I started going to a traditional Latin Mass a couple years ago after a lifetime at the Novus Ordo. I can honestly say that I am now more engaged in the mass than I've ever been... and yet I spend almost the whole mass with my mouth shut. That is amazing. The fact that I'm not constantly praying out loud, singing, responding, shaking hands, etc. allows me to really focus on Jesus, pray and read the prayers of the mass in my missal. And that is the other misconception. People say the Novus Ordo was meant for more "active conscious participation of the laity." If you're following along in the Latin/English missal, you are actually participating more than you ever would in the Novus Ordo. You can follow along with every prayer the priest says, whether they're out loud or quiet - something you cannot do in the Novus Ordo. And the sheer reverence and depth of the prayers in the Latin Mass are humbling. The Latin mass ministers to God - it is meant to please God. It faces God and focuses on God. The Novus Ordo ministers to us. It focuses on us. It is meant to please us.

I went through 16 years of Catholic education. I had absolutely no love of my faith. I hated going to the novus ordo Mass. During COVID, I found the Traditional Latin Mass and suddenly I found myself in love with the Mass. I even went back to confession after 40 years, because the TLM makes it so clear that the Eucharist is the body of Christ. Prior to that, at novus ordo, I would think nothing of receiving the Eucharist with mortal sins on my soul. Traditional Latin Mass is our birthright and we were screwed out of it. I even moved my house to be near the church where TLM is available.

I think you are still missing the point. As Father Alar says, it's not the Vatican II council's fault. Novus Ordo is beautiful if done correctly. You were apparently in a parish with problems. Don't blame the Novus Ordo. Blame how it was done.

@@markross3346 Exactly! Well said Mark💯 The progressive takeover of the Church was coincidentally going on at the same time as and decades after Vatican II occurred. It was not the council itself that was bad, but the progressive opportunists inside the Church and the passive Bishops around the world who allowed these people to implement the destructive changes we've seen in the decades following Vatican II who are to blame.

Fantastic video Fr. Alar! I was 11 in 1962, went to Catholic school, sang in the choir at the Latin Mass. Everything you said about the times back then was not only informative but powerful. My parents, aunts & uncles would sit around the kitchen table discussing Vatican 2. I remember, I never did accept what came out of it. You have just given me all the answers to all the questions I have had these past 60 years. I love Holy Mother Church, and what she has gone through in my lifetime has broken my heart. I thank God for Priests like you. You are in my prayers Father Chris, as well as your congregation. Peace and Love to you all.

I have been to the Latin Mass. I love the serenity, the chanting and the reverence. What I found missing was the community that I always get a sense of when I read the Book of Acts. When the priest is facing away from the congregation atnd you cannot hear what he is saying, and it is more difficult to follow along ( hence the bells), I felt like I was observing rayher than participating. When the priest is facing the congregation on the other side of the table, and you can hear, see and participate in what is going on, I feel as if that is the priest acting in persona Christe and we are at the table with him as at the Last Supper- communing with the Lord. That is what I found missing in the Latin Mass. I am a "cradle Catholic" who was vrry lost for a number of years, married a man who was raised Southern Baptist. His part of our spiritual journey led him eventually to Catholicism, which after a year of serious prayer ( and a lot of initial resistance in my heart) followed him. Now we teach a Catholic Catechism class on Sunday mornings before 11 am Mass. We have been doing this now for going ito our 3rd year, and we haven't even gotten a 1/4 of the ay through the book. Our biggest complaint is that there are so many things that Catholics do not know about their faith, ( no meat on Friday being one of those).and they never hear about it from the pulpit. This has become too long winded, and that was not my intent. Thank you Father Chris, I found this video when my husband and I were discussing some of these very things!

Father, as I was born in 1940, when I am deprived of access to Latin Mass, I have to attend the N.O. I follow my original Missal and find it amazing how much of the original prayers are omitted. What is left of the Canon? Prayers of preparation at the foot of the altar? Quiet time to kneel after Holy Communion and pray thanksgiving? The Leontine prayers at the end of Mass for the protection of the Church? Please look into this Father. Thank you for what you are doing Father. It is wonderful you are seeing the damage and pulling it together.

Sadly, it’s reasonable to say the viewers of this show, do not read or study the bible for themselves. When Jesus returns, we will all be held accountable for our own salvation. You call this preacher FATHER. it says in scripture that God is a jealous God, Our very own teacher, Jesus said to pray like him, starting our Father in heaven hallowed be thy name. I don’t think Jesus was praying to father Chris, he wanted us to have a personal line to God the father there are good bible teachers on you tube, you need to discern these preachers and ask Jesus to guide you to the truth. This kind of teaching does nothing to help your spiritual growth, this is like child Sunday school ask Jesus to give you his Holy Spirit that you can grow

I went to Catholic school in the 70s. I’m still learning about my faith that was never taught by my school. My parents who raised me well and I was able to remain in the faith regardless of the world, didn’t know enough to teach me more than my school was teaching me. The blessing was my mother taught me the rosary early on and my father’s love showed me God the Father’s love. He is a good father and is still alive today helping me.

