Hi
This car came to me after had an engine replacement due to a bad head gasket...
The complaint was that the radiator fan was not kicking in when the coolant reached the 90°C...
But, what was actually wrong, was something completely different...
Follow me on this video to find out what was the problem and how to resolve it.
Hope you enjoy the video.

With coolant added and under pressure an engine coolant system can be 120 plus before it boils. It's usually radiator caps on Vauxhall's that cause bother, seen loads faulty. They leak and don't let the coolant pressurise then the temp for the fan to come on isn't reached. I've seen Vauxhall's that are set to 114 degrees. Dash's show running temp at 90 because that's how it's always been and would frighten most people to see it over 100. With the new bottle the system is under pressure it changes the temp. Always fit new cap with a head gasket fault.

The coolant system should be pressurized all the time. Being pressurized, will not allow cooland to boil at 100 degrees Celsius and the engine wil run more efficient with high temperature. Grate video, like always!

The temperature gauges on modern cars aren't really accurate and are just there to assure the driver that the engine is within normal operating temperature they actually have a really large buffer range, on VAG cars for instance when it's bang on at 90º the actual temperature can be anywhere between 75ºC to 115ºC.

Makes me wonder if someone cut the expansion tank deliberately to either ruin the engine or use that to sell them a replacement (oh look water is coming out your head gasket is gone) 🙄 there are so many idiots out there anything is possible. I think the sensor in the bottom of the tank is probably to signal that it's run dry as opposed to temperature. Super video though, another great fix 👍🏻

i think if you looked at the dial the temp would show about 110 right when the fan kicked in then would go back to 90 and fan would shut off. Happens on mine, same car. Currently have problem where the fan did not shut off after cooling the temp, not sure if you've come across that. Working since but haven't been stuck in traffic as I was that day. Relay? Coolant bottle looks low, no leaks around right side, but maybe water pump.

Probably someone trying to hide an overheating issue, maybe to sell the car on quick? I bought a car once that was overcooling , but also losing coollant. Checked the thermostat and it wasnt there ! Put a new one in and the car was overheating. Took it to a mechanic and it turned it there was a small crack in the cylinder head. The previous owner obviously knew this and tried to bodge it and pass the problem on to me.

If he had previous engine with blowing head gasket he cuts expansion bottle to relieve gasses that gets in coolant. They create such high pressure to burst hoses or force coolant through vent.

I had similar case - Insignia, 1.8 petrol, costumer came in to me with fan problem. Fan was running all the time, no temp readings on dash. Obviously I checked for fault codes and it was one - temp sensor open circuit. Before he came in to me, car had head gasket done and before he had done it, everything was ok with fan. When I started to look on temp sensor, I was in shock - somebody cut out a piece of wire with plug to temp sensor!!! I suggested to costumer to come back to previous guy to repair it. After few days he came back to me and said that previous "mechanic" said that he isn't car electrician and he won't do it!!! Finally I fixed it, sent costumer to scrap yard to buy piece of wire with plug, soldered it on and it was fine. I don't understand why people doing stupid things like these ones. Even if he broke plug when he was lifting head for gasket replacement, why he cut out wire?? So stupid... BTW another great video shoving how bad some "mechanics" are "skilled"

I've had similar issues with an Astra J 1.6. Bought it with a cracked header tank, replaced it, then the temperature sensor played up with a broken wire. Sorted that out, then the water pump seal started leaking. Sorted that out, then the radiator hoses started leaking. Sorted them, then the thermostat heater (yes, the ECU opens the stat up with a heater) went. That's the connector in your video on the thermostat that isn't the temperature sensor. So far so good, the fans seem to be working on full speed, but I've not yet seen low or mid speed. Will have a session commanding them on using the lo/mid/hi relay connectors in the fuse box. On top of that this car has cam timing issues. That's another of your videos. You could have made a whole series of videos with this one car. I hate Astras now, they are too cheaply made. Too many computer modules. On a luxury car that's fine, but on a cheap car the computers and the sensors are cheap and fail all the time. I still have to investigate why the seat heaters aren't working, why the OBD port reads 1v lower than battery voltage, sort numerous earth and wiring problems and find out where the seam in the roof is leaking and seal it. This car is so bad it should go Woof!

