The best tool platform is the one you use to be able to get the job done. I've used Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Flex and loved the ones that did not give me headaches. For example I burned through two Makita grinders before going with Dewalt, but found the Makita drills unbelievable performers that I can drop from a roof and still know they will work. So, whatever does the job is my favorite. That's just me.

How I feel with my Porter Cable drill. Left it in pouring rain overnight (twice) and after letting it dry out and sitting in water it runs great 2 years later. Still miss the tools of yesterday. Steel, long lasting and built in USA. 👍

Even good companies sometimes have bad products now and then too. I haven't had any issues with the couple of Makita tools I have though.

Love your videos! I use Makita platform and so far my on the job experience, nothing else holds up. Hot, cold, wet , dry, mud, drops, dust, you name it, all the others doesn't stack up. That said, I believe that your top 5 is solid. I did just get the M18 table saw and it is awesome! The packout system is also very cool!!!!!

Personally my go to tools are BOSCH and Makita, profactor tools from bosch have made me huge fan! I own milwaukee, dewalt, metabo hpt, craftsman and skil for some things too but always seem to find Bosch and Makita in my hands

Dewalt is the most innovative brand in the industry in my opinion. They were the first to create a multi-platform battery ranging from 20v-120v while keeping all the batteries interchangeable. They were also the first to patent a new battery cell technology called "powerstack". The new cells are a giant leap forward for the cordless tool industry. Though, I will say, some of my hand tools, bits, and sds bits are Milwaukee. They also make high quality tools. I especially like the fact that their sds bits are made in Germany.

I agree with your list. I have the FLEX combo kit but sold the lower end impact that it came with and upgraded to the top end impact driver and I have loved it all. So many good tool brands out there. Truly they all work. This is why we pick Metabo HPT. We just wanted to stay in one battery platform. MultiVolt AC adapter, which allows any of our cordless tools to also be run corded for all day. From framing, roofing, siding to finish and any specialty in between, and to cordless nailers feel like your pneumatic. The new 36V MultiVolt 7-1/4 Inch Rear Handle Circular Saw weight only 8.2 lbs. Only 8.2 lbs. awesome. Vince great topic.

@@sarjxxx HPT question I bought a used set of 7 tools for just $70. The issue I’m having is finding genuine Hitachi / Metabo batteries 18V the type that have a column that inserts in the tool. All I can find are Chinese knock offs with poor reviews. Any ideas? Thanks

Just recently got back into the trades as a residential electrician and purchased the Kobalt XTR line five-piece kit and have been so impressed. I also have the Kobalt 24v one-handed Sawzall, multi-tool and 3-gallon vac. My buddies at work would poke fun at my Kobalt line of tools until I put them up against their dewalt's and smoked them in several different tasks.

@@runryerun8789 I would just stick with their multivolt tools that take advantage of the 36v with some exceptions. The best example is the 36v reciprocating saw. It’s huge and bulky but it’s fun to use.

I've had to of there 4ah 36v batteries die on me. I'm pretty sure the cold did it, how do you have a tool platform aim at pros and the batteries die in the cold. All the way dead like purple blinky lights on the charger dead. I guess there nice if you live in Florida.

It’s 2024 and I’m Flex all the way! I’ve the driver, the hammer drill, the oscillating tool and my latest purchase the router and plunge adapter- love them all! Batteries charge quickly and retain the charge forever! Can’t see myself changing platforms anytime soon.

Hilti - Reason being their Tool Park Management Service saves you a fortune of money on your multiple jobsites & also the one platform Nuron helps you optimize your tool park. Productivity, Performance, Health & Safety along with Sustainability offered. 2. Flex - The soul reason being their performance & nothing else. They still fall short of providing service as compared to competition. 3. Milwaukee - Reason being they fail to achieve one platform for all their tools hence increasing the number of tools per jobsite. But still better than a lot of competition. 4. I’ve seen no innovation from dewalt. And this from someone who has ONLY dewalt tools and somewhere between 10-20k of them. I’m disappointed. A smaller impact and smaller battery? I have it… hardly innovative. It wasn’t a problem that needed solving for me. Give me an industry leading battery vacuum. Give me a a completed tough system. Tough system two is no different than the first one and yet the drawers still fall apart in no time.

