Pure Consciousness is NOT the knower,it is the mind which plays the role of a knower and it can't play its role without the energy provided by Pure Consciousness.But mind is inseparable from Pure Consciousness,unlike the pot full of water that reflects the sun.Therefore when we say "I",we mean mind plus Pure Consciousness.But unless and until mind is clean, the Pure Consciousness doesn't reflect fully.When the mind & intellect become clean,the Pure Consciousness is reflected fully,which means knowledge of Swaroop or enlightenment. My interpretation or understanding is as follows: • Object = the known • Perception = the knowing • Subject = the knower • Being = Brahman -> the "witness" or "consciousness" The "object" is an appearance that is known to the "subject" thru the knowing of perception. But the subject is ONLY a subject **in dependence upon** the object and its knowing thru perception. The subject can only "exist" within a co-relational dependence upon the object during perception. Unless there is the perception (knowing) of an object (known) there can be no subject (knower). In the absence of an object (the known) there will also be the absence of a subject (the knower) due to their mutual arising (co-relarional dependence). This state of "co-relational dependence" is a manifestation of consciousness we call "Brahman." Brahman - which is beyond the duality or multiplicity of "subject, perception and object" - is the "consciousness" in which the triad of experience (subject-knowing-object) takes place. 🙏

We normally take consciousness as a quality that caharcterises a sentient being, rather than its being an entity by itself. So why dont we see ourselves as an entity with consciousness rather than consciousness itself?

Bhagawan Ramana used to say one interesting thing while discussing on the Seer , Seen and the process of seeing the World via Body , Mind, Intellect, Ego and finally how the Self is at the substratum of all . He has compared this to a Movie Screen, the Projecter, Film and the Electric Current. That tiny ray of light which hits the big Screen and brings about all the fanfare is compared to the Consciousness. The paradox here, he avers, that we too are in the midst of the screen enjoying as well as crying over the fanfare that's reeled out in the screen, our Self , which is the substratum [ Witness ] of all the activities [ shadow based, ofcourse ] in this mela.

Pure conciousness is what is, the unchanging. It is witness consciousness.And we are all that. This is pure wisdom....... or Paramatna. Now like in the example, Sun gets reflected in a pond. Here the Sun is Pure & its image in the pond is reflected or relative consciousness. This relative consciousness called the image of the sun ,with a veil of Illusion( Maya) together creates Jeevatma. So the Jeevatma is the one who ( the seer) sees(the process of seeing) things( the seen) . While the witness consciousness is Pure wisdom ( parabhratma) the relative consciousness is( jeevatma).....when jeevatma becomes free from the veil of Maya ( jeevan mukthi) becomes one with paramatma....

Swamiji, with the utmost of respect may I ask whether it would be right to say as follows: Consciousness is like electrical energy. With the help of this energy, the mind is the knower. But, the electrical energy itself does not ' know' anything. It is 'Nirgun' or without any attribute. Namaskar I am not sure I understand this explanation If I have ABHAS CHAITANYA reflected consciousness then I am not THAT Just like moon light is reflected sunlight. The unit of my physical body and mind. intellect,Abhiman and Chitta etc are not Consciousness , then how can one tell me that I am not REFLECTED consciousness but I AM THAT -TAM TAT ASI I am not REAL THING and so I am not the KNOWER The sad part is we will never KNOW. The examples are good but they are more confusing. It is like telling Moon that you are Sun If I am not the real consciousness why am I told that I am BRAHMA ?I know Swamiji does not read these comments and so there is no way to get answer DIRECTLY from him -the same way that REAL consciousness does not care what the reflected consciusness and the physical unit of mankind does !!

Your question is not clear. I will try to answer from what I understood. You are not the reflected conciousness because the pure conciousness manifests through the instruments that is body , mind and intellect . Through this manifestation , there is "I" aham/ego that is created which is a perciever, the feeler and the thinker . So the knower is the Aham. Aware of the objects he percieves, aware of the emotions he "sees" building up in the mind and the thoughts he "sees" in the intellect. Our aim as an individual is to move this aham over the vrittis /impressions/ tendencies and purify the aham so that the instruments reflects the pure conciousness as it is. ex) Mirror if its dirty, it has a hazy image of you, distorted image of yourself. If it's sparkling clean then the image reflected is you without distortion. Then image in the mirror is you. So when aham is purified it is brahman. So still remain the perciever, the thinker and the feeler but manifestations comes through in the purest form. I hope i understood what you asked and eventually was able to clear it

Thanks for the reply. My question is I AM THE BRAHMAN or AM IA REFLECTED BRAHMAN. I can not be brahman - There is difference in JIVATMA and PARAMATMA . When examples are given we talk of BORROWED QUALITIES . The example that he gave was that of a potato in a pot of water which is being heated . The potato is hot but it borrowed it from the hot water which borrowed it from hot pot and the FIRE is the one which has the REAL heat and not borrowed . So all my actins and experiences depend as much on my physical astral; - causal bodies as they depend upon the REFLECTED CONSCIOUSNESS. So if I am a borrowed CONSCIOUSNESS then HOW CAN ONE SAY TUM TAT ASI or AHAM BRAHMASMI. What happens when PHYSICAL or gross body dies - what leaves - what happens to the REAL CONSCIOUSNESS if that is in me . The reflected one will not be there if the pot is broken or the water is gone when we are talking about reflection of the Sun as the example . Anyway I DON'T KNOW and don't think I will ever know . I think here the "Atman" as in verse 7 of Mandukya Upanishad- an attempted "Atman" definition gives the answer- neither inwardly conscious, nor outwardly conscious, neither a combination of both, and so forth ... one begins to understand the Atman, so, the "the seer, the seen and the act of seeing are all seem invalid- fir that ti hapoen the "Indriyas" need to be turned "ON"....

Consciousness sleeps. The self is aware. This is consciousness. In meditation there can be conscious awareness and unconscious awareness. As consciousness is awaken to the self, the body goes limp; a bag of rags. Then we have clothes which fit over our bodies as we work to maintain life beneath the roof under which we sleep. This building and this roof; we fit our lifestyle around this house. This is our awareness. Yet our consciousness has more contact with the external world than just clothes and houses. We have knowledge. Then, knowledge of self. The cycle herein becomes fully immersed in the blood of the mind. Somehow the universal blood is second in measure relative to the bloody mind. Somehow second!! "Excuse me for yelling " This is the self which we don't care to be aware of. We all suffer through a contaminated field of thought. A vast cloud of samskara.
