You can fish for most freshwater fish with like a 9ft 6wt with floating line. May not be as fun as a 3wt for small trout or as effective as a 8wt for steelhead, but it can do a lot. Use the butt section of the rod to put hard pressure on a large fish when using accompanyingly heavy tippet.
