Is this related to the design used on the Toyota Prius? Or is it more like that used on automatic gearboxes with discreet gears and band brakes? Most of my understanding is manual transmissions (I've never taken one apart but I have a good understanding of their function - not so with automatics). I see four possible moving pieces, which basically means three inputs to one output. Lock one and that's two inputs one output, sort of like a Prius to my understanding (engine and motor as inputs, output to wheels), or lock any two and you have one input one output, which I suppose could be used in auto transmissions.
@secrettree5 жыл бұрын
Yeah its like an automatic transmission where clutches lock the inputs at will. The prius transmission is very similar except it doesn't lock the inputs, it varies them using electrically. I think they use electric motors (as a generator) to vary the torque to the inputs. This way some of the energy can be harvested vs wasting it to heat like a clutch.

This is also nothing new (originates in the 40's). Ravigneaux gearboxes are common these days. The 'Simpson' gearbox was/is an alternative which has multiple normal planetary gearsets while the Ravigneaux allows for a smaller amount of needed gears & gear carriers. This allows a lighter and cheaper construction.
@suzukispider6 жыл бұрын
variable how? it's a simple planetary set with an extra gear. and you can't turn the big one backwards if that represents the engine, engines only go in one direction. you showed orange held still twice, and the impossible backwards engine. other than the extra gear, how is this different from a standard planetary set?
@axiom16506 жыл бұрын
Variable: capable of being varied or changed; alterable; it is not a fixed ratio gearbox. The engine can be connected to any shaft (or the ring gear) via clutches, in reverse it still turns in the same direction. Something you could have figured by reading the description and a simple google search, which is where you'll find the answer to your last question.

In all the machines I know (a car included) the gearbox drives an output shaft. In this design, there are two outputs turning at different speeds (apart from where the whole thing is apparently locked and turning as a unit). Before being convinced of its viability, I would have to see how it gets connected to the output shaft. It seems to me that further gearing would be required.
@axiom16506 жыл бұрын
You'd do well to re-evaluate your knowledge, this very design is in a good portion of cars on the road and has been used for almost 100 years. People seem to assume I'm trying to show something new here.
@DownhillAllTheWay6 жыл бұрын
VRBTech - It's a shame you didn't back that up with more information - like which cars use it, and how the two output speeds get translated into a single speed to drive the wheels. I'm not saying you're wrong, nor am I arguing with you, but as I said before, "I would have to see how it gets connected to the output shaft. It seems to me that further gearing would be required". As two components of what you have shown are rotating at different speeds, there clearly has to be something more between this gearbox and the differential, in which case, the system you have shown is not the entire geartrain - but only a component of it.

It's a spur gear planetary differential. You CAN build a variable transmission from any open differential... but it's not a transmission 'til you incorporate some means on controlling the bias. This is basically a single axis version of what in your average automotive axle. The core of the Toyota Prius transmission is based on the same principle.
@Person012344 жыл бұрын
@@axiom1650 I don't think "variable" implies "continuously variable". In fact I think the exact opposite - If something is "continuously" variable this must be to differentiate it from other types of variable that exist. CVTs are continuously variable because their ratio varies continuously (without steps). It inherently implies that being simply "variable" (in gear ratio) is something that can be done non-continuously. Otherwise CVTs would just be called VTs.
