My understanding is that TCAS uses ATC radar information gathered from aircraft transponders to show targets or conflicts or whatever, but I'm not sure if that's correct. I think we can say that if it shows up on TCAS, it has a transponder, but I'm not 100% sure. I learned how TCAS worked >30 years ago and I've never used it. I've forgotten a lot.

It is one thing when you have half of NJ recording videos of planes on approach calling them drones, but it's another when professional pilots would risk their reputation/career to make such reports, and it's multiple pilots on multiple occasions at different areas. Satellites move in a linear direction and are easy to differentiate, so i'm not buying that argument. These guys have thousands of hours in the air, they aren't confusing satellites/aircraft/miltary ops with rapidly moving objects.

I remember this one time I was cruising at 521 mph, feeling all fast and furious, when I spotted something zooming by like a UFO on a mission. For a split second, I was convinced it was an alien ship breaking every speed record in the universe. But as it whizzed past, I realized it was just another massive Boeing headed the opposite direction. The combined speed made it look like it was traveling at warp speed. Watches go on for about 1.5-2 hours while return from DC around a week ago, we were just over Colorado when we noticed it. Continued until we were just entering Nevada and appeared to be very far away off the coast even which would lineup with these reports. Lights would appear out of nowhere, become brighter than any star in the sky, move in any direction, up down, sideways then slowly fade back out before re appearing, anywhere from 1-5 in the sky at any given time. Wasn’t able to get video with how dark it was but got some pictures of them appearing and disappearing and being in different positions relative to the stars. Interesting thing was no one else in frequency bringing them up. We were at FL400 so maybe had a better view than airline traffic that was westbound at night but definitely an interesting feeling, hopefully something comes out about them

Yeah I saw this flying over the pacific at night this week. Had three targets, kind of moving in an orbit, they would fade in to planet level brightness, such as Venus in the night sky, then fade out of sight with the naked eye. We could still see the objects aided with night vision. I have seen it one other time flying into Hawaii.

Yesterday evening between 2100Z-2200Z in Brest FIR (France) multiple reports of two/three fast-moving lights as well. They were visibile in the west with an orange/red color, also moving in circular motion with sometimes unpredictive path, slightly higher than the other commercial traffic around. It could be described as looking to two fighter jets dogfighting with continious afterburner.

Typical starlink flares. The circular movement is because of crossing satellites coming into and fading out of view at certain times and sunlight that is reflected on them. The reflection is only short as the sun is below the horizon and only gets reflected a short time. And no, this does not look like a typical starlink train. The conditions have to be just right to get the flares at the horizon.

For those of you who counter the explanation of Starlink flares with "satellites don't change direction etc.," you're confusing Starlink satellites with their respective flares. Starlink flares create the *optical illusion* of changing direction and circling each other due to several factors involving the movement of the satellites, their alignment with the observer, and the characteristics of the reflection. However, the main consideration is that Starlink satellites travel in "constellations," and sometimes several constellations of Starlink satellites are visible in the sky simultaneously. The proximity of these satellites can make them *appear* to be circling or moving in relation to each other, especially when their positions are close enough that their individual paths cross in the sky. Also, if their reflective surfaces are aligned at slightly different angles, their flares can create a "chasing" or "circling" effect as they move in different directions. Furthermore, atmospheric conditions affect how the flares are perceived. The way light refracts through the atmosphere can make the satellite movement appear more fluid and changeable than it actually is. And I didn't even get into perceptual effects caused by the way our brain interprets moving objects in the sky, another factor at play. There's nothing mysterious about this and similar sightings.

