Good evening Mark and John. Great to see you back and doing another session together. So many interesting albums. Starting off with Carla Bley. I was gifted the album from 1979 called Musique Mecanique. The song '404' is fantastic. I am going to take your word on that and check it out. I have seen the Charles Lloyd 'Love-In' album shown quite a few times in the VC. Do you remember when Blake was selling copies of 'Forest Flower' from 1967? He has had a massive career. I was surprised when I found out that he played on both Beach Boys albums 'Surf's Up' and 'Holland'. I agree. It is great that he is still with us. >< Enjoyed hearing you both talk about Hendrix. Another superb sessions gents. A top way to kick off some Saturday evening VC viewing. Enjoy the rest of the weekend~ Rob/Boston

Thanks Rob. Musique Mecanique is another great Carla record. Also like the song Jesus Maria off that one. I think Charles Lloyd's playing is getting better with age. He sure doesn't sound like an 85 year old on his most recent stuff

Always a joy to get your response to a new video Rob - I will check out 404 - thank you. I don't remember Blake selling copies of Forest Flower - must have been just before we got involved here? I didn't know about the Beach Boys/Lloyd collaboration - thank you!

So fab to see you both again. Hope the covid situation had improved. Great showings. I played the Pharoah Sanders record for the first time today on the way to work! Harvest Time is gorgeous. I need to find a copy. I've been tempted by the Marcia Griffiths 45 but those 45s are creeping up a bit. I will hunt one down. Another cover I love is Dawn Penn's Are You There With Another Girl. It should not work but does. A dub siren! I play little sessions at home and I've been tempted for a while. It might well push my neighbours over the edge. I agree about the VC - good videos are hard to find. I watched one about cleaning stains on record covers - it was a lot better than it sounds. All the best to both of you. Steve.

Hi Steve - great to hear from you. I picked up the Marcia Griffiths from Dub Vendor last week - there might still be a copy or two there...I don't think you will regret your dub siren - an essential purchase I would have thought! Listening to the Dawn Penn as I write this - lovely stuff - thank you

Nice to see you guys! I swear I have that shirley brown somewhere, lost in a shelf. I need to revisit this. Nice records, too much to mention... this is a JB favorite of mine in his catalogue. Cheers!

Cheers Chris - good to hear from you - fabulous JB's music which sits nicely alongside the In a Jungle Groove comp too...

So great to see a new video from you both - always fun. I wasn't aware of Blake Mills, so I gave Jelly Road a sample on youtube and it sounded great - ordered the vinyl. Jeff's Blow by Blow and Wired albums are him at the top of his game, but the Jeff Beck Group albums are great too. Always a pleasure to see a new video from you guys - take care fellas. Bill

Cheers Bill and very glad to have turned you on to Blake Mills. The album he released with Pino Paladin (Notes with Attachments) is also really worth a listen and is taking the whole jazz fusion concept forward into interesting new sonic spaces...
@coolbluetoo10 ай бұрын
I actually have that Notes With Attachments album, forgetting completely that Blake is on it. (forgetting things is a whole new hobby for me in my advancing age, unfortunately.) You are right though, a great album. I really like MeShell's new album - it would have been great to hear your thoughts on her recent live performance that you were lucky enough to attend. I hope I get to see her at some point - I'm a long time fan that has yet to see her. Take care fellas - keep the video's coming - you guys are missed! Bill @@drrhythmn

Hi guys, lovely to see you back, an oasis in a sea of shootout and cleaning videos! Saw Wilco a few weeks ago on the Edinburgh leg of their tour, they were on stellar form. Will look up that Gabor doc on KZbin tonight, I’m a big fan of his sound too - are either of you familiar with his late 70s record Belsta River? Also lovely to see you share that Carla Bley record after the sad news of her passing yesterday. A decent effort an unboxing John, we were just missing a special over-engineered blade to remove the shrink... Be well, hopefully not too soon until the next one. Jamie

Great to see you gents back even if apart. Glad I got that Pharoah OG before it got bonkers in price. Was pleased to see that box set released. Was long overdue for a non bootleg. Peace.

