Variable fonts were introduced in 2016. If you haven’t used the new format, now would be a good time to learn all about it, since more and more variable fonts are available and browsers and graphic design apps support it.

This was very helpful. Thanks for the explanation. I used two variable fonts for the typesetting of my PhD thesis without knowing much about the background. After printing I have got some wired artifacts/gaps in some of the letters in the serif font I used. Are there any considerations regarding the usage of variable fonts in print products or is this something which is not recommended in general? Thanks

Hard to say from a distance. Might be a problem in the app/ printer driver that was used.

What happens if you access a variable font with an application that doesn't have the necessary capability (like Microsoft Word)? Can you still use the base font?

It can work but most you would get is the regular style.

I enjoy this topic as well as modern computer technology. I have wanted to know more about printer fonts for years, and we found it in the best place--KZbin. Whether I realize it or not, I work with printer fonts almost every day at home.👍

so basically if you stretch or squish the letterforms using variable font parameters, it's the new hotness. but if you stretch or squish the letterforms by other means it's a big typography no no?

Interpolating between instances the type designer has specifially designed and strechting fonts artificially produces very different results. In fact, this was all known and true long before there were digital fonts.
