After meeting Andres Segovia at the 1932 International Society of Contemporary Music festival, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco began a lifelong contribution to the classical guitar repertoire. After Segovia sent him copies of Fernando Sor’s Variations on a Theme by Mozart and Manuel Ponce’s Variation on Las Folias, Castelnuovo-Tedesco decided to write a set of variations.
Completed in the same year, Variazioni (attraverso i secoli…) (Variations Across the Centuries) was Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s first published piece for guitar. The variations begin with the Chaconne, a Baroque form likely inspired by Segovia’s transcription of the Bach Chaconne in D minor. The piece then takes the theme and develops it through stylistic periods such as the Prelude, which alludes to another Baroque form, the two Waltzes, which are reminiscent of Romantic piano music, and the Fox-trot, which was a contemporary dance at the time the piece was composed.
