This is such a brilliant and beautiful album. One of my very favorites. Loved your track by track description. The melodies, lyrics and vocals by Ochs are sublime and your are so right about how important Lincoln Mayorga’s piano is such a big part of the success of this album.

Thanks Mazzy! This video (like the one I did recently on Liege and Lief) didn't get that much attention, so I appreciate that you took time to watch. All the best!

Very informative and interesting to hear all of the details about Pleasures of the Harbor. With the LOL moment about John Wayne's Sweedish accent. Almost as funny as a Kangaroo dancing an Oompa waltz. 😉 Folk is an area of my collection which is almost non-existent say for a some Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Fairport Convention, Bert Jansch, and Bob Dylan. What a sad ending for Phil Ochs. I will definitely give this album a listen. Thanks for informative video!

Thanks Michael. You gave me the nudge I needed to get Tape From California. Nice review. You made me look at my copy and realize I had it mis-cataloged/transposed as 1976. Take care, Chris
@michaelpdawson2 ай бұрын
Hi Chris! Tape from California is another great one, where you still get the elaborate production and abstract poetry of Pleasures of the Harbor on some numbers, but also a return to acoustic folk and protest on others. Thanks for watching!

phil could and should have been on columbia records. ochs and dylan weren't going to have to become roommates!...i've loved his a&m records for my entire adult life.

It's interesting to speculate how Phil's career might have been different if he had been signed to Columbia. One thing's for sure, those A&M albums are all brilliant. Thanks for watching!

Interesting video Michael. I don't actually own any Phil Ochs on vinyl despite the fact that I really like that period of American folk / singer-songwriters. I did actually pick up a cheap copy of his first album from a record fair a couple of years ago but it turned out to be in a pretty bad state so I didn't keep it. The needle drops sound really good - will keep an eye out for the album. Take care... Pete

Michael, Bravo!, fantastic review of a classic album that I never heard. Yeah, Dylan and Och's on the same record label would have not been a good idea, musically and monetarily. That was a very good introduction to the introduction of the review! The title '' Pleasures Of The Harbor'' would lead me to believe the artist was Jimmy Buffett, not Phil Ochs. By the way, I detect a dark side to Buffett's music, that Parrotheads try to ignore by consuming adult beverages. Gil Scott- Heron's lyrics have the same qualities as Och's, I wonder if Heron listened to ''Pleasures Of The Harbor''. '' Python legs are poached in slimy toad saliva. After eating that I'm lucky I'm aliva. I am, yes I am''- my favorite lyrics that contain the word, ''saliva''.

Never listened to Phil Ochs in any great detail Michael. I can see that you really know and enjoy this album. He was always listened in the folk sections of the record shops. I did not buy much folk. But anyways. Would this be his go-to album that you would recommend? Thank you M~ Rob/Boston
@michaelpdawson2 ай бұрын
Hi Rob! Yes, If you only want to hear one Phil Ochs album, this is the one I would recommend. It's definitely the one for psychedelic fans, because there is nothing else in his catalog like "The Crucifixion." Thanks for watching!

It's very impressive how you can review an album. Quite opposite of me. I'm more like uh.. This album sounds good. Uh. Then I move on. Lol kind of ironic that kangaroos are known for boxing when they have such short arms.

Hi Doug! That's why I like these deep dives...on the videos with a lot of records I worry about falling into the pattern of "Here's a record, it's great; here's another record, it's great," and so on. Thanks for watching! You're on the "roo" list.
