Wonderful video. I've just done my front ones today (used the g clamp method but used the old brake pad as a barrier to the piston) and weather permitting am going to do the back ones next week, so this is really helpful. Only difference seems to be the sockets I'll need but I'll check beforehand. Thanks very much!
@stevewinter90335 жыл бұрын
The front calipers piston can be pushed back by hand, no need for a G-Clamp! Only the rear piston needs winding back..

Hey Martin... As an avid DIYer myself I really enjoy watching your videos, keep it up... Just a Top Tip when it comes to lubricating slide pins. You're best advised to use specific brake caliper grease or silicone grease only... Most other standard types of grease will react with the rubber boots and eventually eat away at them. All the best mate... And of course all the best to your lovely family... Cheers. Rico.

Good video. It's always a good idea to squirt lubricant down the handbrake cable deep down inside the gaitor every now & then using the small pipe that comes with the can so the handbrake will fully release,otherwise the rear brakes will bind on a little if you don't do this and will cause the discs to warp eventually and you will lose speed of course with the binding. Also don't forget to lubricate the handbrake return arm on the back of the caliper.

Good video Martin. I've noticed as I get older that I need a bit of tube on the ratchet handle more often than I used to. Is it bolts being put on tighter, or me getting frail and weak? I'd like to think it's the former - but I know it's probably the latter!

why do you need to take the lid off the brake fluid reservoir, is this an important step ? do you need to replace the brake fluid after this ?
@retrorestore7 жыл бұрын
As you push the pistons back into the calipers, the fluid level wants to return to the reservoir and removing the lid, makes this easier.
@omuleanu7 жыл бұрын
I think the lid has a "valve" or something like that (valve might not be correct word), kinda like the antifreeze fluid lid, and under pressure it releases air, so there shouldn't be a risk of bursting anything
@retrorestore7 жыл бұрын
It might have, It will also give you the chance to check the fluid anyway. Never a bad thing.

Are the e18 bolts the standard size? I’ve seen other vids where the calliper bolts seem to be ordinary nuts??
@retrorestore5 жыл бұрын
Don't know bud, sorry
@Pkdimmock5 жыл бұрын
One thing I don't get is why do you 'wind' the caliper piston in. I've seen other vids where people use a block of wood and a bar to push the piston in. Don't the pistons just need compressing in?
@retrorestore5 жыл бұрын
Not on modern cars, many have to be screwed in.
@Pkdimmock5 жыл бұрын
@@retrorestore i actually noticed when watching a second time that the two pins on the piston tool go inside 2 slots in the piston. Hope my discs come off as easy as yours 😂 Thanks for the vid.

Quick fix to occasional screeching sound. Just a heads up to anyone if they think they need to change there breaks or in my case was told by a mechanic the squealing was because I needed a new wheel bearing. I checked under my car and found that the metal stone guard has slightly bent towards the break discs. Bent it back slightly and problem solved. I have a Astra VXR and Im only mentioning this because a few months later it happened on my mates 5 door Astra. Might be a common problem and a 1min fix :) hope this helps and saves someone money

Martin need you're help with rewinding the calliper back, I have the same vxr and using tje ssme windback tool, however the calipper has come out just a little more than usual, so when rewinding - I can't get the retaining plate inbetween the calliper? Any ideas ?
@retrorestore6 жыл бұрын
Try a G Clamp and a pair of grips to wind in as you turn the clamp.
@omarismith36556 жыл бұрын
Success! Finally managed to wind it back in with the G clamp. HOWEVER, went to change my disc, top e18 come off fine on the carrier, the bottom one is so badly corroded it just won't grip the e18 socket? I've tried to tap it in with a hammer and also use a smaller size hex socket on it. But I'm stumped ! Any ideas Martin ?

Don't forget to bed the discs an pads in properly. All you have to do is to be gentle on the brakes for a couple of hundred miles and they should bed in nicely.