I agree with you, the DeWalt vacuum sucks, no pun intended, but how many people in the grand scheme of things need a cordless vac enough to lay down the shekels for one? I do like those that can be used as a dust collection system, but vacuum cleaners are hard on batteries, so not that great an option, IMO.

As a homeowner/DIYer/hobby auto mechanic I love Milwaukee M12 Fuel tools. M18 is good too, and I have a few, but M12 has always done everything I've tried it on.

If you're a plumber or auto mechanic then yes, but they don't offer everything by any stretch. Cordless biscuit joiner, track saw, fence stapler, roofing gun, quad charger/generator, etc. Not only that, but their first gen cordless nailers were horrible, their cordless miter saws are known for inaccuracy, their cordless router is weaker than ryobi, their cordless table saw has bad reviews, etc. No single tool line offers everything a versatile tradesman needs. Don't get me wrong, I own probably 2 dozen M12 tools, all my lights are M18 because they can also plug in, and I have the 9" grinder, chainsaw, and blower, but still, they don't complete a set. Also, my worst ever experience with tools for over a decade is, ironically, the most I've ever spent. M18 fuel impact glitches forward/reverse after changes, M18 fuel sawzall wouldn't hold blades after 3 months, M18 fuel hammerdrill chuck is completely locked up. Very disappointed. Never had any of those problems with makita or dewalt, even bottom line brushed tools.

I think it greatly depends on what you do. If you're an electrician/plumber, milwaukee is a no brainer. For us framers id say metabo hpt or dewalt, leaning towards metabo hpt. Best pneumatic and battery nailguns, amazing recip saw/impact/hammer drill, and their new rear handle is amazing.

I'm a professional Timberframer and tool addict largely using Makita, Dewalt, Hilti and Milwaukee. I agree that some brands do specific tools better than others. I prefer fit and finish and have to say Makita does power planers beautifully. The only manufacturer I know that makes the monster 12" beam planer and curved shoe. Makitas fit and finish on their xgt 3"1/4 planer is far better than anything I've used. Feels smooth and tight. Makes Dewalts 3 1/4 feel like a fisherprice toy. That being said, Dewalt's flexvolt battery line can outperform in power and I have mostly flexvolt. Although, I'm leaning towards Makita for how smooth and precise their tools feel. Milwaukee's cordless impacts are unbeatable imo. Hilti all the way for rockchippers. Anyhoo, just my two cents

I worked in custom cabinetry for 14 years. We used Makita, they never failed. Had 2 DeWalt drills that were trash. They wouldn't hold their charge. Bosch came out with lithium battery and smaller drills. They seemed okay

I bought one from Lowes two months ago, the drill fell of my bench 2 feet and the plastic slivers that hold the battery on broke on both sides. Lowes said sorry no help and Metabo said warranty doesnt cover it. Lol...yeah sticking with Makita. Shame, since that Triple Hammer is fire.

I agree Flex is 100% the brand to keep an eye on, but still feel that if you are a professional outfitting a business currently, you still need a wide selection to choose from. Those brands are still Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita. Hilti has selection, just no real store presence.

I've never seen anyone compare WORX tools with other brands... I just bought into their cordless pressure washer, shop vac, and blower. They make the strongest most versatile cordless pressure washer in my eyes the first of its kind. So far so good for my business 🤷🏾‍♂️

Anyone can come up with a top 5 in any order, but I would have to disagree with putting Makita at 5 behind the others, just reading thru the comments makita would be at least #3

I am keeping a close eye on Skil, Makita, and Milwaukee. I don’t disagree with your top 5 but I would add Skil. Thanks to your cinematic documentation, I am keeping a close eye on Skil. I am in the Makita LXT platform and I have a single Milwaukee impact driver in the pack out case with 2 CP 3.0 batteries ( so far the best battery I have used). I really like Makita for vibration mitigation.

I have a general rule: Bosch is #1 and on a bad day #2 or #3. For Similar money Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee. There are other good picks but they have a limited line or are of a higher price point. Bosch is never a bad choice and always one of the best, no matter what.