I'm tempted to get a dub siren for my bike when I go to work; that would clear the way! I really like the sound of kimiko kasai with the headhunters, so I'll look out for that. I love some shirley brown too, and if she's doing an answer record with monologue, it must be worth a listen. Great stuff as always, thanks
@omniversal710 ай бұрын
Hi Laurence - There's definitely some monologuing (if that's a word) on the Shirley Brown ... Dub sirens all round I think!
@drrhythmn10 ай бұрын
The Dub Siren can be powered with a battery so would be feasible to strap on to your bike! Check out the Kimiko Kasai version of Use Me, I think you will like it!

@drrhythmn I will check it out. I went to a record fair this morning and found the butterfly album, so thanks for the tip

Always enjoyable watching your selections. Gabor Szabo lived in the SF Bay Area for years and I saw him numerous times playing clubs. A very soothing style and yes, that jazzy raga mix was a big part. I always grab his records when I come across them. Cheers ✌🏼

Hello John and Mark, long time no see! Charles Lloyd's duet with Jason Moran, ''Hagar's Song'' is an unknown gem from 2012 on ECM. They cover Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson as well as Duke Ellington and others, and also some Lloyd originals. Jeff Becks' albums ''Blow By Blow'' and ''Wired'', to me, are the twin peaks of his career. Although, his first album also rates extremely high, it ''out-zeppelins'' the Led Zeppelin blues sound. The secret weapon on ''Wired'' is Wilbur Bascomb on bass. He played with guys that you mention in this video, James Brown, Roy Ayers and Alphonzo Mouzon. James Brown's two compilations, ''In The Jungle Groove'' and ''Motherlode'', compiled lovingly by British music writer, Cliff White, are always in active rotation in my home. I bought them when they first came out in the 1980's and bought the deluxe versions that came out in the 2000's. The two drummers, Clyde and Jabo overshadow the ''other'' great drummer, Melvin Parker. James Brown claims that Parker was his favorite drummer. Listen to the extended version of ''Can I Get Some Help'' from ''Motherlode'' and you will agree! Yes, Melvin is Maceo Parker's brother. The Gladiators ''Full Time'' album from the 1980's on the Nighthawk label is a real good one. I wish Jerry Garcia performed a duo concert recording with Derek Bailey. God bless Carla Bley, her music puts a smile on my face!
@omniversal710 ай бұрын
Hi Michael. I really like Hagar's Song too. Lloyd's ECM records are mostly excellent and there's a lot of them! Derek + Garcia would have been something. The mind boggles. He definitely knew about the Grateful Dead. They featured in the TV series based on his Improvisation book.

Thank you for the info on Wilbur Michael - I agree with you about the In a Jungle Groove comp too - pure funky class! Didn't know Melvin was Maceo's brother and will check out the extended version of 'Can I get some Help' and the Gladiators Full Time - thank you for sharing!

My all time favourites are back! Always a pleasure to hear your educated ramblings on music. I agree with your sentiment when you say there aren't many VC videos worth watching. There just aren't many good videos, it's a fact, so when I saw yours pop up, I was very happy because I knew some interesting records would be discussed. Nice selections from Blake Mills, Wilco, Gabor Szabo, Traffic, Eric Dolphy, Joni Mitchell, Carla Bley...a superb mix as per usual. I love classical music, especially Debussy. La Mer is a tremendous piece indeed. Debussy's influence is also strong on ambient music. I think you can draw a line between Debussy's impressionistic piano preludes and Eno's 70's Ambient works. That Pharoah is killer, but that box is a bit wasteful imho. I'll keep my bootleg which sounds fine (some would beg to differ but to me it's perfectly fine).

Hi Fred - thank you for the good vibes and of course for flying the OG VC flag high and with quality - loving your classical selections too
