I said that there would be a report back. Well, Sunday car wouldn't start after work, Wednesday, replaced started, didn't work Wednesday night, came across ur video Thursday evening, bought parts at Radio Shack, Friday morning, assembled parts, assembled in car, car started Friday evening, drove car from work to home, while people looked with amazement. I know this post is old but I just had this issue with my 1999 Buick LeSaber. Thank you for the video it was extremely helpful because a shop fix of close to $500 on a car almost 20 years old is tough to justify, I will add that there is a fix with fewer steps, please let me explain. I was confused and only half understood about the resistance chip on the key and I was discouraged initially looking up fixes because they all included the voltage/ohm reader, which not being strong on electronics was extremely discouraging. So I finally watched through the videos and understood the problem completely, two ****ing wires that run to the ignition tumbler, and it is, yes a common problem with this system, it seems very rarely there is actually a problem with the VATS module, all my research showed this to be accurate. I have found that there is a process that requires the volt meter (if you take it to a locksmith they should have a tool that grabs the resistance) and there is a variance (usually) of only 15 different resistances that your key could have, a google search can bring up a chart that is listed 1 through 15 and its ohm rating and variance in -/+ resistance for that system. So finding the resistance is step one, step two I went to the Source electronics store and bought a pack of resistors with a wide variance and since I don't know how the stupid color ring markings work, my most time consuming task was matching a resistor manually with my reader to find one I needed ( key was #5: resistance read 1129 with a -/+ of 1085/1195, I used a resistor or 1180: brown, red, red, gold). After successfully determining the the resistor I need, I removed the panel under the dash attached to the fuse box and located the Orange wire which inside has two white wires and followed it to its base, to save having to cut anything I took my new resistor (which has an inch of lead on either end) and bent it and shoved both ends into the metal ends of each white wire which held it firmly. Boom! Car started! So I took it out, cut down the ends a little and folded them and reinserted into the ends of each white wire where they go into the terminal, which went in firm and secured it with electrical tape. It now runs and in the pack of resistors ($6.99 for 84, 42 of each resistance from 100- 300K) I took out the second identical resistor of which I used and secured it in my car, If I hit a bump hard enough to dislodge it (unlikely) I have the know how to take out three screws and slap another in. This was a quicker "redneck fix" that no one offered on any video and I understand that because the need to solder the wires is the ultimate "secure" fix, but I hate cutting wires on any harness in a car unless absolutely necessary and in my eyes as soon as I have to splice/solder anything, it is no longer a "quick" fix, this problem with a volt meter, a pack of resistors, and knowledge how to read the color markings could make this a literal five minute fix. I want to help as you all have and I will be posting this exact explanation to the top five posts about this in hopes to help the lazy and would love feedback from the authors of these videos and others, I will not make my own video as I have no channel and anyone searching probably wont find it, so I would like to ad this tidbit of my time saving experience as it is the fix I was looking for originally and isn't as overwhelming. I will add as I have seem many authors have, this is just an explanation and no one is telling you to bypass this system, nothing is better then a certified professional assisting in these repairs and I hope anyone reading read through till now because yes, be mindful of the airbag wire, even though you aren't cutting anything take out the fuse for the airbag, safety first. Thank you and again I hope I could add some extra help to a problem we will face for a few more years yet. Dustin

Great Vid Jim. Easiest to understand of all I have seen on this subject. I might add since Radio Shack has gone (Filed for Liquidation 2/5/15), you might check EBay for the resistors. I found those I needed for $1.99 (free shipping from California). Can find Ohm Meters there for less than $10.00. I have been buying there since 2000 and had very few problems with anything I purchased since that time. This procedure worked on my 99 Cad

+Jim Gillis Hi again Jim Im having a problem. I have a 99 cad. the key is showing 1124 ohms. I put some resistors together and got them at 1126 ohms. when I hook them to the wires (Orange wire with 2 white wires), the ohms drop to 834 ohms and the alarm goes off and the car wont crank? Have any idea whats going on? I added enough resistors to get a reading of 1102 ohms when hooked to the white wires but the alarm still goes off and the car wont crank. Cant figure that one out?

Thank you SOOOOO much for this! Another woman who got my Caddie (2000 Eldorado) up and running again! Really appreciate your effort. BTW, I had a locksmith tell me the key code, a 12... which was 6040ohms. Well, he offered (lol) to sell me a resistor kit... with that very one in it, for $80. I ordered the one I needed (along with 14 others that aren't for my VATS code) on Amazon for $5. I'm MOBILE AGAIN!!!
@ajeepgal8 жыл бұрын
I would say for those having issues... make sure you put the resistor in the correct "side" of the wire. We had it on the wrong side at first. And bypass the whole multimeter thing and just ask a locksmith to give you a key code. Lots of websites avail that give you the code value. We tried using the meter, but kept getting different values. Just skip that and go for a definitive... OR call your dealership with your VIN and they can tell you the value. Mine wanted $50 for that info tho, and the locksmith was free.

So you just twisted the extra ohms together or did you dodder them together? Did you HAVE to have a new key or would the car have started (and the Anti-Theft Device disabled) anyways? I’m wondering if this Anti-Theft System is shutting down my Fuel Pump because I’m experiencing a Crank No start issue repeatedly. In late December my Anti Theft System started acting up... Horn honking, Marker Lights Flashing, Buttons In interior clicking repeatedly 😩🤷♀️ I’m at my wits end. Something electrical in that Valet system seems to be draining the Battery. New Battery, New Starter and I’m still unable to get my 1998 Buick Lesabre started. She just coughs and splutters yet started fine last Saturday and Sunday after the new Starter was installed (that I may have burned out trying incessantly to get the car started for 15 solid minutes of turning over). 😳HELP Chick 🐥 in 🇨🇦

Solder the wires to the resistor in the key itself (spare key) and tuck the whole thing up under the dash. Works great and you don't have to go find a resistor.

Hey thanks for the vid and now im faced with this problem. So do I connect both ends of the resistor onto the white wires that leads into the engine and leave the top white wires going to the ign dangling ? Jim, I'm trying to help my father do this for his '94 Camaro. His security light comes on when he tries to start it. We bought a pack of resistors from Radio Shack. When reading the chip in his key, it reads at 7.51 KΩ of resistance. We wired some resistors in series until we reached 7.61 KΩ, yet the security light still does not go off. We know we have it wired to the correct wires. Can you offer any advice on how to proceed? We'd rather not spend $600 to get it fixed... again.

I tried but made a mess. Ended up taking to a Car Stereo Alarm place. Got it done for $100. Kept cutting the wires too short so it was hard to work with. Don't think I ever got the resistors tight enough. Great tutorial however. At least I was able to let them know I knew what was wrong.
@albinoalonzo80828 жыл бұрын
Good practice would be to cut equidistant from both ends, or right in the middle of the cable. That will give you the most lee way on both sides. Once the insulation has been CAREFULLY stripped away (this is the part that most mistakes happen as often a few strand of wire are cut increasing the wires resistance) then take some similar gauge wire (12 gauge, 10 gauge etc..) and extend each end of the wire. This will make testing easier since you'll have whatever length you need, and any additional cutting can be done to the extension instead of the original wire. Once your all done you can either decide to remove the extension or permanently install it with some flux/solder and some heat shrink. I like to do this with short extensions (10 inches or less) as the resistance it adds to the circuit is basically negligible ( especially if you used thicker wire than the original) and leaves you with more room than you started with. Should you ever need to cut that wire again, you can take away from the extension instead of the original.
