Varmilo VA87M: This was too much work

I just got finished soldering mine back up, lubed the switches and stabs, and will add some foam to cover the hollow spots in the case and tape mode it and see how it goes! This video inspired me to work on my old varmilo as a passion project, I have the one with the CMYK keycaps it's so beautiful

Very nice! Foams aren't all that necessary since its plastic, hollowness sounded okay but tape is probably the best mod for it. I liked this board for it's simplicity and when modded it does sound pretty good. I did eventually rebuild it with some unique frankenswitches but now its primarily a display piece. If it had used usb-c it might still be in rotation : )

Noticed that the stabs are plate-mounted, would it be possible to switch to a PCB mounted stab?

I think that given the pcb and plate design, you wouldn't be able to use screw-in or clip-in stabs unfortunately.. my recommendation would be to get cherry plate mounted stabs as a very respectable alternative! Hope that helps and good luck with the build!

I can't imagine myself soldering anything Hotswap life. Could you do a comparison/review on budget keycaps? Like Akko or Amazon brand/GMK clones what not?

It looks hard to someone who has never touched any soldering kit but in reality it isn't. Honestly, all the other stuff in this video was way harder than the solder work. As for keycaps, I was actually planning to do one after a switches breakdown video! GMK clones? That is a touchy subject for many but I would love to address it; all the issues, the good, the bad, cost comparison, the qc complaints, everything. Its coming in the very near future! : )
