ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Even the mystical understanding of Christianity (not the doctrinal driven approach) comes close to Vedanta. All religions are like wells that try to drink from the water. Each has it's own flavor.

Islamic Studies, Theologians quarrel but mystics speak the same language. If you see the quotes and teachings of Sufi masters like jalauddin rumi, Hafiz, mansoor Al Hallaj etc, all of them resonate with themes of non duality/ Advaita. There is a underlying unity which encompasses all living forms.

@@sunriselotus people are never taught about advaita. But it's gradually coming to the masses nevertheless. The change is very slow but it's happening anyway.

@@sunriselotus oh it is coming into action but very subtly. The idea of advaita, the divine nature of man is in every aspect of human ethics and development in every society. But Indians can't afford to mimic the fallacious logic of the west and turn into clothed animals. And you can't possible expect the masses of India so long under the hypnotism of their own weakness thanks to priestcraft, foreign invasions and dualism to immediately rise to the level of advaita in a day. Instead of demeaning society, it's my firm belief that if people came forward and told the masses of their own greatness and the masses believed it, the whole country will turn into the Lord's own land like it used to be in the past and even surpass it in every respect.

As a recovered alcoholic myself, I relate very strongly to Girish Gosh. Not being an alcoholic, the Swami doesn’t quite understand the miraculous nature of God removing the obsession to drink, it’s not a small matter. To quote Jesus again, “What is impossible for man, is possible for God”.

I find Ramakrishna's advice for redirecting desire and lust towards god to be so powerful. If such a feeling arises, I distill it down to its "active ingredient", so to speak, which upon some investigation is happiness arising in my own being - it never came from the object, it just seemed to. It assures me that the source of happiness truly is within. I can then let go of the object and let the distilled happiness that the desired triggered ring out like a bell in my being.

I am so astonished right now. This is amazing, the entire World can hear this and understand it, if only they let go of the Ego and expose their consciousness enough to understand the core of the human condition in every religion in the world, intellect and lower mind conflict...this is not something everyone can understand, but when you do, it's priceless! This is why the West (as political entities) has always been so deathly afraid of exposing its population to the philosophies of the East, specifically India. Once you're down the path to the journey to peace, love, understanding of every human's thoughts that lead to greed, lust, selfishness, the shell of a human we've all become- the universality of consciousness and religion is exactly why Vedanta is so impressive and why Americans are falling in love. This is 100% compatible with every religion in this world, because THIS IS AT the core of every religion of the world, and I can't believe our parents in the U.S didn't teach us these concepts, although it's mostly because they never learned it themselves. But, I'm lucky to have heard this now. Thank you Swami S!