I currently own Bosch, Milwaukee and have also owned DeWalt, Craftsman and Ryobi in the past. None of them can hold a candle to Bosch when it comes to build quality and tool control/finesse. Makita may be up there as well but I have never owned their tools to compare. The problem with Bosch is their not-so-great commitment to North America. Their lineup was improved last year with the addition of PROFACTOR (whose tools are a beast and can get you corded levels of power on a single 18V battery) but they're still missing some critical tools like right angle impact drivers, right angle impact wrenches, cordless ratchets and nailers to name a few. I'd still rank them at #5, though. Flex doesn't get my attention yet with also a limited lineup and still unofficial announcement from their stacked cell batteries.

I have Bosch, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Dewalt, Kobalt. Some are newer tools and some are older tools. I use the Bosch and Milwaukee a lot and have had good luck with them. I have some of the Ridgid tools that I use often and they work well. Most tools today are good quality and if one is watchful, they can snab some good tools at great prices. There is a home depot and menards near me but lowes is over an hour away so tool selection can boil down to what is conveniently available in your area.

I would like a video on inverters. Seems like only a select number of companies are offering them with their batteries (Milwalkee, Roybi, Ego and Greenworks). I wonder what companies would join the list especially those that have invested a lot recently in their battery platform like Dewalt, Flex and Hilti. Having inverters are great for power outages, use less wires and increase the value of buying a battery platform.

Milwaukee makes the best plumbing/auto mechanic tools, milwaukee makes a great M12 3/8 stapler, dewalt had the first reasonably priced cordless 7 1/4" miter saw, dewalt had the first solid battery only finish/framing nailers, dewalt has the first solid cordless roofing gun(bostich tried) dewalt had the first cordless table saw, dewalt had the first cable stapler and fence stapler, dewalt had the first and still kind of the only 20/60v battery powered generator/charger, makita makes the only cordless biscuit joiner, makita makes the only cooler/heater, etc. Point is, if you think one tool line fits all, you're not in a versatile industry, you're in a specialized industry. Those of us that do it all understand that you need to own all different tool lines. No single tool line owns it all.

@@runryerun8789 Ya my buddy is a union plumber that leads a couple hundred guys for a company with a few thousand guys which is what got me started on some M18 tools. He gave me a bunch of 9.0 and 5.0 batteries so all my lights are M18 and I have the chainsaw, 9" grinder, and blower. I had really bad luck with the M18 fuel hammerdrill, impact, and sawzall though. Hammerdrill chuck locked up, sawzall won't change blades, and impact gun glitches forward/reverse for a few trigger pumps after changing. All happened in less than 6 months. $450 gathering dust. Never had a problem with my makitas or dewalts. I love my M12 stuff but the tripod light piston failed after a month so I returned it, the collet in the fuel impact is messed up after only 6 months, and the hammerdrill doesn't have much power, even for a 12v. I like the jigsaw, hackzall, right angle drill has a ton of power for a 12v, the fuel multi tool is a monster, and the magnetic roving light is pretty slick. I'd love an M12 pro press but I can't quite justify the money lol. The copper cutter is sweet too. I totally understand why plumbers go for milwaukee. I absolutely would too. It's honestly necessary. Same for auto mechanics. M12 and M18 own those industries.

@@runryerun8789 I work for a Union Pipefitting company that specializes in Commercial and Industrial. We use ONLY DeWalt. The reason is that they have power tools made in the US, and the tools that are not use the same batteries that the US made tools use. That is it. My Union prioritizes American made and Union made tools and part first, but they have to not lack in quality. We also work many jobs where you HAVE to (per contract) use only US made tools and parts.

Hi Vince, great video and passion as always! I am not a contractor, just a DIY tool enthusiast. See below as I would rank the tool platforms : 1- Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Dewalt, Hilti. I am impressed with Flex however they have entered the tool market a few years too late in my opinion. Additionally, I don't think of Lowes as a heavy contractor business compared to Home Depot. Flex tools seem a bit expensive and feel heavy. I am impressed with the battery technology and like the parent company as I own Ego branded equipment. Flex may need another source or distributor to really get the sales the company probably needs to see. I was glad to see Ridgid was not on your list. I tried a few tools and the LSA is a scam and the tools are overpriced and underperformed. Ryobi seems like a better deal. Depot should dump Ridigid and get Flex in their stores !Lastly, I know people may not agree with Bosch however they are great tools and have terrific build quality as they are German engineered and utilize a newer battery technology. @@pheloniousmunk the Bosch batteries are fantastic. I run the 4mAh and they hold a charge fir a long time. I picked up a few with the last promotion at Lowes. They also have an 8 and a 12mah. Very well built with cooling fans and a battery light meter.

