@Jon: 50:28 You use wing and flame cards, but activate a claw and flame ability. 1:17:00 The quest gives you 3 grit, but you only gain 2 (going from 37 to 39). 1:26:30 You attack an underground dragon without the use of a bomb. The extra cube you had left would have to be placed there. 1:28:45 You would need to have activated the bomb to attack an underground dragon, so you would have no spare cubes, preventing you from resolving an additional event. 1:38:37 You jump back to the knight's turn, move to a different space and re-resolve the swift quest despite having moved on to the goblins turn (looks like the video got edited strangely). A great playthrough as always.

Thanks for all the notes, in particular that last one is pretty embarrassing. I recorded many of the turns a couple times as I figured out the right thing to do, it looks like I slipped up there and let two versions go into the final vid. If I'd known about this right after posting I'd probably take it down and redo it, but at this point I think I'll let it ride with an annotation about it :(

@@JonGetsGames I did notice that the game winning move--by the cave player--was to take a tile that had 2 adjacent sides. But didn't you create a tile with only 1 adjacent side when you pulled the previous tile? Does this force you to take that tile, now that it has only 1 side? I'm not actually calling out a mistake, more checking on the rules concerning this...

At the end of the game, would the Cave not have to remove the tile that the goblin tribe was on, because it was only touching one other tile? Thus extending the game... Or are the removal rules different because the tribe was on it? I am confused.

I confess that I came late to this game. I picked up a used copy last summer, but hadn't had a chance to play. At the end of our first ever local encounter with the GenCon library, I taught, then played games from 8:30 in the morning until 9:00 at which point I was going to head out, but was asked by a couple if I had played Vast. None of us had. We made a poor choice and tried to learn it on the fly, which didn't go so well. Your video has brought me to the point where I will be sharing it with that same couple so we can get together (whenever that is allowed again) and enjoy this game. Thank you for showing me its VAST potential after it and I got off to a poor start!

@45:09 : As far as I know from the rules of the game, 1 Perception gives 1 Encounter, so placing a cube on the Pixie Lantern is equivalent to putting a cube to gain 1 Encounter AND 1 Movement; therefore, it's better than just getting 1 Encounter from your character sheet.

Great play through, thank you. Your game end debrief was quite well detailed and touched on many points. Of course, normally 4 players will play 4 roles and thus have to focus only on their play (and not all the interactions). However, I have this game and have found it a bit too difficult for a family type game (but close). I think the complex rules interactions (and a bit the wording in the rulebook) take this away from being a fun family game. Maybe a fun game-group game (GGG), but not really for parents and children.
@Medytacjusz

The thing I noticed about the designs of Leder Games is that you really need to know what others are doing to get the most fun out of it, instead of just focusing on your own engine. They're build around interactions, a lot of them not mandatory but requiring players' own initiative.

At 50 mins - Slither moves cubes between tracks. You moved it from a Pride track space to another pride track space. Although it looks like a different track, it is not, as clarified in the rules about how many cubes can be removed from a track in a turn - all within the pride box count as pride track.

Great play through, Jon! Based on my understanding, the Knight cannot move when her perception has been consumed, which would mean the move at 34:41 is illegal. Can you comment on how this felt as a solo multi-handed game? How was handling "hidden information" while playing everyone's turns? It's been long I know... but maybe it left a lasting impression compared to all the other games you play multihanded. Seems like the "hidden information" here isn't that big of a deal: - Knowing which sidequests the Knight has doesn't really change how the other roles adapt to her since trying to deny those will usually hurt them more than it hurts her. - Knowing which Secrets the Goblins are sitting on has the most impact on the Knight, but even then the most powerful ones tend to get used on the turn they're drawn, or Goblins can get in positions where it's impossible for the Knight to avoid them entirely. - Dragon's cards just aren't looked at until starting the Dragon's turn so those remain hidden on the other players' turns anyway. - The cave tiles can be drawn randomly I guess. - Thief has no hidden information anyway, so no problem there either.

Hi!! I loved this video. I just have a question: In the last cave turn, the last tile with 1 edge was removed, so the cave can remove tiles with two edges. This generates new tiles with 2 edges, so, cave toke it and won. But that also generates a new 1 edge tile. Instead of taking the piece that gives you the win (new 2 edges), should not take the new tile with 1 edge instead?

