Knowing folkways is your favorite label figured an excellent response was forthcoming from you on dom's video..😀.. As you stated the folkways label is so vast and far reaching in not only one area but many you almost have to refine your focus. So for you to go with your longest and most passionate interest the avant garde makes sense. The incredible aesthetic that clyne gave the label is just as long lasting and fascinating as the music contained there in. People talk about the iconic status of say blue note endlessly while folkways is it's match in that regard but seems to be lesser discussed. I love kupka's work and regrettably sold my copy of Crystals during a money crunch and as of yet have not gotten back..forgot how amazing it really is while listening to it in the background. I have many of these but some I still need..luckily I see these around from time to time being in the us. But they are definitely harder to find then they once were. My own interest like you is strongly in the avant garde and ethnic so that makes up the majority of my folkways collection..with a few modern dulcimer exceptions. I just played Appleton's first flying dutchman lp along with docksteder for me at least on that lp some of the best home grown concrete music. Kinda of sad j.d Robb is not remembered as much as he should as his folkways lp's are brilliant and visionary as you so amply demonstrated in the background. At the Helm was one of the few classic so called spiritual jazz lp's that always eluded me back in the day..impossibly rare now in og form. I love bilal solo lp's like I said before. Along with nadi qamar as well.. Both pioneers in world infused jazz. Outside of laurie and Appleton when I think of synclavier nile Rodgers did so interesting stuff with it in a more pop r&b context on his 80's solo stuff..I also have a few private electronic lp's that incorporate the instruments but the titles escape me at the moment..lol. Too comment on everything would take me as long as the video..lol. So I might be back with some more reflections..oh ya never see those mimargalou folkways..I thought Atlantic did a great service when they hired him to produce and curate there finnadar label in 70's which produced some excellent avant garde lp's at least for a major label like that it was pretty bold.. The high point for me was seeing that Otashgah lp!..a true grail and rarity..your the only person I know that actually has a copy(not a surprise lol)..anyway excellent video as always brother..much love chris

Just the type of records I was hoping you'd show. Only seen a few of those in my day and a bunch of those are in my wantlist. Entourage Music Ensemble and New York East Ensemble woah! Yeah I didn't even add the original cause whats the point. The reissue is indeed tough. Love all those appleton showings and Kupka records I haven't seen. I tend to be less into the classic acousticelectric (the ping-pong sounds as you demonstrated) and more into the minimal avant-garde but the J.D. Robb appealed to me and the cover, yes! And a bit like Aphex it seems. Will have to watch again and take notes. We do see a fair amount of Folkways in this town with a history of Cornell professors holding on to avant-garde and composer LPs so I hope more comes across my desk. Unfortunately I have passed on a few of these when I was more focused on other things so we'll see what comes my way. Thank you for taking the bait! :::::))))

Ha, part of my reason to start it was specifically for you Stunty! And Chris hopefully. I certainly am not the biggest collector of Folkways but a lover of the label all the same. Consider it a nudge to see what you're holding there...brilliant so far...But my apologies for stealing your thunder!

Excellent, thanks for sharing! The JD Robb is astonishing. An 80 yr old in the 1970s?! What! I will have to investigate more. I must also look into Dariush Dolat-Shahi too. Sounds like my kind of taste. Cheers! All the best.

Christian, this is a great take on the Folkways thread. Most of my few Folkways are strictly folk, not avant-garde. You are introducing me to several new artists to search for. I did not know that there were two Doris Hays's. I have some of her recordings on the Finnadar label, where she is also identified as Sorrel Hays. I think my only album that would qualify for your video is by Ilhan Mimaroglu (Tract). I have trying to find more Philip Corner. I might have to refer to this video again. Thanks, Chris

Hey Stunty - hope you’re well. I’m curious to hear what your opinion is of the recent Seefeel redux reissues on Warp. Some are saying there are issues/glitches on the Succour record. And what about vinyl quality as a whole - there are lots of coloured special editions of vinyl releases now - is it true that black or clear will always have superior sound? Thought id seek your expert opinion.
@StuntrockConfusion3 жыл бұрын
Color isn’t an issue anymore, if pressing plant do it right, shouldn’t be any different from black, appart from metallic colors, glow in the dark, and a couple of very s Leviticus variants of green and orange iirc. Still waiting for my copies of succour and ch vox
@eelponna31453 жыл бұрын
@@StuntrockConfusion the track Monastic has a gap in it on the vinyl. Other glitches too - which is a shame. Warp are giving out partial refunds apparently.

That JD Robb, great stuff, the album as a hole sounds not completely different than what some italian experimental, abstract and soundtrack works in the beginning of 1970 like Armando Sciascia and Edmondo Giuliani. They share the same atmosphere.
@StuntrockConfusion2 жыл бұрын
I'm less familiar with Giuliani, but will investigate. My fave is Pietro Grossi

Hallo stunty in 1971 there Was one very unusual collaboration in avantgardistic/jazz/ poetry and recital with political message Released by atlantic record Made by ilhan mimoroglu and freddie hubbard in his most uncommon role. The name of the record is called sing me a Song of songmy.i Think this masterpiece is also a absolute must have.

It is, and I have it, and love it, and it has been sampled quite a few times, to the better of my knowledge, not the least by the Orb, the opening female text. I’m a Mimaroglu fanboy 😅 bought that LP many times, as present to friends

Great video, that did remind me of a Carl Craig cover too. To make music like that without a sequencer, fried my brain.

Glad someone understands the implications! Yes Carl Craig, or those early mud 90ies British Detroit techno records, Mark Broom, Black Dog, Beaumont Hannant, etc

@@StuntrockConfusion yeah I had a record shop for 10 years, mainly selling Detroit house & techno. But I love all forms of music. I was lucky enough to play with a lot of the Detroit djs.

@@Fatdogrecords oh, nice! I got a few chance as well to play with more than a few. We are blessed to not be stuck in the one paradigm though. But because I have a large library of such music, produced and released, toured, etc, you always get the disappointing assumption that that is all what you are about. And for me, most techno isn’t more electronic music than bebop, disco etc. It is dance music before being electronic music, which it often barely is, when you consider this stuff played in the video, where the project is to expand beyond traditional western composition dodécaphonismes etc.

Brilliant idea! I need more Folkways in my collection. I wish Kupka's Clouds was reissued, just available on CDr. I have Crystals as a reissue and LOVE it ! Ambient trombone! (I think Stars of the Lid drew some influence from this). Anyway, you've got me on the hunt, again. Your videos are expensive for me $$$$$. Just out of curiosity , how many records do you have and do you have them archived/ insured? Thanks!

Sorry for your wallet, but happy for your soul 😅 some other great ambient trombone is to be found with Stuart Dempster, if you don’t already know of him. I have something around 14-15000 I think, plus doubles, trades and CDs. What do you mean by archived?
