General European Strike in support of Greece

If the EU were truly democratic, or if it were still an association of democratic states, it would listen to Greek voters - the voters who have already crushed the parties of government that presided over the crisis. The tragedy is that they seem to have no impact on the rest of the EU, which now holds the fate of the Greek people in its hands. It is not just the Greek economy that faces a major challenge, Greek democracy itself is on trial. Worse still, Greek democracy is overridden or ignored by the EU authorities? What part of the Greek condemnation of austerity policies did the EU not understand?

Anna Tsoukala I appears that the stern ECB wants to direct a modern Greek Tragedy casting the economically suffering people as the Suppliants composing a Greek Chorus to their drama.

Anna Tsoukala Deciding whether greece would repay its debt or not is not a question of democracy.

Jonkin59 You mean to say that the everyday person in Greece should pay for a debt they never received in order to bailout French German and Greek banks? Is that democracy or haven't you been doing your homework. Just commenting for the sake of being nasty doesn't give me an intelligent answer.

Anna Tsoukala No, I mean to say that there are certain realities that you can´t vote on. The greek debt vis a vis other states is a fact and nothing that Greece can decide unilaterally not to pay while remaining in the Euro. Europe as a whole could vote and decide to cancel debts, but I doubt that there is a majority for this. Although I personally would support it under certain circumstances. That is why I think the vote can not change things "abroad", Greece could only say "we don´t want to bear these measures anymore, they are useless and we want to leave the Euro Zone". And this is exactly what should have happened after this vote. After all I think this would be best for Greek economy and I am also quite sure that Varoufakis had this in mind, instead of this prolongation of failure that our politicians have agreed on.
