"The mind is the cause of the objects of perception. The three worlds depend upon it. When it is dissolved the world is also dissolved. It is to be cured (i.e. purified) with effort." Inspired by the 4th chapter of Yoga Vasishta Sara (Nectar of Supreme Knowledge), Swami Sarvapriyananda speaks on concept of Dissolution of the Mind.

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Infinite Love to you Swami-Ji . . . I regret that I wasn't aware of the Vedanta Society while living back in New York. One of my silly, small dreams is to meet you in person if ever I return to the States even for a short trip. When the sometimes pomp conceit of Raja . . . .and the thunderously burdensome (yet oh so fun) path of Karma Yoga wear at the fibers of my Soul . . . I turn -time and time again- to the poetic elegance and grace of your beautifully crafted Jyana Yoga teachings. Deepest thanks and lots of Love to you Brother.

What helped me in my sadhana was to take the teachings literally. It sounds silly and too simple, but it works wonders. Earlier I used to analyse a lot and was disconnected from my immediate experiences in the hopes of understanding reality. But eventually it hit me that reality is something to be experienced, and we are doing that anyway. We only need to be aware of it. And there is no technique to it, you have to take the teaching literally, not merely as a nice teaching to help you. You are brahman. Not metaphorically, you literally are brahman. In fact the mind is what is metaphorical, and the physical body is simply a vessel for these mental archetypes to express themselves. But reality always remains untouched, and that is you. Don't even think that we all are one, because that makes us believe there are others separate from us and that there is some common substratum. No, only you are. Your substratum is not brahman, YOU are brahman. The personality and body is superimposed upon you and an appearance, literally only appearing to the senses. Fear, anxiety, lust, jealousy, happiness, excitement, grief, etc are mental perceptions triggered by the physical body. You anyway cannot avoid them nor hold onto them, because you have no relation with the body and mind. But the body and mind are very intimatley related to you. Whenever you feel small, weak and powerless, it is because you are using your senses to look for evidence of existence-consciousness-bliss. But senses will always perceive only boundaries and limitation. This fundamental shift in the way you live is to be done literally and practically, that will give you true understanding, mental masturbation won't help after a point. Do not delay awakening to the simple truth of brahman, jump into it right away and let go. Let your sadhana be done by ishwara(through the natural workings of the body and mind), you can be carefree and without worries.

Here's the quote Swami "Maddam, be broad minded; always see two ways. When i am on the heights i say Shivoham Shivoham: i am He, i am He!' and when i have a stomach ache i say "Mother have mercy on me" Vivekananda So basically turning to the personal God in times of difficulty.

@@thrinethran2885 probably certainly true regarding vasanas and desires. I know in my own case I had practiced meditation a couple of hours a day and much more on retreat around the same time as I was encountering Vedanta. This is some years ago now. I had a couple of moments in meditation when the body was completely relaxed and the mind resolved in such stillness that it was almost an effort to return to any awareness of the bodymind. Afterwards many of the truths of Vedanta started to become absolutely clear, primarily that what I am is never an object. The whole teaching of the seer and the seen was rock solid and has remained so. Same with non doership (because obviously i the Self do nothing), though aware of actions being performed, they aren't mine, so no identity gets picked up as a good doer or an evil doer. That was very freeing. Although I wasn't formally meditating so much after that another dissolution occurred spontaneously that resolved this lingering fear of death or disappearance. The states seem to exist and cease to exist in me, but I never come into existence and what I am in myself is fullness, lacking nothing and even if the whole world disappears i never do. That was revealed and not just some intellectual conclusion. So not to bore you too much with my story, what I'm driving at is although I guess dissolution came easy in my case and there were certainly liberating breakthroughs, I still suffered a degree due to residual vasanas. I once went to one of those nadi places in south India because a friend wanted to go. Anyway, they told me that I'm experiencing amrita (deathlessness) which was true because I realised the unborn deathless nature of what I am. And they said whenever you want you can be absorbed as that, but some time (12 years hence) you'll be properly detached like a dew drop on a lotus leaf and teach love without attachment. At the time i was shocked, because what more does one need than to know one's immortal Self nature.. but no I had various difficulties even after that and it was only after having cherished attachments broken that a new truth started to dawn. That when I'm not attached to anything in particular then Love is always present and for all. It's the particularising of Love that was the hindrance. The insistence that I need this particular relationship or this particular circumstance to be be happy means I am destined to be unhappy, but if I have no such insistence and I have the faith that God (satchitananda) is enough and all desires offer nothing essential that isn't already here, then gradually we can be free of the allure of desire. I think this is where devotion helps.

@@thrinethran2885 In my own case I practiced meditation for hours a day and more during retreat around the same time as i was encountering Vedanta. So when dissolution occurred during meditation the truths of Vedanta started to become firm knowledge. Even when I stopped meditating formally dissolution wasn't finished with me haha. So somehow Tatwa Bodha and dissolution are intimately related in my case. I don't know how much God is needed for meditation, plenty of religions like Buddhism practice meditation but aren't necessarily interested in God. Where God helps a lot I feel is in the realm of desires and residual vasanas. I remember once I went to some nadi place in the south of Tamil Nadu not long after I had this breakthrough where I lost the fear of death (since I was never born) and they said you're experiencing amrita (deathlessness immortal bliss) and you will be able to be absorbed as that whenever you like.. but 12 years hence you'll be truly detached like a dew drop on a lotus leaf and teach love without attachment. So this became a kind of koan I guess.. what is unattached love. I don't know about teaching but what happened was I realised I couldn't attach to the people and circumstances I loved even If I wanted to.. and after some devastating heartbreaks in life the clouds parted and it dawned that when I'm not insisting life be any particular way, that I need anything or anyone particular then my love isn't particularised and is always present. Hard lesson and much easier with God, because God is the fullness, the reality and bliss that is now, which the allure of desire only promises to give us, but can't.

Without discovering who I am, and wanting to know about the universe and God, I find myself in the strange and curious situation of wanting to know about everything else without knowing who wants to know. I am not two, one to know the other. It's really about discovering, removing what covers. I can, apparently, cover the sun with the palm of my hand. But that hand is only seen by me because of the sunlight. Likewise, I only perceive theories, beliefs and concepts - which seemingly cover the infinite light - because of that light itself. To see the sun, I need to remove my hand from its position in front of my eyes. To see the infinite light, it is necessary to remove, by understanding the facts, the superimposition which is beliefs, theories and mental representations. In this case, seeing is being. It's a great adventure, which, initially, can cause fear. But this fear also subsides.

Jiddhu Krishnamurti did not say, "I don't care what happens." He said, "I don't mind what happens." This is an important distinction because not caring sounds hard hearted. That, alone, can provide an excuse for the ego to reject everything else he taught.
