to explain why his karate kick on Alexis Mac Allister wasn't a foul. Agreed. If VAR is not willing to admit that Oliver had a bad angle and seeing MacAllister got ball first might sway his decision, then VAR has no purpose. The real reason for VAR to exist is to show the referee unambiguous details they likely missed in real time. This is a textbook example. Oliver should have gone to the monitor, because he had incomplete information, regardless of whether the call looked reasonable to the VAR official or not.

As a fan, it's very tough to remain neutral about this, but, after watching the Man City v LFC replay of the disallowed penalty featured in this video, I'm more pissed than I was when it initially happened! Compare this to a previous match. Back in September of 2017, Sadio Mane was shown a red card for a high boot while actually going for a ball against you know who - Man City! Even if you think that Mane's contact with the incoming goalkeeper, Ederson, was unsafe play, you can clearly see that he was watching the ball all the way down. So why, then, is nearly the same type of incident - in which Doku is NOT watching the ball all the way down - deemed safe play? I actually think that the bloke who made this video has a point!

Mr.Webb took the ridiculous position of saying some of the pundits thought it wasn't a penalty. These people are paid to be impartial and the reasons some of them gave were beyond belief. One said it was too late in the game. It was 100% a penalty and VAR could see all the angles but didn't bother to double check. Let me get this straight. - I punch an opponent on the field - His teammates make a big fuss - The ref didn't see my attack so he doesn't punish me at all, even though play is stopped momentarily to treat the player I punched - VAR and the rest of the world has seen what happened live and they see it again in replays - Ref decided it never happened because HE didn't see it so his VAR mates will have his back Then what is the fucking point of having that access to replays??

As a neutral in this particular match but happened to be watching at the time, my initial impression of the incident was there wasn't a lot in it. Yes contact, but minimal and not enough for an injury time Pen to LFC for me - there, I've said it. Marginal. No doubt many will choose to disagree - fair enough. But your point re Webb essentially implying VAR essentially serves zero purpose is really well made. What is the point of VAR if those officials can randomly choose whether to intervene and recommend a pitchside review or just remain schtum, deferring to the old fashioned random on field refereeing decision irrespective of exactitude? All Webb is confirming is the random refereeing roulette has been moved from on field to somewhere in the VAR random intervention decision tombola. Barmy.

It is probably why PGMOL was set up so the FA/EPL could have deniability. VAR should be brought in-house under the FA umbrella and the FA made accountable for the VAR team's performance, transparency and integrity. And don't forget, the TV companies weild massive influence. They don't want the league won by Easter, they want a tight finish. That's exactly what we have this season in the EPL and the Championship. I think we can safely say that this issue has gone beyond incompetence and now moved into the realm of corruption.

Doku clearly plays the ball and the contact with Mac Allister's shoulder is obviously minimal, since Mac Allister's shoulder does not move away from the contact, but moves in the opposite position. If anything, Mac Allister was seeking the contact, since he makes no attempt to either kick or head the ball.
