Every aspect of how the 80'S music was made was touched in this interview. I started in music in the 80'S when I was 13, the first time I put a hand on a Synth, I said this is the future but my main instrument was the drums and yes I use a Simmons SDSV wich still got today and later I got a Linndrum and my first Synth was a Roland VP-330 that I bought almost brand new from a old man that didn't like it. In the 80'S the structure of music was also different, technology was emerging and when MIDI came out everything where more easier but the individualism in sound was key to the charming of the 80'S and that also is lost today, everybody basically sound the same, I'm tired of hearing the TR-808 in every tune. Excellent interview, Cheers!

The 80s ruined me for music. (I sound like an old lady here!) In many ways I'm still stuck there. I don't care for much of today's 'dance' music - the music itself sounds all the same, and the lyrics are so shallow, so banal. It's cool that Espen is still dedicated to using the 80s gear to make that awesome 80s sound. I'll be checking out his channel. Really enjoyed this interview, Vaughn!

Since you mentioned Trevor Horn, he once said in an interview that the main difference between recording sessions in the 80s and now is that now they write lyrics, produce and record at the same time. Back in the 80s they wrote a great song with meningsfull lyrics, and then they produced it based on the contents of the lyrics, which made the artists go down a different lane. And sometimes they spent a week just designing one sound.

@@EspenKraft interesting :). Of course, creativity (luckily) shines in many different ways. However, in general, l think Trevor has a point. Even in classic art, like Leonardo Da Vinci you can find similar philosophy. In music, I think Alan Wilder is another great example, if you catch my drift :).

"Pop" music has become an insult of sorts, for good reason in many cases. Pop itself stems from the word popular ie popular culture. The difference between 80's and even 90's pop music and modern pop music is the lack of actual artists/artistry/creativity. Today it's more of an ends to a means... With the goal to create this dumbed down easily accessible sound that makes $. IMHO In the 80s and 90s the creators of pop music were artists. Loved this interview Vaughn! Definitely very interested in more topic based talks with you and Espen!

Found this one going back through your channel after joining a few months ago.. really, really interesting.. one of the best you've produced? 😉 It really resonates with me.. but in a very different way, because I started making music in the 80s but stopped in the early 90s after all my gear was stolen.. I started out using CV/Gate synced gear - an Roland SH101 and a pair of MC202s and then with the advent of MIDI bought a very early UMI BBC B Micro based sequencer (from the maker, Lynton, after being put in touch by Vince Clarke who I'd become a fanboy of..) (I'd love to have acquired one of his MC4s, I have some of his old gear). I also have a really interesting view because my daughter has found her own way in making music, not at all influenced by me paradoxically, using a Mac and only VSTs (and some sampling) (she went to a music college, DBS in Bristol). She's awesome too. Influenced by and references so many artists but doing her own thing, original, fresh and yeah, just awesome 😃 In the end it comes down to the strength of the ideas, the tunes - in the end it's all about the music. Thank you both 🙂 Lots I agreed with on this video..

Espen brings up a couple of good points. The difference between US and European 80's sound, where the US sound had a heavier bass. I've been listening to a lot of early 80's post-disco R&B lately and wondering why it's not also called 'Synthpop' since it's mainly synths but it's funkier than the Euro sound with more bass. Both styles share a common ancestery. Also, he brings up a good point about 80's synths and collectors versus players. I love my old gear and I know part of it is nostalgia for synths I fell in love with as a teen in the 80's. But the idea of spending thousands for collectable old gear just seems silly to me. ESQ-1's and SY77's are powerful 80's synths for not a lot of money. The only way I'll ever own an Oberheim is if Behringer releases their tribute.
