Hello everyone! Hope you like this video - just a few points - I was sick when I started recording this video, my voice was strained at about 4:30 - apologies for that. Also - got a LOT of people mentioning I didn't say something in Portuguese correctly - hoping to improve my Portuguese as this series progresses have patience as I'm not a native. If I said something wrong please write the phonetic way of saying something correctly - OR - consider leaving a super thanks so I can hire a Portuguese tutor 😊.

Regarding Portuguese words I'll leave any obvious mistake here. Starting with the Tagus river, in Portuguese, the J is always pronounced as a soft G, so Tejo is pronounced as Te-Ju. Think Texas-Jupiter.

You also have the common problem with the nasal diphthong ão used in padrão and João. No easy solution there as few languages use that sound. Aun would be an a decent aproximation as would mimicking a short bark by a large size dog. So, pa-draun with u being nearly silent.

King John II of Portugal was a formidable man. His vision and sagacity changed the world as we know it today but this is seldom gleaned or mentioned. He was also ruthless, bold, ambitious and supremely intelligent (hence, his title of "The Perfect Prince", as John II truly embodied Machiavelli's portrait of what a powerful ruler should be). Admired by Isabella of Castille (maybe because he outmaneuvered both the rival Iberian powers and the all-powerful Vatican and the infamous, cunning Borgia Pope), John still is an underrated colossus that died too young.

There are maps in the British Museum, in Paris and in the Library of the US Congress that shows lands in old Portuguese, one of them having the depiction of a land called "Isolla de Braçil", island of Brazil, dated in 1364. Most of the maps, journals and diaries made by us during the Age of Discoveries were destroyed in the Earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 (as they were secret documents still, they were stored near the Praça do Comércio). A Portuguese historian wrote a book about voyages that were unknown and give evidences (slim sadly, as most of them were, as i said, destroyed in the earthquake) of their existence. Also, that son of John II, Afonso, was supposed to marry the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs. It was one of the many diplomatic attempts for Portugal to gain all of Iberia through marriage (I call this an Austrian-gamer move). Also, Battle of Diu (1509) when? 😢 *Mamluks: You killing all of us bcz we killed your son?* *Viceroy Francisco de Almeida: MY ONLY SON!!!*

Thank you for another fantastic video! Don't worry about the pronounciation, we take it with a grain of salt. The locals did kill a few of Vasco's sailors during the trip, and many were killed by disease and scurvy in the trip. If you need all your men to sail back home, you will do whatever is needed to keep them alive. Vasco da Gama reached a point where he decided to not take any more risks and engaged in harsh punitive bombings of port cities. This was also spiced by the fact those were muslims, which were really a target to all Iberians, to whom "reconquista" was a pretty hot topic still. The locals rulers encouraged the civilians to throw sticks and stones to the Portuguese sailors of Vasco da Gama expedition, in a couple cities of the coast of nowadays Mozambique/Tanzania/Quenia. The guys that were on land had to flee in order to avoid certain death by city guards and the mob. Vasco gave orders to clear every roof/terrace of people from where stones were flying. It was a carnage and the seeds of fear were planted. Later, hostile cities would be again punished "just because". The acts commited later on, against Indians, by other Portuguese fleets, were not totally unprovoked and gratuitous. The first "feitorias" were constantly raided, burnt to the ground, and all men were killed to the last. Revenge was pretty much inspired by the old testament... with exacerbated responses (70x7). Again, remember that the Portuguese were not many, and so, every life was important. The administrator of the feitorias were usually some sort of noble. If killed, the king, and later, the vice-roy, had to act and deliver justice or face mutiny of the soldiers. This was common practice in those days, between contenders. Mercy was seldom. We need to look at those times with XVIth century eyes and context, not XXI century's.