@@LMAutoRepairs Yes, the usual thing on cooling systems: fix one weak point and then the next weakest fails. But this car has a whole host of problems. In fact, a problem of the same sort happened with me 3 weeks ago when a 2008 Nissan Altima with 3.5L came to me with the check engine light is on and cooling fans not working even when the car gets overheated. I scanned the car & I found a code for the ECTs, I checked wires (5V ref & Ground) the circuit was intact from the ECM to the ECTs, everything was good. I decided to buy new ECTs because when I plug the connector into the ECTs the car starts stumbling and it shuts off straight away and when you restart the car with (foot on pedal) it keeps running until it reached boiling temperature while the cooling fan is shut off. even with the new ECTs nothing's changed, I left the car and the next morning I checked the Live Data I found that the ECTs was reading (-40) celsius even when the connector is unplugged!. When I keep the connector plugged the car won't start unless I unplug it then the car would start with cooling fans at high speed. That problem really freaked me out and I couldn't find a path to solve the problem. Then the customer took the car back to another workshop who found that the cooling fan Relay was not working properly they replaced the relay, the problem was solved! A relay really?!!

Hey, I have an Opel Insignia 2015 B20. MY radiator fan is not working, I have changed the temperature sensor and the thermostat. But it is still not working. Could you help me out? Is there a radiator relay, do you know the location for this. I googled but it shows for Insignia A and not B cars.
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs Жыл бұрын
You will just going to carry on changing parts, if you don't stop and diagnose it correctly... Give it a scan, and check live data... You can try to actuate the fan, if it runs, then you issue will not be the fan system... Hope that helps... 👍👍👍

@@LMAutoRepairs Hey thank you for the information. I have tried to start the fan manually and it works fine. I have cleaned the radiator too and put in a new thermostat. Does the thermostat sensor have any connection with the fan? or the temperature sensor? Do you reside in Ireland or UK? I do not have a scan to check live data. Do you know where I can get that checked? Thanks again. (The isn't any codes coming up, I tried to check with a code checker device from amazon. The engine does not over heat and the fan does not work, but I get a message on my dashboard saying to switch engine off after driving 5-10 kms)
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs Жыл бұрын
OK... so, if actuating the fan with the tool, the fan works, clearly there is nothing wrong with it... When you say the fan does not run/works, under which circumstances are you expecting it to do so, and it doesn't?

@@LMAutoRepairs When I start the engine, and the car is running. The radiation fan does not turn on. After few minutes of driving, I get a message on my dashboard, to switch the car engine off. The engine overheats and basically the water is not circulating. I am expecting the radiator to turn on when I start the engine. It is a diesel car, there is no coolant leak either or head cylinder leak. Engine is running fine, no trouble with starting the car either. It is just the radiator fan that is not working. So not sure what the issue is :(
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs Жыл бұрын
OK... I had a quick look at diagrams... the fan is controlled directly by the engine ecu, by activating a relay in the engine compartment... there is about 5 relays on that system, but again, if when you activate the fan, it runs, then I wouldn't blame that side as the issue... To be fair, the fan shouldn't activate just by driving a few minutes... again, you need to check live data, and see what readings are reaching the ecu... A bad water pump can also be considered... if the water is not circulating, it will or can give you similar symptoms... 👍👍👍

16:04 I've seen this before I've also seen people drill holes into the bottle they don't realise these cars run at a very hot temperature lots of people just put water in their cars and it boils and they think it's overheating but it's not what some even kick in at 108 and 110 degrees depending on the model of your car I personally think it's ridiculous but that's just way they set them people don't realise the system and don't know and understand what they are dealing with and they try and budget like this utter ridiculous

On the astra h the sensor on the tank is for the check control system. You need to active it in the infotainment screen with op-com but you also need to washer level sensor installed otherwise it wil always show your out of washer liquid.

Another case of Bogging. Car gets bought by used car dealer he only employs cheap labour. Tells the cheap labour to just get the car running to sell on quick with little or no money to be sent, chances are neither the booger or dealer knows what they are doing. That where the bogging starts. No thoughts for the poor punter that buys the shed.

Slaging other mechanics is not very professional as well when yourself don’t look confident at what you say. You say everything is fine but your thermostat is naked
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs 10 ай бұрын
I might not be too confident, but I learn and do things properly... I don't bodge things pretending I know what I am doing... as most of the repairs I do, I don't know what the problem is, I investigated, learn how things work so I then understand how to fix them... Nothing wrong with the thermostat by the way... 👍👍👍
