A light grey should give you superior contrast.

No, a light grey will not give you a superior contrast. White provides the highest possible means of dynamic range due to the reflective nature and it's ability to raise the brightest areas in a significantly higher way than the extra stops in the black areas. It's why we don't project onto black. You are compressing the image. Also the type of grey will give it a colour cast which will muddy the colours. There are scientific papers online if you do a quick Google search. ​@@varerkars
