Hmm. Something that has always stood out for me in these Virtua Fighter videos is the physics of certain things. Watch Lau and Pai round and look at there hair on the Saturn version. Their "tails" actually move and animate well. Not to mention I forgot you can knock Pai's hat off. The 32X version they the hair stays ridged but that is to be expected with the hardware.

The 32X port's graphics are more basic, but it doesn't have the weird glitchy polygons like the Saturn port does. It also has widescreen which was not a common thing back then.

My analysis.. Graphically, the 32X is more stable so I could say it's better than Saturn. No flickering on the floor or characters.. But glitchy graphics aside the models are more detailed on Saturn, maybe even double or more on the polygon count. Even with those details missing the 32X still retains the arcade soul, and since there's no flickering or polygon popping It's overall nicer on the eyes than Saturn. Sound wise the music is richer on Saturn without the need to incorporate the old FM synth. And redbook audio 💿 puts no limits on drum samples. But sound effects are close to equal, as the 32X has decent sample playback like Saturn. If the music were turned off they'd likely be hard to tell apart sound wise. I like the arcade music the best. Both Saturn and 32X use the remixed versions.

Thank you for another excellent video. I love your channel. The only advantages of the 32X version are the addition of a Tournament Mode and the absence of loading times. On the other hand, the Saturn version surpasses it in everything else, with all its flaws; Polygon count, textures, music quality, better lightning, characters' shadows, etc. However, neither version has a real floor on which the ring is supposedly located... That always produces a strange feeling.

Still can't believe the Saturn version has trouble even rendering the ARENA... Great game but (graphically) a hammer blow to Saturn's first impression on launch. Remix and VF2 showed what Saturn could do.
@dreamsthatgotogether755311 күн бұрын
Ya that was deeply unfortunate. However Sarah’s music and the overall awesomeness of the game override what I consider to be a negligible amount of clipping.
@Lightblue222211 күн бұрын
Remix doesn't have the technical light shading like the original here. Like on Sarah's stage the light comes from below, reflecting onto the characters.

it was just a matter of using VDP2 to render the arena even more so with the low detail and low color arenas of this game in particular. They learned their lesson later.

32X wins. 32X is lower fidelity, particularly in polygon count and music, and also most other visual aspects. However; The polygons on 32X, though much reduced, are far more stable. On Saturn, there is an egregious amount of Z-fighting (polygon layering going wrong, polys appearing in the wrong order) in a way that wasn't present on the arcade version. I give the win to 32X, since it's a great port, pushes the hardware to actually achieve Virtua Fighter, reduced in visual/audio fidelity only. The gameplay is there. On Saturn, the gameplay is also there, but it's a rushed port that could have been a lot better.

The Saturn version needed a few more weeks of development time to sort out the glitches. Even so, it has a much higher polygon count, it runs at a more stable frame rate, has a much higher horizontal resolution and a higher colour depth, to say nothing of the sound effects quality... which is just as well given it cost more than twice that of the 32X. Does the 32X port do more with the hardware? Yep. Is the Saturn port lacking? A little. Is the Saturn port a bad game? Definitely not.

Sega should've never released the Saturn and this is more proof. All they had to do was make a 32X for people who already had a Genesis, and have a standalone 32X for people who didn't, then drastically reduce the price of the Sega CD so 32-Bit CD games would be more accessible to 32X owners, then ride this MF out until the Dreamcast was ready. Rushing the 32X and not having a long-term plan for it, and then rushing out the Saturn was the beginning of the end for Sega.

32x had widescreen option
@vcdecide11 күн бұрын
@amirprog To show that the 32X has widescreen while the Saturn version does not… However, the real point here is that we are talking about a widescreen game released long before the format became popular in the gaming world with the Xbox 360 and PS3. After all, we’re talking about a game from 1995. That said, back in 1992, Virtua Racing Deluxe in its arcade version already featured a widescreen display. It's worth noting that Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter are part of the Virtua series, which also includes other games like Virtua Tennis, Virtua Cop, and more. Ultimately, the goal of this video is to highlight the importance and innovations of the Virtua series for the gaming world. This series is known as the father of 3D fighting games, the father of the PlayStation, the father of Lara Croft/Tomb Raider, the father of Tekken, the father of Dead or Alive, the father of camera innovations in racing games, and the father of many other things. So, do I really need to say more about why I chose to highlight something so uncommon for a 1994 game on the 32X? My videos are not about determining the best or worst version, but about showcasing the unique and common aspects of different versions. A unique point here is the fact that the 32X version has widescreen support, while the Sega Saturn version does not.