I’m not saying your argument is invalid, but to assume all these accountable UAP sightings are due to optical illusions would be a bit silly. This doesn’t explain seeing UAP activity at low altitudes and/or in the ocean (Nimitz incident). My argument is, our technology has become so advanced just in the last 150 years, we’ve existed for 200k years. The universe is 13.7 billion years old though, to assume the possibility of this being extraterrestrial is not far fetched at all. About 10? years ago I was a commercial passenger from Phoenix to Sacramento and I saw an odd cigar shaped object out my window. It was hard to locate, but would come and go. The fact that they were painting them as TCAS targets but they wherent showing up on the controllers SSR is very… interesting. So whatever they were was broadcasting a Mode C/ADS-B signal to the Xponders of the surrounding aircraft for an interrogation response, but not painting a target on the scopes at KZSE. Knowing this, and the fact that they appear to have FAA compliant NAV & strobe lights… it seems like they want to be SEEN & avoided, but not TRACKED. Something is up, that’s for damn sure.

Likely just atmospheric phenomena that far North. Particularly given some of the descriptions. A dropping corkscrew pattern, for example, could just be charged particles in the Earth's magnetic field. The others are probably electrical in some manner, particularly with noted fast movements and altitude shifts in seconds of 30,000ft. Not unexpected either given atmospheric conditions during those dates. I expect we will be seeing a lot more of these sorts of thing as climate change continues to disrupt polar flows. It would be fun to get a proper observation plane up there during events like this that can actually record serious data. Unlikely to be starlink but it depends on the time. You can generally see starlink satellites at dawn and dusk when the sun-angle is able to glance off of surfaces, or if you know exactly where to look. But what you will see is a moving bright point going more or less in a straight line, which most of these sightings are not. -Matt

Yeah, generally I agree. But in this case we have a plane reporting TCAS with very specific motion and distance. Seems like there was something there. It would be interesting to know what it was.

Yes and no…I agree that this is how hysteria typically goes down but some of these pilots seem to be “joining the chat” at different times, therefor not being influenced by one another. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not on some “ALIENS!” bandwagon…just saying that what they’re independently reporting sounds like it’s probably “real”. Whether it’s military, atmospheric phenomena, aliens, Jesus…none of us know. But it seems as though it was at least *there* due to multiple, independent reports and even TCAS, which makes even less sense…

@@smark1180 Yup. Any pilot is terrified of making the initial report to ATC about any UAP, that’s how you get a first class medical pulled instantly. That’s why other pilots started joining in, multiple witnesses covers your ass. Usually this stuff is talked about on a private frequency between pilots, it’s way more common than you think. The last thing you want to do is start talking about it on a recorded line with ATC.

I'm no expert... far from it. But Petter on the @MentourNow channel says that airport radar is not really geared toward actual detection of aircraft (or airborne objects). Rather it is generally more point-to-point between individual aircraft able to transmit "official" data to the airport with limited ability for the airport to transmit "official" data to individual aircraft. I'm sure the ATCs here can elaborate or even refute.

There is primary and secondary radar. ATC uses a combination of both. Primary (traditional) for distance and heading, secondary (ADS-B) for altitude and other data encoding

Man-made objects in Earth orbit CAN flare & dim in brightness due to their configuration, or if they are tumbling {inoperative}. I remember watching a discarded _Atlas-Centaur rocket body_ pass overhead and it was varying in brightness. The _Iridium_ satellites were well known for 'flaring' due to the way sunlight reflected off their antennas. I think I saw at least one of those once several years ago. All that said, the majority of man-made satellites have to follow ballistic trajectories that obey the laws of orbital mechanics. It ain't the 24th century yet.

First, forget about everything else you know about rockets and satellites, Iridium flares. etc. Starlink flares create the *optical illusion* of changing direction and circling each other due to several factors involving the movement of the satellites, their alignment with the observer, and the characteristics of the reflection. However, the main consideration is that Starlink satellites travel in large constellations, and sometimes several satellites are visible in the sky simultaneously. The proximity of these satellites can make them *appear* to be circling or moving in relation to each other, especially when their positions are close enough that their individual paths cross in the sky. If their reflective surfaces are aligned at slightly different angles, their flares can create a "chasing" or "circling" effect as they move in different directions.
