Smart of them to make two separate versions. All to often the GG would get unoptimized quick-and-dirty ports that weren't altered to take the small screen into account.

That was the bane of the home computer market in Europe in the 80s. Most Amstrad CPC games were just shoddy ports of the ZX Spectrum version becasue they shared the same CPU so it was easy just to run the same game on both systems.

Great comparison of the two 8-bit versions of one of my favorite games of all time! 😀 For sure, the Game Gear version is the preferred 8-bit rendition of SoR2. The colors are more vibrant, “thanks” to the lower resolution, the characters appear roughly 30% bigger and there are even a few minor animations in the background to make the stages seem more alive (basically just lights flashing up, but still, fair enough). And I counted 3 vs 2 enemies on screen, which is a huge step-up gameplaywise. 2P mode is an instant win, and the fact that the Game Gear pushes 5 characters on screen with both players and three enemies is the nail in the coffin for the 3 sprites only engine of the SMS. 🤓

This is so funny, Sega Master system is so stubborn, they managed to make street of rage and even the same track but...in 8 bit

the result of the music is not so bad(the sound chipset is very bad). yuzo koshiro made a good conversion of his music.

@@SomeOrangeCat The soundchip is a cheap clone of the General Instrument AY-3-8910. It's too bad Sega didn't work with Yamaha to make a VDP with a built-in YMF2149, which was a superior clone of the 8910.

The Master System version seems to only run at 30fps (The GG versions runs at 60) and it also looks less colorful than the GG version. Only disadvantage I see on GG is the lower resolution.

The master system had a 64-color palette, and the game gear had a 4,096 color palette.

I had finished it in hard with all the characters, it was super difficult. At the time, being able to have Streets of Rage 2 on the Master system was something incredible. And the music is cool.

The Game Gear version has some pretty sexy colors compared to its Master System counterpart. It just has a smaller screen resolution, but better AI.

Esses jogos não são iguais porque foram feitos por empresas diferentes, duas subsidiárias da Sega! A versão do GG ficou melhor, pois segue fiel a versão do Mega, já versão do SMS tem estágios deferentes e só ganha nos gráficos que são um pouco mais nítido e por mostrar o life de todos os inimigos. O SR2 do SMS poderia ser perfeito se fosse igual do GG, mas no lugar de 2 jogadores e 3 inimigos simultâneos na tela, colocaria Max e teria gráficos melhores!

O Game Gear era um belo portátil na época,mas precisava de uma atualização uma versão Slim e que tivesse o consumo de pilhas reduzido,quando a Sega passou pra Majesco os direitos de vender o Game Gear a Majesco fez algo muito interessante diminuiu um pouco o consumo de pilhas e no Genesis 2 colocou um chip da Sony deixando o Genesis 2 com uma imagem incrível só no som pecou um pouco mas era muito próximo do primeiro modelo,sobre o video o port do Game Gear ganha em praticamente tudo.

Game Gear has 12bit colour and Master System only 6bit so colour in nicer on Game Gear. But Master System has more resolution so play field s larger. Also it has some parallax scrolling so Master System wins but Game Gear seems to have smoother animation.

Game Gear wins this one. Better graphics, better animations, and much more balanced enemy AI. I especially have a problem with the Y. Signals on the master system version because they slide kick me into a corner and then they keep spamming that move until I’m dead. Also, isn’t it weird that the master system version is missing the 2 player mode while the game gear version retains the two player mode? If anything, you’d expect it to be the other way around.

I tend to think the Master System versions of the first and second game were nerfed on purpose by Sega, probably to spend less money on them, in terms of the 2 player gameplay absent in both while the Game Gear versions of the two games have it (and it's pretty difficult to enjoy them because of requiring theLink Cable). In the first Streets of Rage game for the Master System is understable they didn't aim for 2 players and target a maximum of two enemies on screen because of the much larger character sprites of the Master System version compared to the Game Gear version. But regarding the Master System version of the second game, which pretty much uses the same or very similar sized characters? Lazyness and cheapness mind you. Plus, it plays like some sort of prototype with a very weid and abusive enemy IA, compare to the one of the Game Gear which is much more similar to the Mega Drive's.

Better resolution but lower colours on the master system. That version wouldn't fit well on the Game Gear screen. And the Game Gear resolution would be too low for a TV game. So Game Gear better colours, Master System higher resolution for TV. So everything had to be redrawn

In fact each one was made by a subsidiary of SEGA. SMS SR2 could be perfect if it was the same as GG, but instead of 2 players and 3 simultaneous enemies on the screen, it would put Max and have better graphics!

Não acho que o Streets of rage 1 de Mega tenha gráficos inferiores ao Final Fight. Considero estilos gráficos diferentes, ele podia ter sprites menores, mas prefiro muito mais a paleta de cores do game, detalhes dos cenários, jogabilidade e música do Street of Rage.
