ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

@@sunriselotus oh it is coming into action but very subtly. The idea of advaita, the divine nature of man is in every aspect of human ethics and development in every society. But Indians can't afford to mimic the fallacious logic of the west and turn into clothed animals. And you can't possible expect the masses of India so long under the hypnotism of their own weakness thanks to priestcraft, foreign invasions and dualism to immediately rise to the level of advaita in a day. Instead of demeaning society, it's my firm belief that if people came forward and told the masses of their own greatness and the masses believed it, the whole country will turn into the Lord's own land like it used to be in the past and even surpass it in every respect.

Islamic Studies, Theologians quarrel but mystics speak the same language. If you see the quotes and teachings of Sufi masters like jalauddin rumi, Hafiz, mansoor Al Hallaj etc, all of them resonate with themes of non duality/ Advaita. There is a underlying unity which encompasses all living forms.

I find Ramakrishna's advice for redirecting desire and lust towards god to be so powerful. If such a feeling arises, I distill it down to its "active ingredient", so to speak, which upon some investigation is happiness arising in my own being - it never came from the object, it just seemed to. It assures me that the source of happiness truly is within. I can then let go of the object and let the distilled happiness that the desired triggered ring out like a bell in my being.

I am so astonished right now. This is amazing, the entire World can hear this and understand it, if only they let go of the Ego and expose their consciousness enough to understand the core of the human condition in every religion in the world, intellect and lower mind conflict...this is not something everyone can understand, but when you do, it's priceless! This is why the West (as political entities) has always been so deathly afraid of exposing its population to the philosophies of the East, specifically India. Once you're down the path to the journey to peace, love, understanding of every human's thoughts that lead to greed, lust, selfishness, the shell of a human we've all become- the universality of consciousness and religion is exactly why Vedanta is so impressive and why Americans are falling in love. This is 100% compatible with every religion in this world, because THIS IS AT the core of every religion of the world, and I can't believe our parents in the U.S didn't teach us these concepts, although it's mostly because they never learned it themselves. But, I'm lucky to have heard this now. Thank you Swami S!

My dear friend. Please don't be dejected. I also went through a similar phase just like yours but I have overcome to a great extent from my past tendencies and am getting stronger day by day. Yes the lord will accept you. He is born for the upliftment of the fallen. Plus its every person's birthright to attain moksha. All you have to do is pray for his help and it will come. But remember this brooding over your faults will not make you better. Talk not about your impurity but say that you are pure. Faults are many indeed, many people have many faults some more some less. But can fault cure fault? Can dirt wash dirt? Can a disease cure another disease? No and it never will. So never mind how much lust comes. If you are a devotee of your lord, have faith that he will cure you. Or else think that you are the Atman, ever pure by nature. Don't mind failures, they come to every ordinary human being who has just started his spiritual practice. Keep trying and you will surely succeed. Freedom is every man's birthright and what's stopping him from attaining it? Lack of faith. Thus have faith, tell yourselves day and night that you are pure and lust is just a false superimposition upon your real nature. The change will come slowly but surely. If this has been a deep rooted habit, it will most likely not go in a day. Avoid think which incite lust in you and read spiritual books like "practice of brahmacharya" by swami sivananda Saraswati and the complete works of swami vivekananda. Have faith in yourself

yes he did smoke, eat meat and was fond of ice-cream. But smoking was considered good for the body at that time, as for meat it was taken as prasadam from Maa Kali, any other form of meat was not allowed, as for ice-cream i don't see the harm in that... The thing is non-attachment not forceful abstinence... that is more harmful than useful... Viveka comes first... and i believe reading a biography of Swami Vivekananda will be very beneficial if you want to understand his immense personality a little bit... I don't mean to demean or anything in that sense, i just want you to see it in a different perspective..

Yet he was free from lust. Truly a divine being per say. Funny isn't it how his advice revolutionised a sensualist weakling like me more than any so-called spiritual masters? And eating vegetarian is anyway useless to stop lust, I tried it. So now I actually don't care what I eat as long as its not harmful for the body and mind for e.g. junk food. And I also know now how ignorant the whole country is compared to swamiji and sri ramakrishna.