Honestly I don't remember anything about the game since it's been years since I played. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, sorry I can't be of more help about your question.

JonGetsGames yeah, it’s great. we just got the game recently and are having a ton of fun. - especially thx to your amazing video! if you watch from around 1:18:00 you moved the dragon behind a wall with no way out in the bottom left corner. later the dragon awakes and moves “up” in that same cornered section. i can’t understand how that could have worked. since the surfaced/awake dragon cannot move through walls... he couldn’t have gotten to the exit. :) or am i missing something?

@@seraphimipx2611 It's certainly possible that this was a mistake, unfortunately I no longer have the game and again don't remember how it is played so I can't say for certain.

@JonGetsGames

No, I actually sold my copy recently. I only ever played it twice, once for this video and once with friends. It's a fascinating design, but ultimately takes too long to play and I wasn't interested enough in dedicating the time I needed to play it enough times to review.

Wow! I too wasn't expecting the cave to win, & thought that it was slightly weaker in comparison. Still a big turning point was the knight stumbling into an event that triggered the massive tile placement, which made me curious: during the late game - with the knight having most/all of her grit -, was there any reason for the knight to trigger events/ reveal new tiles unless necessary? Also could the knight move into an unlit tile, reveal it and choose not to interact with its encounter but move onto the next one? If so I'm even more unsure of why the knight would want to trigger events late game.

Good questions, I'm not near the rules right now so I'm honestly not sure if it's a forced event reveal or not. I played it like it was, and I had the knight reveal because they were so close to death and I figured the Cave would try to give them a heal (there are a couple in the event deck) to stop the goblins from winning. It just happened that the Cave drew a far better card for themselves vs keeping their opponents in check. It's also possible that this was a misplay, I do my best to do playthroughs that have good strategy and actions in them but I still make mistakes even when playing against myself :)
@alienslysly
@alienslysly 7 жыл бұрын
It's okay :) I cross-checked the rules & BGG and you played it correct. If the knight move into an unlit tile she MUST encounter it (which encompasses reveal & all interactions with the tile). In fact it's stated that the knight can't move if she has no movement OR encounter left, whether lit or unlit. Also in the words of the designer: "The Knight is required to: - Reveal and Resolve Tiles - Resolve Encounter Tokens - Attack Goblin Tribe - Attack Surfaced Dragon The Knight may pass through: - Underground Dragon - The Thief - Treasures and Gems"

Also I wouldn't say it was a misplay given that it was based on "the knight's" knowledge of the cave event, along with predicting what "the cave" might do. On hindsight it might be a misplay, though given how close the knight was to dying it was a worthy gamble for the knight player - high possibility of dying NOW vs lower chance of cave (who's presumably in last place) gaining some ground. Though I'd assume if the knight was well off there wasn't any reason to reveal more tiles? Then again more unlit tiles = more grounds for the goblins, so there's that factor... very complicated indeed :p

The Knight screwed up so bad, she could have just triggered the event she started the round on, couldn't she? Then the Cave wouldn't have been able to place 4 whole tiles.

Honestly it's been so long since I played this that I don't really remember any of the rules. I suggest asking any questions over in the rules section of the BoardGameGeek forums for the game.

The next game will be set in a squarish haunted house and be called Vast: The Mysterious Manor. It will feature some tableau building. The characters will be a Paladin, a loose group of Orcs, a Giant shape changing Spider, the Manor itself, and a Witch. I hope to have a prototype done by this weekend as I am hoping to take it to a convention the following.

I usually do 3 player playthroughs, and occasionally do 4p when I think it makes for a much better video. Doing a 5p a game with the thief would have just taken too much time for me to make sense.

Considering there are 5 different ways to play the game, then yes I think it has reasonable replayability if you enjoy the core concept. I personally only played it twice before selling it because it felt too much like work to get it taught and played.

With the Fearsome Foes expansion, there are even more characters to swap out with the originals. You can even play with 6 players, but I think that would be too much down time between turns for each player.
@sthompson022

One of the things that bothers me about Vast is that it does indeed have a lot of down time between turns. I really wish it had some type of game mechanic that allowed each player to at least do SOMETHING during other players turns, much in the same way players are drafting cards as in 7 Wonders, or gaining resources as in Catan or Machi Koro. Ah well, I still love the game. The Fearsome Foes expansion has added a lot to the game and I look forward to continuing to play.
