"Touching the ball" doesn't automatically make a tackle legal. It can just often (!) be used as an indicator who was at the ball first and thus had "the right" to go for it.
@MrMMAJER7 ай бұрын
I didn't even know this was up to question. That was a penalty as clear as water. In the replay you can see, even if Lamptey barely touches the ball, that Jesus is still in possession and willing to advance the ball, and the only thing that prevents him from doing that is Lamptey's leg.

VAR is a good concept which has been implemented disastrously. I am a huge advocate of implementing the automated systems from the Qatar world cup. It wasn't perfect but it was much better than what we have now.
@man44377 ай бұрын
People always say this, but I think disastrous is a pretty harsh judgement considering that it by-and-large has made decisions much better. Like, it feels like the exact kind of catastrophising Zealand mentioned. Football fans are just really overdramatic. Everything is the end of the world. It's so annoying for anyone who cares about things other than adult kickball.
@man44377 ай бұрын
I do think that some rules maybe need to be changed or adapted in accordance with VAR looking at the game more closely. A lot of the "worst" decisions people complain about are just correct implementations of the rules according to what the VAR sees. Like, the Newcastle goal against Arsenal. That's an understandably controversial goal and maybe they should've had a better angle of the touchline, but the law says you can't rule out a goal unless you're 100% confident it's illegal (which I think should be the aim). Same with handballs.
@ChunkyKong-477 ай бұрын
Personally I think that we should just have the ref go over to the screen and only be allowed 15 seconds to look at video. Basically see it once and make a decision, a lot of the problems come when the var officials try to call the game from the booth and end up just protecting poor decisions. Honestly I wouldn’t mind a challenge system where the coach can decide whether or not to review something depending on how important it is.

THANK YOU. I don't know where this whole touching the ball negates a foul thing came from because it's not a law and never has been. Getting the tiniest of touches of the ball doesn't overrule you wiping someone out. The rules don't say "touch the ball negates tackles". People are operating on 20 year old rules of the game. The refs referes to gaining possession, something Lamptey clearly doesn't. The rule only refers to taking out or potentially hurting the opponent by tackles, holding etc.

It was definitely a penalty. There is this leniency for fouls in the box if they "get the ball" - a few weeks ago Van der Ven for Spurs cleaned out Watkins in the box against Villa with a very dangerous tackle, which if it happened anywhere else on the pitch would've been a foul and not only that a red card, but because he "got the ball" there was no action taken.

On the other hand as someone who is really a left winger, i can see why you would want it given although i wouldnt want it as a winger to be given for me.

I am not convinced that was a foul, I think within the spirit of the rules it probably was but on a technical basis the contact with the player comes as a result of going for the ball. As a former Sunday league referee I'd put this as a 60/40 penalty and those, in general, get awarded in Bigger games. I do think this is the kind of Challenge that is more of an issue for the Defending manager because it was a strategically naïve way of going in for the Challenge.
@alpuzza7 ай бұрын
I don't think there is any controvery at all, the rules are pretty clear. If it's a tackle from one of our team's players, then touching the ball immediately invalidates any fault, whether it's a tackle or a punch to the face. If it's a tackle from the opposing side, then it's a clear fault and the defender should be booked or expelled.

Football should use the same VAR rules as hockey. You get an X amount of times you can call on VAR and after that you're done. I will die on this hill.
@untexan7 ай бұрын
Hockey is actually the worst VAR comp you can make because they have the same shortcoming. The big issue with the Premier League's use of VAR is the way they go fishing for reasons to disallow goals. Players offside and not really involved in the play, fouls in the build up (whatever that means), changing definitions of phases of play. It's the same way in the NHL. Every time a goal is scored and you see a shot of the other team's bench, the coach's eyes are glued to the monitors embedded in the floor as they look for any reason they could challenge the call.

I dont know how VAR can honestly get most these wrong. My personal opinion is that 1, the referee's arent good enough at all that are doing the var. 2. A former referee thats friends with most if not all current refs shouldnt be in charge. It hasn't worked out well for police forces for covering up "mistakes" and it wont here. 3. The fact they gotta slow it down, to frame by frame to see if theres any contact with player or ball should probably tell you there isnt enough. And stop showing photos to refs to "change there mind" 4. Offside with var is flawed to some degree, they cant get the extact frame a balls played, and i doubt they actually have the ability to draw the lines from the correct position. Coupled with frame not being correct + the line slightly being off the shoulder or foot on one player and perfect on the other (theyre human drawn not computer?) Then the accuracy isnt there at all for the really tight calls. Pgmol is really a problem, its a group of mates in a little club, run by there mate who defends some terrible decision and have nobody to answer to

I'd argue it's a penalty because Lampety puts his foot backwards in a position that trips Jesus. Intentional or not, it's not a clean win of the ball. Now Doku should have been penalised (I am biased, Liverpool fan). The real issue though stems from inconsistent interpretation from the referees. The PGMOL needs to improve the quality of refereeing but also revise the rule book. VAR isn't the problem. Humans are.
@tidyyy7 ай бұрын
lol, he's not "cleaned out", it's not a "voilent amount of contact", he doesnt get "absolutely obliterated"😹 he is not "endangering the dude's ankle", the ball was there to be won and the follow through caused a tiny tap he withdraws from and jesus cant walk on grass, nevermind water. i didnt see doku's (VAR is genuinely ruining the PL for me, but i'm a burnley fan so that wont be a concern for long), but he did get a touch on the ball so it's tough to say he didnt win the challenge. football is a contact sport, and he got the ball first (i.e. didnt go through the man first) and jesus flopped like 5 loaves and 2 fish. if he stuck on his feet and hit it i'd have had more sympathy for him. but apparently if you get tapped in the ankle it causes your back to spasm and your legs stop working so what do i know 🤷♂

What Lamptey did is not in any way a fair tackle. Lamptey's only intention was clearing out Jesus. The ball just happened to be in the way of his feet. This is a penalty. I can not understand how one could even argue that it wasn't What Doku did is also a penalty but at least a less obvious one. I can understand people trying to claim Doku's wasn't a pen but defending Lamptey here is ridiculous in my eyes. To see stuff this obvious possibly not getting a clear and immediate call is just laughable when I've seen cards given out for perfectly clean tackles that only happened to touch the opponent after the ball was cleared.
