I remember my grandmother talking about those times and what it was like in London especially during the blitz. . She was 19 and lived through it every day and night My grandfather her husband was fighting in the North Africa desert, up through Sicily, onto mainland Italy into Germany, through Austria. He fought alongside Aussies, kiwi's, Indians, Polish troops etc. It was a hard slog. It was continuous fighting to the end. The wartime generation were dutifull and tough..

Great video Jack and to think that the future Queen and her sister were in that crowd somewhere. When I cam to the UK from Dublin in 1960, I was amazed to still see murals and writing about the war on gable ends. Of course , we knew little of it in the Republic. A lot of the art work stayed up to the very early 70s. Some was simple messages painted on houses welcoming troop home. Others were mor elaborate showing the Union Flag, pictures of the King and Queen or similar. One depicted a native American Chief in full headdress. It was reputedly drank by a GI. It lasted until the mid 70s.