Thank you so much. I used to think that my parents didn't understand the teachings of Vatican II when they would tell me that what I was being taught at Catholic school was wrong. Consequently my sister and I belonged to our folk group, I played the guitar at Mass, I belonged to a neo-progressive religious order that didn't wear a habit and bucked against the Magisterium. This talk was a BIG DEAL for me! I am a glad Trad now as you call it, and every year I grow more conservative. I am now a member of Regnum Christi and wear the mantilla at every Mass. Amen!

When abuses occur, the higher-ups will say it shouldn't be occurring, that it isn't in Vatican II, but often nothing gets done. But when it is in Vatican II the mass is to be said in Latin it's ignored just as they ignore past Council decrees.

I have always taken for granted that what came out of Vatican 2 was Gospel. Unfortunately, my father passed away at the beginning of V-2 so I never knew how he felt about it. My father was a devout Catholic and made sure we went to Mass and stayed in a Catholic Parochial School while he was alive. I never questioned what came out of V-2 and I recall thinking how odd when they took away the marble Communion railing and suddenly I could hold Our Lord in the palm of my hands before giving myself HC. I see now how these things are wrong. Fortunately our parish has a priest who changed back a lot of things like he doesn’t face us anymore behind the Altar. He has been criticized a lot for these changes but the faithful continue to attend the Parish Church.

I miss that too! I never feel like I’m giving Jesus my full self. Seems it’s MUCH more difficult to get our spiritual things BACK… than how seemingly EASY it was to take them away! Children were given HAMMERS to destroy our beautiful statues!? How SICK is that?? No wonder they grow up confused & wondering which way to go?! If our own Leaders don’t know what THEY’RE doing, how can we expect children to figure it out by themselves? 😔 What a great explanation, Father Chris! You are certainly much loved & greatly appreciated by all who watch ur program!! Thank you SO VERY MUCH for your awesome “Explanation of the Faith” series! Our cathedral began allowing us to kneel down at the remaining altar rail to receive on the tongue with the paten. It started out with just a few people, but the line quickly grew over time as people felt the need to honor our Lord the way He was meant to be honored and revered. I was amazed at the number of young adults at that rail. Sadly, our bishop put an end to that practice with no explanation. It was a sad day and they wonder why the pews are not filled.

Okay,I go to Novus ordo, but I was raised with traditional catholics. As a child I was taught to genoflect and kneel to say my prayers before mass, complete silence, I can remember not speaking until we were outside or by the doors where the priests is after mass.during my first communion kneeling and receiving the eucharist on my tounge so,I still do. I strayed away for many many years. And then came back five years ago.I got confirmed along with my 72 year old father because he didn't want to do it alone at his age.My father God rest his soul, died this year.Ihavent changed I still do all those things I was taught to do,and always will.If you go to Novus ordo,be as reverent as they do at TLM. Many of our churches have closed Its very disheartening. But we have a serious lack of priest and a lack of attendance. I went to church in a different town today. And realized it was all people over 65.what will happen when those people are gone? There are not enough people. There is a church in my town I go to pray and it's such a beautiful place and Jesus is in the tabernacle. someone comes and tends to the candles. I'm going to visit him there tomorrow poor Jesus.