Can meditation give similar experience as psychedelics? What i have heard is they give similar mystical experience like entering into another dimension with ones eyes wide open, colourful geometrically symmetrical figures and planes superimposed on our reality. People who had tried say those experiences are more real than this reality. I saw videos where terminally ill cancer patients were given psilocybin by researchers to reduce their anxiety and fear of death, upon administering they entered same colourful geometrical realm where they confronted their fear, and were no longer fearful, rather their ego was completely destroyed and felt no longer bound and constrained by their body and became peaceful with just one dose of those. I want to know whether enlightenment experience give similar effects as those? Superficially it seems kind of similar after reading several enlightenment experiences. Ramana maharshi suddenly became so afraid of death but he somehow managed to not panick and closed his eyes, in his mind he visualised his death so intensely that he attained enlightenment right then and there and remained as such. My point is it possible that somehow he accidentally produced DMT disproportionately in pineal gland or lungs or guts (it is said dmt is produced during near death so it gives NDE near death experinces, but it is not proven yet) and gave him those visions and became supreme being. Sadhguru was on a hill sitting on a rock suddenly he felt his consciousness was everywhere, in every particle of his surrounding. If they are similar then i have another question. There is no guarantee that by meditation one would attain enlightenment, very few people were able to achieve. But there is no denying of other benefits like calm and benevolent mind. But since my soul goal is enlightenment should i take psychedelics?

If you strive hard enough, anything is achievable. But if u get something so special in a short cut way, then it becomes cheap and obviously, its effect wont last which is opposed to getting enlightened in the natural way. Natural enlightenment is supposed to lead you towards vairagya..towards mukti... ultimate liberation and also permanently instill that sense of oneness. But a psychedelic could give you the experience momenatarily and it will not last...pulling you down to the mundane drama of the mind and body after some time. And, to get that experience again, you will again take the psychedilc path and so on and so forth and finally land up in a state of hopeless addiction which could drive you insane because what is reality and psychological will get mixed up and u wont be able to differentiate between the two( exactly the opposite of what happens after natural enlightenment). It might give you a temporary, short time experience but at the same time, it will damage your body and mind beyond repair impairing your functionality in every other sphere of life. My point is - short cut is never the answer my friend. Intensify your longing to know. Just seek. A guru will appear and guide you. Please dont waste your precious life by taking the easy (and undeniably "nerve-wrecking") path. I suggest, please watch the following video- kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2mwiZZ4lpZqr6c

@@shreyasn3078 i watched the video, he said both experience are different. I really hope what he said is true as there is no way to verify these. Earlier I was little disheartened by the notion that they give similar effects, as those experiences are merely a byproduct of interaction between neurotransmitter and visual cortex and various receptors responsible for emotions like love and hate. People born blind don't show similar results on these same psychedelics, they can't even dream visually because of their underdeveloped visual cortex. I wish transcedence to be more than just a state of overclocking of ones brain as it kind of defeats the purpose.

I understand realisation came to Ramana Maharshi as the natural state, unsought. His death experience was part of the sudden transformation. You should not seek a "similar experience", through what you apparently know is a delusional device, that usually produces terrible after effects. Here , we can be guided to use the life experience to find the Real .

22:03 Guess such a weird thought spoilt the health of a close relative of mine... Please don't joke about matters of the health... There are people who do such insane worldly things in the name of Non-Dualism, when it is actually clearly a worldly desire becoming an addiction and spoiling their health. How can people who are actually spiritual enough not want to give up these things? In the past, it had been taken for granted and sometimes unnecessarily glamourised. It's time to stop it now, atleast in spiritual places which are actually supposed to teach such things deeply... Edit after watching the whole thing: More stress should have been laid on devotion and/or other spiritual practice applied to overcome the weakness. People easily misunderstand😕

I am confused please help … This is a great video. The confusion is that Swami is giving advise on to how to lead a good life but if the real ‘I’ is pure consciousness then who is this advice aimed at? There is no local I to follow this advice. This is what still confuses me about Vedanta.

This advice is aimed at the false "I"( my body, mind and intellect), so that I can realise the true "I" ( the pure consciousness).

But swamiji I have found patanjali's yoga sutras with the commentary given by swami vivekananda in Raja yoga to be the most helpful in this respect when combined with telling ourselves that we are the ever pure Atman, its impossible for me to do anything wrong like swami vivekananda said in his lectures(The Open Secret (volume 2 complete works)and One Existence Appearing as Many ( volume 3 complete works)) it really does help. In my opinion the cultivation of bhakti is really slow except without chanting the tarak brahma naam but jnana is the most straight forward for it can be practiced anywhere, even if a man is present at the bottom of the ocean, the top of the highest mountain, anywhere anytime. So for me I believe Jnana is the best method. 🙏🙏

You seem to be a rationalist. Very good. But I will ask you one question. You are asking why for a being who is beyond reason. How do you expect an answer if you have a wrong question? God never created evil. Its we, the human beings who have created our Hells. And thus it's our duty to make this world good again. Suffering is a delusion. Pleasure is a delusion. All impermanent, making slaves of men. Stand up and assert your freedom from all this bondage.
