I disagree with the bladder issue, yes you may need to stop for a few minutes to stretch and eat a sandwich, but I can't stand the fact that I have a car that does less km that my current car which is 900km easy. I'll wait for an electric car with solid state batteries or better range. However I have to say that I like how they made it, apart from the boot release which is not in an ideal place.

@@chrislecouteur2360 I'm sad to hear that obviously, unfortunately, and this is not my choice, the change from burning fossil fuels to renewables and electric vehicles has become 'political.' This show is definitely about the future, it openly and enthusiastically promotes renewable energy and sustainable technology. That again is seen by some as being overtly 'political.' And the particular president (ex) you referred to passed so many laws and did everything he could to deny there was a problem and hold back back transition, that any criticism of that short sighted and dangerous stupidity is also clearly political. I just want to say that the president (ex) is the most destructive political figure seen in America in my lifetime. He is very very political and I unsubscribed, unfollowed and now, thankfully, so has America.

@@chrislecouteur2360 If a manufacturer does something stupid like leaving out safety equipment then you can publicise it and sue them for criminal negligence and the resultant loss of life, and I don't think anyone would be surprised. I don't think an ex president should be immune from punishment from what appears to be criminal negligence while in office. Guilt should be determined by the courts.

I completely agree, the price markup is just ridiculous. I would love to buy this car, it's a lovely colour (for which you have to pay extra btw but I digress) in this metallic green and it's a good size for a small family but 10k extra on top of the base price for the dirty model makes no sense and really makes potential buyers think twice about committing to a purchase.

Driving well demands enormous concentration. Try the Advanced Test, where you have to give a running commentary of your progress. It's absolutely exhausting, and that ought to be the MINIMUM level required for safe progress. But watching the road is boring. The rise of 'driver aids' and autonomous vehicle technology is a perfect excuse to pass the responsibility for collisions onto something else. "Not my fault. The car didn't see the cyclist. They ought to fit bikes with crash-avoidance systems..." They do. It's called a cyclist. Cars used to have 'drivers'; now they're just bored, dozy passengers swiping screens. More buttons and switches, please. Come on, boys: minds on the road and hands on your knobs. (Whoops...)

Greetings from Germany! Really nice review of the Mocca-e. Only sad thing is, that they can't satisfy the demand, at least here in Germany. A friend of mine ordered a Mocca-e in November last year and in December Opel cancelled his order, because there were too many orders already and it would be unlikely that he get this car in 2021 at all. I also agree on the high prices, but I think competition from China will force European manufacturers to drop prices in the next few years. By the way, your review of the Corsa-e last year contributed to my decision to buy one and I did not regret it. Keep up the good work.

Another nice looking EV. It's going to be hard to find a replacement for our old Leaf. I have been driving 24kwh Leaf's for over 5 years now and 150ish miles is more than enough. I liked your video very much, always with a sence of humor. I have ordered an Opel Mokka myself and after the government subsidy in Germany I pay about 9,000 EUR less and thus come to about the price of a patrol car. However, I would doubt that the price of the Mokka e could be much cheaper. The car batteries are still quite expensive. You can see that from the fact that Tesla, as a pure e-car manufacturer, has always had quite high prices compared to gasoline cars. If the batteries were much cheaper to produce, Tesla would have had an enormous price advantage, because they would not have to take into account that many gasoline engines would still have to be built.

Agreed, or would at least give it consideration, were I in the market (which sadly, I'm not). Being a Vauxhall, they probably don't hold their residuals that well, so year-old models might go for a decent price. But I suppose someone needs to order them to begin with to make it to that section of the market.

Sometimes it goes the other way though. I just ordered a 36 grand EV on a 3 year lease, the cost is a little over £250 a month including servicing and vat and its really well equipped. My current car, a Seat Ateca Xcellence Petrol cost me £365 a month and was 30 grand new.

in 3 years of driving an EV, it's never been a problem as either I charge at home therefore I have an empty boot or after I have emptied the boot of luggage when I reach my destination i.e. destination chargers. Charging on the road is done at rapids, so the lead is not required

I have a Mokka E and love it. I had an electric MG and it suddenly ran backwards whilst driving uphill!!!! Plus had battery problems and AA said it wasn't fit for purpose. Agency and MG took no responsibility. So be warned don't have an MG electric.

​@@robsmith1aEvery signle thing like laptops/phones etc after 4 years battery sucks a**. I doubt that they are so good that it will last longer then 8yrs. I have 2 cars, and love the electric solution esp simplicity of the construction. But one of my cars is 2002 V6 audi with LPG. I doubt that electric car can be still running on same batteries after 19 years. And i didnt have to invest more then 500$ in the engine to keep it running. Also it uses around 6$ per 100km. One huge disadvantage of electric is heating in winter.

@@3dvox712 It is fortunate that car battery packs are managed to ensure a much longer life than in a laptop or phone where they are destroyed pretty quickly by charging to full and then emptying them on a daily basis with no thermal management. Battery packs are falling in price rapidly and if a pack starts to degrade most are modular and only the offending module needs replacing. I also think than in ten years time there will be a lot of cheap third party battery upgrades available. I have a Mercedes SLK at present but for three years from 2017 I had a Renault Zoe and didn't notice any changes in the range of the car after that time (there would be some degradation but the software on the car would manage the buffer to hide that from me). Maintenance costs over the three years totalled less than one service for the Mercedes. My main dislike with EVs is lack or choice and the weight of the battery packs makes them less fun to drive. I am sure this will change over time.

My first car was a 1974 Opel Manta Rally which was the 70s version of this green - Signal Green they called it. I loved that little car. Even had the same black bonnet and roof. I hope someday PSA will bring Opel back to the States. I would buy one in an instant.

