I did this expoy coating on my teak patience is essential and sanding . It is tricky to do this right but the good thing is you can sand it down and start over . I will say the overall time involved, and the longevity is well worth the process I will never turn back to just laying up multiple coats of varnish.. I love watching this guy getting down on near perfection..

Hi and thanks for the inspirational video. I am prepping to refinish a 1940s mahogany runabout in a few months and would be interested if you had a video or course covering that process.

Definitely interested in that course. As a complete boat building, woodworking, and finishing novice I can only dream of being able to deliver such quality. Perhaps such a course would help me get there.

Thats great to hear, I like to think that the combination of my courses and plans will make the process more achievable for people such as yourself. The varnishing course is coming first but if it's successful I have plans to do a complete boat building one further down the line.

Looks great! I had a horrible experience with one part varnish over fresh epoxy. It appears that 2 part does not require the 14 day cure. Good to know
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There are a number of reasons that could have happened. Part of what I'd like to build within the course material is case studies on various different issues such as this that students have come across, followed up with solutions to the problems. In time I hope to build a definitive troubleshooting guide to cover these problems and help people overcome them.

How has this type held up in high sun areas, Such as Florida, What is the timing for redoing the Varnish and at what point do you have to sand through the epoxy if ever?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure actually, I have no experience of the sun in Florida, never been there 🙁. I've heard it's a killer though so I would imagine that you would want a substantial amount of UV protection over the top of the epoxy. I would probably suggest building more layers of single part traditional gloss as this gives the best protection against UV. It would also be advisable to do a yearly top up of at least one additional coat I would think.

Hi friend, You do the sanding and painting of the boat in the same room. How do you control the dust in suspension? Many thanks in advance
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 11 ай бұрын
Yes I usually do. Most of the time I have a big cleanup and then sheet out the area for the final coat to reduce dust.

Yes, the stain is a Morrells spirit based stain, a custom blend of one of their Mahogany stains and some Red. Epoxy is West System 105/207, the first stages of varnish are Epifanes PP and I have now finished off with Epifanes PU speedcoat.

I used to use varnish but i have never liked it, what i use now is automotive 2 part clear coat, sand everything down as you would here and spray 3 coats on and the grain will stand up, let dry over night, then sand with 400 and 3 more coats, sand again and finally about 5 cotes over that, give it a week to cure and spray on a very light guide coat and sand that guide coat off with 1500 watersand, final sand with 2500 and then buff it, it gives a finish like glass when done right.

Yes 2 part systems certainly have their benefits, speed being a huge one of those! They don't have the flexibility to accommodate some wood structures though so can't always be used. In this instance though 2 part saved me a ton of time, 3 coats a day instead of 3 days! If you can spray as well... 👌

@@DanLeeBoatbuilding If you find it too brittle sometimes i think you can use it with the soft face additive that they use when painting the plastic bumpers.

I had that brite idea 2! 5 years later & it’s peeling just like varnish! Gotta redo it all! Gonna just use 6 coats of Cetol instead! Did All the wood on a 50 footer a couple years ago & still looks like new! Supposed 2 scuff it lightly with a scotchbrite pad & apply a couple coats yearly, but we’ve dun nothing & it still looks great!

Not really, I've just never really used it, epoxy fills the grain soo quickly anyway.
