Chicago and Northwest Indiana were a hit with a historic snowstorm on February 1st, 2015, with snowfall totals of over 16 inches. I went out to catch the first train of the day on Amtrak's Michigan line burst through all of the snowfall.
Train 350 (Chicago-Pontiac, MI) came through at or close to 100mph, appearing and disappearing in seconds. The location is a bit northeast of Porter, Indiana; Amtrak can operate up to 110mph between Porter and Kalamazoo.
The second train is Amtrak 49, the Lake Shore Limited, running at restricted speed behind a hot NS intermodal at Chesterton Indiana. This video shows NS freights in the same heavy snowfall. As the morning went on, conditions worsened:

Gotta love the exhilaration of a fast train. Wish I could have witnessed the advent of the sreamlined diesel passenger trains of the 1930's which routinely traveled at speeds of over 100 mph.

very cool. I was on UP train with parents in WY when we did 100 mph, making up time We were in diner and waiters were bumping into each other and dropping dishes. Dad worked for Frisco and knew something was up. In dome car we met a guy clocking the mileposts and he told us the speed. No wonder they were falling around, no speed limits in those days, UP passenger train on UP tracks could do what they wanted, all the freights had to get out of the way.

@rpf276
@rpf276 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Bowe The real train speed limit is the track design and standard. Class 5 track is needed to go 79 mph. New tougher class 6 standard allows passenger trains to go 110 mph the fastest you can safely go with track shared with freight. New Amtrak diesel-electric locomotives and passengers cars are designed for 125 mph, with standard modern railroad technology. It requires better railroad right-of-way road crossing design and standards too and positive train control. That's how Illinois and Michigan are going to 110 mph passenger train service along with New York state. It would be a great infrastructure investment nationwide great for states like Texas and Florida too where it will take good 110 mph rail service to make it a real fast and easier alternative to battling it out on busy city to city interstates in our cars. I think a 110 mph system is a better start than 220 mph with expensive special no freight high speed rail and zero as in none at grade road crossings, at all with big exception of NE and California which need it right now and have a huge potential passenger base to support it now.

I work S+C up in Canada, and I'm curious as to what ITCS stands for. It's not an acronym we use up here. Edit: Never mind, lol. Figured it out myself. For anybody else wondering, it's a type of Positive Train Control wherein the train will slow and stop itself when it picks up an unpermisive signal off the coded track circuits. also GPS and lots of other sofistomocated gizmos.

Your average Joe • sokay, Joe! I live in the mid-South, and we go crazy when we have a little bit of snow! We clear the store shelves of staples as if we'll be snowed in for months. I worry when y'all get snow or frigid temps down in Florida, because that could wipe out or severely damage the awesome crops you grow..citrus, etc. We used to be big farmers, so we know what devastation bad weather events can bring. (Of course great weather and rain at the right times made for bumper crops, too.) Anyway, snow is beautiful even in photos - but not always welcome and always, always dangerous for travelers.