I'm a Bosch and Milwaukee user. I used to have 1.5Ah and 2Ah Bosch slim packs but right now I only run 4Ah CORE batteries with 21700 cells. Bosch was one of the first companies to switch to 21700 cells and the 4Ah battery is about as compact and light as the 2Ah batteries I used to own. I like how the battery has 5 LED indicators unlike most other companies with 3 or 4. It makes you more aware about how much battery is left. My batteries have been great, 2 of them are 2 yrs old and the other one is almost 3 yrs old. They work just like when they were new.

I went with Ryobi for years because that was what I could afford. Now that I make good money and am debt free I am replacing my Ryobi with better stuff. Started with Dewalt, but have become a Flex guy 100%. The recip saw is no joke. The circular saw is smooth, powerful, and accurate. I now have the entire line. I can't wait for their next platform. Hoping for a wet saw, miter saw, table saw, or yard platfrom.

Pretty much my thoughts. At this time it's just vaporware and that's no reason to choose anything as a #1. Kick Flex out of the top 5, move everything else 1 position up and add Bosch or Metabo HPT Multivolt to #5.

I've been in the trades since 1987 - I mainly do high end custom furniture of my own design and smaller unique home improvements, mainly built-in projects. Back in the '90's I was also in the film production world designing and building theater sets then film and TV sets - Back then I tried every cordless system available and Makita tended to be top-dog. (I still have and use my 7-1/4" Makita corded circular saw I bought in '87) - Once I got to more shop work I stepped down to the 12 volt Bosch system not needing the large/heavy cordless tools.... Now I'm in a completely different world where I'm building out my 4x4 Astro van into a capable overlanding rig and taking on projects all over the country and I really need to get into a complete cordless system (which is why I find myself here) - I was aware how awesome the FLEX system preforms and want to pull the trigger BUT their lack of tools is what's keeping me from going that route - I'm considering MIlwaukee because they have EVERYTHING including a chainsaw which will come in real handy out in the bush. If I knew for sure FLEX was coming out with that I'd just go with them. I also have a burgeoning KZbin channel and was looking at possibly seeing if any of these companies might want to sponsor me as their tools will get plenty of play on the channel. I dont know, but i feel that Flex as #1 is a massive what if. As it stands right now, with personal experience with all these tool brands, in my opinion, Milwaukee beats out the rest by a long shot. They have an incredibly expansive lineup in the m18 platform, with a very good "sidekick" m12 platform. I understand the issues with the mx fuel line, but i doubt Flex will come out with huge breaking hammers (like the mx fuel or hilti) anytime soon. Milwaukee is expensive, but not unattainable. The availability is excellent for most tools, and the warranty is pretty standard across the market. So until something revoltionary comes from another brand, im sticking with Milwaukee

I would pick Milwaukee as number 1 and I was mostly a DeWalt guy for years. Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita all have a wide range of high performing/high quality tools available....no promises that they're going to develop something in the future, they're already doing it. I think that across the board, Milwaukee is proving their slightly better quality(than DeWalt) on thousands of jobsites every day, and I have to admit that Milwaukee has some great tools in the M12 lineup. Flex, Kobalt, Rigid, Ryobi, and Bosch aren't even on my radar....I'm already invested in the Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita battery platforms and the tools have proven their quality and performance. I think Metabo HPT is a brand that people should be watching if they're gonna go off into the weeds on other battery platforms.

I have always been a milwaukee guy. Their corded tools simply ran forever and the M18 platform has served me very well. At least until the last two tools I purchased. I purchased a new impact driver and a drill. Both have so much runout that they are basically unusable. I think Milwaukee has put cost and profits over quality and for the first time, I'm probably going to switch platforms.