I can't regret the changes that came about after Vatican II, even the abuses. My folks were Catholic in name only. I was baptized, but that was it. Once in a blue moon I went to mass with my uncle. Didn't have a clue what was going on. I went to church alone once as a kid. It was after the Council. It was amazing! I could understand what was going on. I could see the priest and what was going on. I could relate to the music. That one mass spurred my participation in my faith. You may not like the guitars, but that music encouraged me to keep coming back. It spurred my desire to be more involved in parish life. I went to the parish priest for instruction. Thereafter, I didn't call him "father." I called him "Coach." He was my coach in the faith. I joined the "folk group." We had one mass each Sunday with contemporary music. Our group of musicians played a guitar, a classical guitar, a 12-string guitar, a flute, a trombone, a French horn (briefly), a cello, a violin, a 6-foot string base, and the church organ. We worked hard to make sure the music was appropriate to the readings and the liturgical calendar. Communion in the hand lifted my spirit. I could, again, participate in the liturgy. Instead of just passively opening my mouth, I could now actively receive the host. We were taught how to properly receive the host, and I embraced it. I tried to make every movement of my hands as simple and as graceful as I could manage to honor Jesus' presence. I still do, though arthritis has twisted my hands. Even the dress code changed, and I can't tell you how much that meant to me. After the council, I could wear what I always wore everywhere - my jeans. Before, when attending the occasional mass with my uncle, dressing up was horrid. I'm not a person interested in fashion. It was so distracting and uncomfortable that I couldn't concentrate on what was going on. But my jeans - I never had to tug or pull or rearrange what I was wearing again. From then on I was able to pay attention to what was actually going on without the physical discomfort. Remember, I wasn't even a teen when the changes took place. But they had a big impact on my life. My education in the faith was, and still is, ongoing 50+ years later. I worked for the local diocese for 20 years. I volunteered for service for mass in music, as a lector, and as a commentator. I became a youth minister. I manned workshops for CCD teachers. My entire life in Christ came about because of Vatican II. Even the abuses were used by the Lord to bring me - and others - into the faith. God wastes nothing. I don't know how many others were affected as I was. But I know that one oddball kid who didn't fit in and had no foundation in the faith was saved because of the Council and what followed. And yeah, I'm still wearing jeans.

Following my post on how to follow the Tridentine mass which is the reenactment of Our Lord’s Passion on Calvary. This clearly shows that the Holy Mass is not just the Last Supper but every time we are at mass we enter into this sacred contemplation of Our Lord’s sacrifice for us. This is the reason why the Tridentine Latin mass is not just a “dead, Latin rite “ but as one saint said “is the greatest treasure on earth”.

The thing to remember is that the liturgy is not a private act of worship. It is a public act. The Church uses the specific old Latin in the liturgy because it is the language reserved for worshipping God. The same is true even if you look at the Easter Orthodox. The subset of the Greek language used by the Greek Orthodox in their liturgy for an example, is not the usual Greek words you use everyday. It contains a subset that is reserved for worship. So the point of the liturgy is not for us to understand the words but offer our own prayers during that time. Since Calvary is present during the liturgy and the sacrifice of Christ is offered again to God the father, we too can join our thanksgiving and intentions during that time to the prayers of the priest. The long stretches of silence in the traditional liturgy is not there by some mistake. Once you understand this and put it into practice, the Novus Ordo starts to look like some thing else. At best, it feels like a worship session for children. At worst, it is a mess where the liturgy undermines or suppresses Catholic truths that were very visible in the traditional mass. Just look at the confiteor or the prayers right after the “Our Father” in the old vs. new. Anyway, give it another shot and remember that we want to conform ourselves to the right way of worship than find a manner worship that fits us.

@@eufrosniad994 I prayed on what to reply. I want what I say to be done in love with right spirit: The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost Acts: 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, BECAUSE EACH ONE HEARD THEIR OWN LANGUAGE BEING SPOKEN. (RSV) I do appreciate your love respect/reverence for the Mass, and I can understand your concern that it is conducted in the proper form. I had a life changing conversion where after seeing the horror of my sinful life I repented then I was baptized by the Holy Spirit in my home. The love of God was shed abroad in my heart! Jesus came to live inside of me and I became alive with His Presence. Hallelujah! made whole. I prayed to know truth. Then ,with much difficulty, anguish and uncertainty, I came into the Church. I was afraid that I was being deceived. It was and still is a difficult adjustment in so many ways. The present condition of the Church only adds to this anxiety. What I have seen and heard by most Traditionalist I don't agree with.i have many non-Catholic family and friends who love the Lord and know Him. I have two children in heaven also. What language and form did Jesus use at the last supper. and what was used for the first 400 years of the Church?thankfully in heaven there is no misunderstanding with language and verbiage. ( I do not understand the necessity for boys to wear lacy frocks either. :(. ) Middle Ages. We need a renewal; an outpouring of the Holy Spirit where our hearts are changed and unity can be restored. Ask for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. "Ask and you will receive that your joy may be made full"

@@eufrosniad994 Good points, I'll counter that extraordinary form isn't precisely the right form of worship. I appreciate your dedication to the Latin mass and disagree with your remarks on the Novus Ordo. "Worship for children" isn't accurate at all. There are parishes that execute worship extremely well. I am blessed to attend one of them, Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, in Waterbury, CT. Some people need to think black and white about things; I am able to appreciate celebration at my parish and the parish 2 miles away that celebrates solely the extraordinary form. People travel from all over the state to attend mass and be parishioners of our basilica. Thousands at every Sunday celebration. I am extremely disheartened by the limits put on Latin mass. Mass of the Ages documentary really helped me appreciate the Latin mass. This all being said, the Latin mass needs to be more widely celebrated for the good of our Church. Blessings.
