Nowadays the pre-rendered graphics look way worse than proper pixel art, but I am sure that in a CRT this game was really neat when it was released.

Honestly I never thought the pre-rendered graphics looked right, except games like Donkey Kong Country and maybe a few others. It took me a long time to figure out why. It’s the lighting. There’ll be weird glares and specular highlights in all the wrong places compared to other parts of the background or various sprites. It throws off the whole effect. Sometimes the resolution and color depth wasn’t high enough, either. Images would look rough or washed out. Overall I prefer the hand-drawn look.

The "long sheets" were used to determine bonus: however many of their holders fell is what you claimed. The "red chips" did what for you?

The red chips fill up the power meter at the top left, allowing for the wide blade Vasara attack.
