I think this is so far and away the BEST Nutcracker performance ever. There are so many things but the dancer depicting Uncle Drosselmeyer is brilliant--mysterious and charming; the music is absolute perfection. Bravo bravo bravo!!!

I have this DVD and watched it every single night as I went to bed at Christmas time growing up. Tonight I pulled out the DVD and put it in my computer and it keeps freezing. I am so thankful I was able to find this upload on KZbin! I know there are tons of fantastic productions, but this one will always be my favorite.

The tempo is soooo fast! OMG! The conductor is bringing such a brilliant orchestra in its limits, but the result is wonderful. This is a purely forte Russian sound, crystal clear and full of energy.

I just watched a version of this ballet company, I think 1985, and due to my lack of dance knowledge I pulled up the Ballet dictionary simultaneously. I am 71 and this is the first time I've ever seen it completely, but this time I even had a vague idea what some positions were actually called. Only some to be sure, but I enjoyed it all the more. I've known the music practically my entire life but now it would appear I've come full circle.

This entire production of 1989 is extra. The entire execution is death defying extremely athletic and sharp. In this the Nutcracker makes his appearance not as a doll in the first act but as an actual dancer being pulled around. Incredible. The conducting is nimble passionate and dynamic and terrifying . The manic aspects of fairyland are brought out.

This is the 1978 performance at the Bolshoi. The 1989 performance is in stereo. This one is mono but is excellent just the same

This isn't the old version, which had the uncle shaking his finger at the brother and his friends after they'd damaged the nutcracker. I miss the older version, although this version is almost as good, and the Bolshoi still does it better than anybody else. It doesn't depend on costumes or fancy, elaborate sets, but just pure ballet, the best in the world.

The best choreography ever and brilliant dancers! But I am a bit disappointed not to see the Sugarplum Fairy and her court. This has been the libretto for the Nutcracker at Sofia Opera and Ballet House for many years now and I thought that Bolshoi would keep the original but no. Still a brilliant performance.

I've seen this performance on the 12th of May 1976 in the Bolshoi ( 200 year celebration). I stil have the tickets of the loge and i still remeber that cute ballerina Maximova sitting on that chair under the picture. A great performance those days. Many thanks for uploading.

The tempos throughout tend to run on the fast side = many of the incredibly intricate nuances in the music are sacrificed for shier brilliance and an extra puff of energy. A poor trade I think.

I watched several different versions of the Bolshoi Nutcracker. .this by far is not the best, very rushed, dancers not on right beat, step so to speak..u saw where the male Russian dancer was late for his entrance. .However, i have a profond respect for these beautiful dedicated hard working ballet dancers. Bravo.