Interesting point you make Robert about manufacturers deliberately inflating prices on EV’s to clear the backlog of their combustion powered models. And agree, the amount of engineering that goes into an EV is not on the same level as a traditional car. The problem is, many of us (myself included) are delaying the purchase of an EV until prices start to look sensible. I don’t understand why manufacturers expect their customers to invest in the future if the price points are not competitive with their combustion counterparts. All rather counter intuitive if you ask me. Great show though and love your enthusiasm. Highly infectious, in a good way... Pip Pip!

If you're coming from a Fiesta (and, presumably, liked it) then my recommendation would be to look at the Corsa e / e208 (pretty much the same car) and the Renault Zoe. The Zoe is a fantastic car, but it doesn't have rapid charging as standard which is completely irrelevant for some people (I rapid charged my Leaf less than ten times in five years, for example) and a deal breaker for others.

I have test driven the e208 and zoe, found the zoe was a bit better due to the e208 having such a tiny wheel and hard to get it into postion to see guages. Iplan to do lots of road trips when I get an ev to go explore places, driving without planning in a way, why I think my best bet will be going the extra mile for the tesla m3 LR

First suggestion, Tesla. If Tesla isn't your thing because you need android auto or something Tesla doesn't have that is a must have for you.. Then my next suggest is the ID3, ID4 if you need something bigger, Volvo XC40 recharge, or the Polestar 2 (The Polestar is a bit more expensive but I've heard wonderful things about it), and then at the highest end the Porsche Taycan.

In contrast to the cars in fast and the furious the cars in Manta Manta were really traffic-safe! That's a fact. But I really like this film too as I was a kid. It's a Kult-Film, as we say in Germany. Doesn't know it's also known in other regions. There are two films about the Opel Manta. Once "Manta Manta" and "Manta der Film" (Manta the Movie)

There's one thing about pricing, not for now but in the future, rumors of battery shortages, I don't if that's just from manufacturing them fast enough, or because of material supply not fast enough, but if the latest PC Chips shortage has anything to go by, causing PC components and Console prices to inflate, this could happen to cars, especially when we're wanting them to be cheaper.

Your discussion on the price difference e vs. ice is interesting. However, i cant help to think that the government incentives are what could be driving a significant part of the delta. If one was to have the gov incentive, how would that new price compare to the ice version? Here in Québec the rebate is $13k CAD (7.4k GBP) and i have a feeling this is not going unnoticed by car makers... Could they simply be pricing the subsidies into their prices, which is the goal of the subsidies in a way... thoughts?

No. This is £13,000 more than the petrol car. £10,000 after the grant is applied. Robert is right, these manufacturers know, if the delta was small loads of people would choose the EV. So they artificially restrict sales.

This got me thinking. I take it there are country specific ev incentives that must vary considerably. How much do those impact the ev vs ice price delta in each respective country? For example are car manufacturers simply keeping a 10k delta between the ev and ice with the incentive which would support Pauls comment and Robert's hypothesis. Or does the delta change based on incentives? Is there someone doing a BA course in marketing or economics that could take this on as a project? ;)

And you got 6000€ back from the state (if you conformed to all conditions, which wasn't always the case). What I understand even less is that some brands advertise with the incentive already subtracted, and some not.

Who in their right minds would buy the electric version that has half the range and a £10k price hike... I agree and it’s ridiculous to charge 10k more. However, the running costs are massively cheaper. It would cost me to do 10,000 miles in a year, £100 electricity (1p a mile on octopus energy EV tariff). If that was petrol, at 35 mpg it’s about £1500. And no road tax. But we all know the real reason it cost 10k more, that’s because the manufacturers are not going to make as much money on servicing and things going wrong! In fact, the only thing to service on electric car, is a washer bottle top up. I know, I have a six year old Nissan Leaf. Stopped servicing it two years ago, utterly pointless.

@@HelpfulTimes If you're a low mileage driver like me (well under 4000 miles a year) the much lower running cost for EVs doesn't come CLOSE to offsetting the enormous price increase over an ICE car! I spend typically under £500 a year on fuel, my servicing costs are low and my road tax is £20! There's no WAY I can justify an EV til we get near price parity (threatened by afficionados for years - but really, nowhere in sight!!)

But for a manufacturer to put on theses saving onto the price of a Ev in the first place is just wrong. There is no excuse for it. You might as well store cheap or free electric in the vehicle to use when energy prices are higher and even sell some of that energy back to the grid at a higher price than you paid for it. Again making owning a Ev a need. Rather than a expensive want. I have a hybrid I don’t pay road tax, I only fill up once a month I do around 440 miles on average for that tank of fuel and I’ve had 4 years free servicing and I only pay £179 at 2.9% apr and the first 42 months was at 0% at £199. So I have no Incentive to buy a electric vehicle until I can have bi directional charging as standard and at the same price of the fossil fuel version. Which I believe is still 3-5 years away.

That button to override the charging timer is a simple but very useful function: I have plugged my car a few times and forgot to change the timer, and arrived at the car just to find it didn’t charge at all (good thing I have a PHEV for now).

Yep. I hate the shoe-vibe of modern cars. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Lumpy and stumpy with tiny side windows, looking like they're overweight and constipated, squatting on the bog with their eyes squeezed shut. It goes for almost all of today's designs. Perhaps it's because everybody uses the same CAD software instead of the back of an envelope. I don't care about "Oh, but it improves the side-impact protection figures," because I wouldn't be seen dead in one. [Joke.] Heck, even McLarens look like orthopaedic 'corrective' shoes. Yuk.
