Superb presentation. To get around re-using the original "stretch" bolts , I torqued them to a significant torque but used Loctite and witness marks on the nuts, three years later still haven't moved.

Thanks so much for making it look so easy and very well explained, great job.👍 Also have you done a video on how to replace the back struts? because I would be very interested in seeing that. Only thing is mine is a wagon not a sedan so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. Andre

I have original STD VE shocks beware of the coil spring load when releasing doing this procedure. Thanks for sharing 👍 (Edit) I just realised I undone both top strut nuts and is why my coil spring pushed down and unable to release the strut freely. Duh 🙄

Fantastic video, would you recommend getting a wheel alignment after replacing struts
@lollytheman3 жыл бұрын
100% you’ll need a wheel alignment any time you change struts of springs as it puts out the degree of the alignment. You’ll either have a toe in ( front of tyres pointing inwards) or a toe out( tyres pointing outwards). Most of the time you can’t see it as it’s very minimal but it will wear out your tyres quicker. Also you’re camber may be off to which will be corrected in an alignment

@toneabet62528 жыл бұрын
just the vid i was looking for! you might be able to help me.. when reversing or accelerating, i get a knocking noise which sounds to be coming from the front and rear suspension area. it only happens starting from a dead stop, when the car is cold. it also does it when sharp turning out of my driveway. if i've been driving around for a while it doesn't do it. its hard to describe, but the noise comes on strong when releasing foot from the clutch. it seems to be the initial inertia which puts all the pressure down on the suspension area.
@AutoInstruct8 жыл бұрын
If you said front only I would definitely point towards the strut tops - Front and Rear however is unusual.
@toneabet62528 жыл бұрын
ya, its a hard fault to diagnose because its so intermittent and hard to replicate. if have stock suspension, with peddars sports springs. 90,000km on the car. ss ve ute. im going to get some coil overs, and saw your vids which are a great help. was just thinking i could fix that noise in the same process

What is the size of the hex key on the top of the H&R coilover thread? With the H&R coilovers, did you find the orientation of the strut mount necessary? I have the same coilovers, and can't find an answer on the best way to orient the strut mount. I have mine angled in only one small way that won't rub my tires.
@AutoInstruct7 жыл бұрын
Hey, unfortunately I don't recall the hex size. Our standard Hex key set did fit. The upper spring seat needs to have the 'W' notch facing the engine bay (If that's what you're referring to?)
@95birdman7 жыл бұрын
Yes. When I installed H&R coilovers on my Pontiac G8 (VE Commodore), I could not align the W notch towards the engine bay because my tire rubbed the spring on the coilover. I had to use the "8 and 2oclock method", where the upper spring start is about 8 o'clock on the left side (my driver side, Aus passenger side) and 2 o'clock on the right side (my passenger, Aus driver side) in order to prevent tire rubbing because that is where the width of the lowest coil is the smallest. Any other strut mount angle would cause the tire to rub.
@AutoInstruct7 жыл бұрын
Oh I understand now. I believe the orientation stemmed from the upper spring retainer clashing with the bodywork in the wheel arch. If you're not having this issue it should be fine. Unfortunately the HR Coils are very wide, and use the large OEM spring retainer.
@95birdman7 жыл бұрын
I just took my coilover off and found my strut bearing cracked. I see GM has a orange and black strut bearing supposedly made for the VF Commodore, which is larger than the white and yellow bearing on the VE Commodore. Do you know anything about those?
@AutoInstruct7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, I am under the impression they're the same between VF and VE. I didn't think they were different sizes? The colours change between brands. Cheers.

Do you need to use a spring compressor? I'm upgrading from stock suspension to coilovers on my VE.

To change springs yes you will need a spring compressor.

You can replace the OEM Bolts with higher spec non-stretch or non-torque to yield bolts that can be reused.

good to know that all wrenches are spanners outside the US....except for torque wrenches, those are torque bars.... LMAO

Strange to know that a liquid is called a Gas within the US.. LMFAO We call it fuel, aka Petrol!
@nicodemus77846 жыл бұрын
Fuel is a correct term. Gasoline is a correct term, gas is short for gasoline. petrol is short for petroleum, which is crude oil. And yes American English bastardizes many things, but this is a case where I am baffled that the "queens" is so terrible. wrench is already a generic term for a category of tool. referring to all wrenches as spanners seems silly redundant.

If when getting those strut bolts out hold the bottom of the rotor and push up with other hand take bolt out , that way there is zero struggle with those bolts , also as well I don’t recommend leaving the ABS sensor lead in place I was grimacing watching it stretch ,, internally those wires can break very easily being stretched and you won’t know they are broken until you get an ABS light , this time you got lucky however don’t do that .