I can see that you appreciate Roger Crowley’s writings. You surely have read ‘Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire’ by now. Can I humbly suggest a new Flash Point in History? As you know, medieval Europe was a comparatively unimportant backwater compared to India, China and the Ottoman Empire. These places were far richer, more prosperous, more populous and more potent than any single European state. In fact, after the Earth-shattering fall of Constantinople, nobody with a sane mind would bet that tiny, weak Europe would ever become the predominant center of world power in the following centuries (all Europe had was ‘guns, germs, and steel’, to paraphrase Jared Diamond). Well, that would change thanks to the arrival of Columbus to the New World (on the one hand) and thanks to a crucial naval battle (on the other hand). But Columbus feat was not at all though compared to the Portuguese feats - as mentioned by Crowley, the Portuguese arrived at an ocean that was far from empty. In reality, they arrived at an ocean dominated by well-established powers. What definitely changed the ‘locus’ of power from Asia and the Muslim world to Europe took place in the Arabian Sea, off the waters of the Indian city of Diu, on 3 February 1509. The context surrounding the Battle of Diu is quite colorful and interesting, as it was (in essence) a story of one man (the formidable Francisco de Almeida) bent on avenging the horrible death of his cherished son. The battle pitted the Portuguese Empire against a coalition of fierce rivals that included the Sultanate of Egypt, Gujarat, Calicut, the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice. The ensuing Portuguese victory all but eradicated the influence of these powers in the Indian Ocean. This, in turn, paved the way to the European dominance of Asia and, in fact, of the whole world. The Portuguese were soon followed by the Dutch and the British…and the rest is history. Diu was truly a Flash Point in History. This battle of annihilation (like Lepanto and Trafalgar) marked the moment when Europe began its rise to world domination (if you are interested, there is a documentary about it on Amazon Prime, as well as several books on the matter). The book ‘Conquerors’ tells it all in vivid detail, and also introduces the colossal figure of Afonso de Albuquerque, the Lion of the Seas (which would be responsible conquering Malacca, another Flash Point, with his mythical dark ship, the Flor de la Mar). I do not find any worthwhile video in English exploring these battles (Diu and Malacca) and formidable men that changed human history. It would be amazing to see you produce such videos. All the best

The arrival of Columbus in America was not important for the development of Europe, unless we value the previous Portuguese expeditions that made a nation be in the presence of North America (yes, Portugal arrived before) and in 1488 even South Africa. Christopher Columbus is a character invented in three ways: because he is a Genoese, who would make the Italian Renaissance legendary, because of Spanish propaganda, because he has not done any honorable feat and built an empire based on tricks and tricks. deceptions, with which to justify the story that Portugal only entered the game later. And finally, the United States and its attempt to separate from the English, made its founding father Columbus, who has nothing to do with them. Like Portugal It is an English ally, we discredit it and we do not tell that it was the first global empire. And by the way, they copied the propaganda in the space race against the Russians.

Great video! A man worth mentioning was Nicolau Coelho, the helm's man of the ship Berrio, considered the greatest of his time. Like many seamen of his time, he would die at sea, on the return trip of his third India trip. Many years ago, as a young man of letters with a thirst for adventure and a love of History, I went to maritime school and joined the Merchant Navy. I didn't fight the Ottoman Turks, natürlich, but I've been to Indonesia ("the spice islands") and Australia. Endured the horse latitudes, crossed the International Date Line, got a tattoo, had my fair share of adventure including the loss of a ship, was close to sinking in the Atlantic. Once, leaving Lisbon Harbour, the Tower of Belém fading in the distance, the feeling of leaving the Tejo Estuary and into the great unknown... I lived the dream. Us Portuguese, we all have an India in our hearts. A sense of purpose that's greater than us. A wild goal in mind. And when they tell us it's impossible, that only makes us even more determined.

The Jews (and Muslims!) were forced to convert or leave about the same years in both the Iberian Crown and in Portugal, they had to flee to North Africa, the Ottoman Empire or other parts of Europe (in the case of Jews, not Muslims), such as Navarre, the Netherlands or Britain. Specifically Jews were forced to convert or leave in Portugal in the year 1496, barely four years after the same happened in Castile.

@@FlashPointHx he probably hid his identity for other reasons and before that. The spanish kings seems to know who he really was, he was treated as someone from high nobility. A weaver wouldn't talk to a king and make contracts with a king. And before, in Portugal, a weaver wouldn't marry with a noble woman. Here the authors of the video made a mistake: the ship on which Columbus returned from his first voyage west was called the Niña. "The Santa Maria was wrecked off the coast of Española (Haiti), and the materials from the ship were used to build the fort of La Navidad, inhabited by some of its crew. The fort would later be destroyed by the natives and the garrison massacred.
