Simultaneously, the monothematicism is very strong in his works, as the common tendency of the time. To be traditional, to be up to date, and to be original at the same time - not so many creators are able to be like that.

Kalinnikov's soul was strikingly healthy - that was a very rare phenomenon at that time (the 2nd half of the 19ht c.), not only in Russia. His folk themes and their development are very natural - much more than Tchaikovsky's ones. Kalinnikov didn't separate himself from his nation.

My first reaction is...my god his music is nice but borderline cheesy. But the more I listen to it the less tacky it seems. Then when you realise that there are motive threads throughout the symphony, it seems more meaningful. And this movement, weds polyphony with a romantic-era-scherzo. Glad I didn't close my ears at first listening. :)