Flex volt advantage tools are unbeatable with the combined power and run time. And if you want a compact they have atomics combined with power stacks. So go big with FVA or go small with powerstack atomics. The middle of the road XRs do get beat by Milwaukees 🤷‍♂️

1st place doesn't make sense since this flex platform only exists in usa and here we talk about brands which are available world wide. Based on units sold worldwide and the availability of the brands the top 5-6 in no particular order is Makita DeWalt Milwaukee Bosh Metabo Hikoki (MetaboHPT) followed by Hilti Festool which are usually considered premium choices for concrete (hilti) and wood working (festool) like metabo used to be in metal working and they still have some premium tools for metal working. Also these days at least in Europe i don't know about USA is another german brand which makes premium wood tools Mafell and they are on the same battery platform like Metabo they are part of CAS (Cordless Alliance System) and they use basically metabo LiHD batteries. Bosch also has launched AMP Share which is a new battery alliance which is based on bosh pro core batteries one popular brand joining is Fein

Many of the others brands are reminding me of major tech companies instead of tool companies with their constant releases with little improvement over last gen. I have to many different batteries. I started getting Ryobi because they're more affordable and they offer pretty much anything you can think of. Then I started getting milwaukee 12v stuff because it was so compact and strong but then I got a couple good deals on Dewalt stuff so now I have 3 Dewalt power tools and I think I might just stick with Dewalt now lol

I bought the Makita lxt about 5 years ago. And I will say from personal experience that the top of the line Makita impact driver has been the best one driving screws and lag bolts faster than Milwaukee and dewalt. I have personally tested until recently with dewalt's new power stack. However if not tried the 40 volt which I will be investing in next. Also the 36 volt sawzall cuts faster than a chainsaw through burnt roofs and the oscillating tool however not brushless also is the best. Maybe not the most ergonomic but cuts the fastest. I agree Makita does not come out with new updates but my theory is they wait for Milwaukee hilty and DeWalt to keep wasting their resources on things like powerstack and 60 volt so that they can totally dominate them with their 80-volt lineup. Seems like they did that I guess I'll have to have a Hands-On review when I actually get to use them. But I stick with Makita Ben a Makita guy since I was 12 when they had their 9 volt system

Makita is the Toyota of the cordless tools: they wait on the competition to use resources on new tools every 2-3 years, fix what's wrong with them then release a reliable, more ergonomic and smoother tool. The only gripe I have with Makita is they haven't transitioned to 21700 cells for their 18V batteries. They're bulky, heavy and make me feel like Makita is planning to phase out 18V tools in favor of 40V tools in the near future. Just look at their recent releases: they're mostly 40V tools.

Great video! If I was a contractor, or a jobsite worker, I would 100% agree with this list! But as a woodworker/furniture builder, most of these brands are not as ideal. My list would be: 5. Milwaukee, 4. Craftsman, 3. Skil, 2. Makita, 1. Dewalt. Well, actually Dewalt and makita are tied. Personally, Milwaukee has too much power and not enough controllability for me, and not enough runtime. Skil and Craftsman are great, as they’re cheap, and very high quality. Makita is great, and would be my favorite, but they’re more expensive than Dewalt. Great video outlining which brands are great for the out in the trades!

I don't get why Milwaukee is getting a bit of push back now for having different battery platforms but everyone ignores that that dewalt and makita have lots of different battery platforms that are not interchangeable. Milwaukee's platforms are pretty well delineated. MX for site equipment, M18 for most things, M12 for small stuff. The twin battery systems are an outlier BUT they do allow you to run new higher capacity tools on your existing M18 batteries - meaning they are more backwards compatible than any of the other companies. I really appreciate the fact that Milwaukee has gotten so much out of M18 and has continued to do so even when others have gone 36V, 40V, 80V etc etc.

FLEX for large tools, Milwaukee and Bosch for 12v tools The M12 lineup is like non-other but with that said for pure accuracy and precision Bosch has better control on the 12v drivers no competition. One more thing, the Dewalt DCF840 paired with a power stack is lighter and more powerful than my M12 impact with a 6.0 Lots of great tools coming out just wait and give it some time because the battery platforms are advancing quickly and tools are gaining more power

I've just bought the 3" cutoff tool and has been good for me, but then I'm a DIYer/car enthusiast. Although I agree a 4 1/2 grinder would be cool, I'm not sure 12V batteries are enough to power it . And the runtime would be presumably low even with a 6Ah XC. Maybe that's why no other company has dared to introduce 12V grinders?
