Finally had a chance to listen to this properly and I really liked it ! It has a nice range of contrasting movements. I've always found Nicea a slightly turgid melody. (My organ teacher may have been thinking of tunes like this when he told me that accompanying some congregations was like taking an elephant for a walk with a piece of string) However, your set of variations really transforms it. I particularly like the canon in the second movement. For me it highlights the French feel to this work.
@PaulFey3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Michael!! I think the second movement is my favourite as well - the melody works so well with the canon! :D

A wonderful set of variations on ‘Nicaea’, Paul. And just in time for Trinity Sunday! They are extremely well crafted and I really love some of the gorgeous and lush harmonies you have created. You are so evidently now developing your own unique compositional style and shaping the music your way, but always keeping it approachable by using musical language most listeners can fully understand (even if some of the variations here call upon the organist to be somewhat technically accomplished!). Bravo!

Hehe - I live near a railroad roundhouse so trains all of the time. When you started Variation 3 and had part of the score on the screen. Exactly when you hit the first chord - there were 'other notes' playing which actually worked with the chords - a different pitch, but it worked and I was looking at the score and said to myself...what is he playing because I do not see the notes on the score. Then I realized it was a train breaking through my headphones! Even up until the end of the movement it matched. This was amazing because trains have a 'multi-pitched' or varied harmonic overtones when tooting!
