It seems likely that this was a 'fume event' where bleed air from the engines which is used for air conditioning and pressurisation was contaminated with engine lubricating oil as a result of failed engine bearing seals. It has the characteristic 'dirty socks' smell and contains an organophosphate additive which can seriously affect people, making them nauseous or weak and may have long term health issues. Imagine that you are 10 years old and flying from Frankfurt to Nuremberg and everyone on the plane gets sick, passengers, stewardesses, pilots. It happened to me in 1962 on Lufthansa as we flew from London. They gave everyone on the plane a choice of apple, tomato or orange juice. A few minutes later, the plane hit an air pocket or clear air turbulence and we dropped 7,000 feet in a minute and then another 3,000 ft, The problem was that the whole plane was vomiting. They ran out of vomit bags, People were vomiting into the seat backs, the floor, even their coffee cups and hats and the flight crew was vomiting too. At 10 you don't have much of a life, but I swore never to fly Lufthansa again. They recovered and we landed safely and I asked the Captain how far we dropped and he told me. They had to scrub out the plane and it was awful inside.

We have the same issue with a Hawker that I fly. Usually have the "stinky sock" smell on descent and it is fairly common. This is too funny.

I flew on an Embraer 170 recently. Engines started after I was in my seat. At the time of engine startup, there was light gray smoke very clearly visible around the left engine (the one I could see from my seat). Based on what I heard and the smoke I saw, it took about five or ten seconds before I smelled burnt oil from my seat behind the engine. It really smelled to me a lot like what I expect to smell if I go through a cloud of exhaust from a car or truck that burns oil. By one minute later the smell issue seemed to be gone, so I figured there wasn't anything anybody was gonna do about it.
@cdawg3864 жыл бұрын
Yeah if it was a cold start, the engines can produce some light smoke. When the airplane was pushed back, the apu, which is located in the tail, was running and providing air to the cabin. The apu took in some fumes from the engines and that's what you smelled. Nothing to worry about. (Edit for spelling error)

I remember when I was younger I was flying from New York to Georgia. I was going through puberty, and didn't know about deodorant yet lol We were in the air and I wanted to see if my armpits were sweaty and when I lifted up my arms, if an odor can have a size, it was huge. Theres no way no one else besides my brother and mom didn't smell it.

Maybe not a crazy scary emergency but one step removed from it. If the cockpit oxygen system failed for any reason, they’d have been in very dire straits.

It is smelly as hell up here in the aircraft, so to we feel that with the normal smell in Boston it would be the best place to land, so we can acclimate to the smell before taking off again :D

Most likely the contiliver input device gets stuck in the out planitter position. Happens all the time. This causes the osmocotion permitter to lock and usually results in a dirty sock smell.

I ain't even joking but it sounds like there was an unclean passenger on the flight. The same exact thing happened on my flight last year except not to the extent of returning to the airport we departed from. There was a guy sitting about midway in the plane that stunk to high heaven and everyone complained about the smell. Planes are sealed tighter than a can of tuna, even if you crack the smallest of farts in the first row, the back row is gonna smell it eventually.
@VoltageLP4 жыл бұрын
Nope, I’m pretty sure that was a leaky gasket inside one of the engines that was contaminating the bleed air with oil vapors

Yes but there is also an outflow valve to relieve cabin pressure so eventually all the air is cycled. In the planes I used to fly this outflow valve was located in the cockpit so you could literally fart all you wanted and it would never smell.

It must have been some sort of chemical fumes. Nausea, coughing, dizziness that’s sounds to me something is leaking from somewhere.
@compmanio364 жыл бұрын
There has been a few cases of certain hydraulic oils and such leaking and entering the cabin air system via the engine intakes, leading to sickness....in fact there is a growing call to investigate some of the chemicals and such that the flight crew and attendants are exposed to with flying so much, that has potentially led to elevated levels of sickness among flight attendants, and even cancers. No proof of anything yet, but it's somewhat concerning if you fly regularly.
