Podkolzin provided a logical and rational assessment of why Kuzmenko was traded to Calgary. In his argument, Podkolzin also understands what he needs to do to be successful as a Canuck player.

To be fair, Podkolzin hasn't been given much of an opportunity, even when the roster was thinner, despite the fact that he plays a style that is conducive to being placed anywhere in the forward group. But last year, the focus was so much on gaining back respectability for the first time in a decade, so they couldn't really risk having him be a regular. Hopefully that changes next season because he certainly plays a Tocchet style of hockey, even if he's not scoring. And he certainly hasn't hurt the big club to any great degree.

Kuzmenko is a pure offensive player. That is why Canucks first signed him. Tocchet wanted him to play more defense and check more. That is not his style. He is not a young player that you might be able to change and it's hard to change his habits now. He got 39 goals and 74 points in his first year. Why would you want to change his game? He was great with Pettersson and now Canucks needed to find an offensive forward to play with Pettersson after they traded Kuzmenko away. Makes sense to me. LMAO.

You cant have both wingers in Mikheyev and Kuzmenko allergic to forechecking and physical play. both are gone? definitley not the problem right?

@@SleeCee Yup, 39 goals and 74 points and Pettersson's best season was the problem. HAHAHA.

@@sucraf1 Almost as if Petey fed Kuzemenko for 90% of those points. Having a full line that can carry their weight would be nice if one of them is having a slump.

I wouldnt be surprised if he was traded in a packed for a top 4 dman. I want him to be successful and do well in Van but all these signs point to, last chance or your traded

The main thing for Podkolzin with the coaching upheaval is the team was almost always in non-room-for-error mode. Not a good situation for young players who need a bit of rope. You finally saw him get a chance again when the division was all but locked up, but now he has to get up to speed with the change in play coming from the AHL. Hopefully he just goes hard in pre-season because we all know Tocchet wants to give him a chance. Just have to see that drive.

He only played 19 games in the league the problem could have been him so he shouldn’t really be talking about someone that actually played in the league full time

Comes down to does a player want to be part of a winning team or get an opportunity and score points on a losing team? A player can say they didn't get an opportunity all they want but they either get the job done or they don't. I think Calgary went 13 - 16 in those 29 games (with Kuz a -8 plus/minus - not a great start but still a useful metric). Canucks didn't make the playoffs the year he scored a bunch of points and they made the playoffs when he didn't - tells you something. Hopefully Podz can relax and come to camp ready to play smart, aggressive, and fast.
