That squeaking pen...
@volodyanarchist
@volodyanarchist 9 жыл бұрын
It is not a squeaking pen, it's the potential energy stored in glucose being turnt into the kinetic energy of the muscle fibres in the arm and hand, which in turn is transferred into the kinetic energy of the pen. And due to the friction forces some of that kinetic energy gets turnt into kinetic energy of the air molecules. The unfortunate thing for humans is that our ears pick up ear pressure waved at that particular frequency as "squeaking", but actually it's just kinetic energy being propagated through the air. Now all that we need to do is the ability to gather the "squeaking" and turn it into the rotary motion and we can move from powering automobiles by oil to powering them by squeaking. What a wonderful world it will be.

The lady physicist explains vectors in a pretty interesting manner: Take a hammer, a bendable ruler (or a stiff or rigid ruler), a band and a table, use them to balance the total force (as well as torque, even though she chooses not to explain it here. Torque is also a vector which is associated with rotation and any system of solids in a stable equilibrium requires also sum of all torques about any point to be zero!) Watch it! You will enjoy it! Suits high school as well as freshman students.

I will try my best to explain it, when an object is moving from a place to another, lets say 5 m backwards in 1 second, we call it velocity because as a vector, the velocity has 'length" or "magnitude" (how fast is the object, in this case 5m per sec) and direction (in this case the object is moving 5m per sec backwards). If we dont consider the direction of the movement or the dispacement, we just call it speed because without direction is just a scalar (just a quantity), so we wouldnt know if the object moved forward or backwards. I hope this helps, because as a non-native english speaker, it is a little bit hard to explain things without a proper knowledge of volabulary and grammar

"The handle of the hammer is being pushed up this way, it's bending the ruler, and it's forcing this end of the ruler down to the table." Actually, no. The force down to the table is always the weight of the hammer, string, and ruler, independent of the upward force of the handle on the ruler, which changes depending where the string is tied. It is true though that the forces on the ruler from the table, string, and handle produce moments (vectors!) that sum to zero. :)

A lot of people are surprised when told that the short wings on the tail of an airplane actually pushes the tail DOWN, it doesn't hold it up. This provides stability to the plane.
@Tjita1
@Tjita1 8 жыл бұрын
There are actually both designs. It's usually the way you describe though, since, as you said, it provides more stability. Sadly, it also provides more drag.
@erictaylor5462
@erictaylor5462 8 жыл бұрын
Tjita1 It does. Notes I said the short wings on the TAIL. Some planes have the main wing in the back with short wings on the front. In this configuration the short wings hold the nose UP. Note that it was in this sort of plane that John Denver was killed in.
@Tjita1
@Tjita1 8 жыл бұрын
Eric Taylor There are rear stabilizers with positive lift as well. In that configuration the center of pressure of the wing is in front of the center of gravity. Its a more dangerous design in that if the stabilizer stalls the aircraft will pitch up, further worsening the stall. Care must be taken in such a design so that the wing always unconditionally stalls before the stabilizer.

acceleration due to gravity is 9.81, only when you designate your coordinate system is the negative or positive applied. If I say positive y is up then an object accelerating downward has a negative sign, and vice versa. To show an object is `decelerating` as you stated depends again on your arbitrarily chosen coordinate system.

The flexible ruler didn't work as well because the hammer, while exerting the same force, had more room to go because it managed to push the ruler out of the way instead of being stopped by it. Being a lever, it also brought both ends of the hammer (and, therefore, the center of mass) closer to the horizontal center, so it had less room to play with when it came to falling off of the table.

Velocity is just speed with a direction. Instead of saying you are going 5 m/s, you say you are going 5 m/s to the right. (Further, as physicists we rarely talk about speed, we just use velocity. u is the symbol for initial velocity, and v is the symbol for final velocity. We can use this in various equations such as v = u + at.

She left out the force exerted by the table upwards on the ruler. If there were no repulsion by the surface of the table on the ruler then it would pass through the table. It does not. There must be a force pushing upwards on the ruler in order for the ruler to push down also and the sum of those two vectors is zero. Also, there is a rotational torque at play in there causing the rocking back and forth of the ruler+hammer system.

State your direction and describe that direction with a sign (for example left is positive). All things such as velocity and acceleration going to the left will be positive. An acceleration to the right will be shown with a negative sign and if an object is already moving to the left it, will be deceleration. Personally I find it helpful never to use the word deceleration: say acceleration and then state it's direction (after all it is a vector...).

you wouldn't know if an object was speeding up or slowing down unless you knew both the acceleration and velocity. If both are in the same direction (i.e. have the same signs), then the object is speeding up. If they are different signs, the object will slow down.

Depends on the convention you use. I would describe the direction of the force of gravity as positive, so that the falling apple's acceleration and velocity are positive. IMO it looks weird when you say that the apple's velocity after 1 second is -9.81 m/s. Though I can understand that when you're working on rockets you would define up as positive, and the earth's gravitational force decelerates the rocket. But not falling objects.

Physics relies on mathematics in order to express itself in a satisfactory concise and coherent way. On the other hand, it may well be that mathematics itself would not have gotten as far as it has without physics' inherent demand for it. So I guess I would have to argue that they are, indeed, equal, and that none of them would have advanced as far as they actually have. Besides, what does one get out of quarrelling, put spite and resentment?

In QM-TIMESPACE, vectors are e-Pi-i resonance imaging of multi-phase superimposed frequency interference, ..relative "chemical" compounding of axial-tangential timing quanta in the context of Eternity-now, ..identities of the Superposition-point seen as 3D Perspective, and perceived in imagination as time-distance vectors, all part of geometrical navigation in the image context here-now. Applying the "One Electron" Theory from the temporal Superposition-point here-now in AM-FM Quantum Information resonance processing projects the general visual cosmology of Timing-spacing interference in purely mathematical terms of ideal gas conglomerations that are the astronomical objects we see, using the same vector coordination techniques recognized as Polar-Cartesian phase-locked dimensional states. Vectors, time duration timing modulation rates of pure relative motion = "just another label" for act-tual existence.
