I liked all of your fixes except for the second one. For some reason that one just didn't work for me.

I think I'd agree. Part of it is just that the paintover is quick and not as detailed as the foreground, but also the low repetitive mountains added to the desolation and emptiness mirrored in the characters. It seems like a painting better suited to restraint than dynamism.
