Tyler Perry's long standing commitment to telling stories his way has not only made him a household name among black families, but has taken him to billion dollar heights in Hollywood. Within the last year, he retired his popular character Madea with one final play tour and film, earned a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and most recently opened a second Tyler Perry Studios location in Atlanta, Georgia. For all of these reasons and more, Variety has named him the Showman of the Year.
Perry opens up about believing in himself as he navigated Hollywood as a Black man, how Madea led to him becoming a billionaire and what song from “The Greatest Showman” he can’t get out of his head.
