Ultimate! Thank you, Swamiji ! : ) 04:37 Why spiritual life Source of peace and joy 08:05 Paths: 1. Faith (Belief based, Devotional) 2. Yoga (Technique based, Patanjali) 3. Self-enquiry (Knowledge based, Who am I, Advaita) 14:14 Vivek (Discernment between eternal and non-eternal) Vairagya (Dispassion for non-eternal) Shad Sampati (Six fold treasures: Calmness of mind, Control of senses, Withdrawal from external engagement, Focus on self-enquiry, Spiritual steadfastness, Faith in teaching until realization) Mumukshatvam (Intense desire to be enlightened ) 16:15 Methods of self-enquiry (mentioned in texts of Advaita vedanta) 3 states of mind Avastha traiya vichar 5 layers of human personality Panch kosha vichar Seer and seen Drig Drisya Vivek 18:55 3 stages: The process of self-enquiry 1. Shravan Knowing... (Systematically studying the subject ) 2. Manan Understanding... (having many questions) 3. Niddhidhyasana Meditating... (assimilating) 6 techniques of meditating mentioned in Drig Drishya 22:48 Self-enquiry method 1 Drig = Seer Drisya = Seen (Forms) Eg. Eyes Pen Seen = Many, Different, Changing Seer = One, Same, Unchanging Ditto for ear & sound, tongue & food ,... all sense organs... Best teaching method: From known to unknown Moving from outwards to inwards i.e. Inner Experience ... I am aware of my own eyes. Can I blink... yes. Now... the eyes can be "seen" Who is aware of the eyes. The mind is aware of the eyes The eyes are no longer the seer... they have become the 'seen'. Did I listen Did I understand Is it my experience The mind becomes the seen. Lets call the seer a witness (Sakshi) The thoughts, ideas, desires, feelings... am I aware of (contents of mind)? If I am aware of this (contents of mind) 'seen'... then there must be a seer... something seeing this 'seen' This seer must be different from the mind. 16,000 thoughts a day in mind. One witness of 16,000 thoughts. 39:33 Very important insight eg. I am miserable. (mein dukhi hoon) If you can see the misery you are not miserable... ! You are the seer !!! Its similar to an object you can see. eg. Sunlight and visible dust floating in sunlight Freedom from mind ! : D In short form: Seer Seen Seer sees the Seen ---- ---- Eyes Forms Eyes see Forms Mind Eyes Mind sees Eyes Witness Mind Witness sees the Mind I am the Sakshi i.e. witness of my mind !!! 58:21 Saying in Vedanta: You get what you already always have You get rid of what was never there You get rid of that which was and is never yours (You get rid of problems!!!) 1:02:43 Kapila said 1000s of years ago: Prakriti & Purush Nature & Consciousness 1:04:04 What's the relationship between You the witness consciousness and all things that you are experiencing i.e. Consciousness and Matter 4 approaches One approach: Matter creates consciousness Second approach: Matter is produced by consciousness (Theistic religions) Third approach: Neither created the other (Sankhya and Patanjali's philosophy) Fourth approach: All matter is an appearance in consciousness 1:28:00 One Consciousness Maya = Time Space Causation (Cause & Effect) desh kaal nimit * Thank you, Swamiji... Vedanta NY... ! Blessings !

The path of Self-enquiry is only for those equiped with the four means of salvation known as: 1. Viveka-discrimination between Sat (real) and Asat (unreal). 2. Vairagya-dispassion or indifference to sensual enjoyments herein and hereafter. 3. Shad Sampat (6 virtues): (a) Sama-peace of mind through eradication of Vasanas. (b) Dama-control of sense organs. (c) Uparati-satiety, renunciation of all works (Sannyasa). (d) Titiksha - forbearance. (e) Sraddha-faith in scriptures and the Guru's words. (f) Samadhana-concentration of mind, balance of mind. 4. Mumukshutva-Intense longing for liberation. "Not an iota of spiritual progress is ever possible unless one is really endowed with these fourfold qualifications." ~Swami Sivananda

You cannot understand this without deep contemplation in solitude. Hearing swami over a year, I just didn't get it. I used all my scientific and philosophical tools to understand yoga. It was only when contemplation flowed naturally, that I understood it. Feeling is the highest form of education/enlightenment.

I think the important question is "can mind become the witness ?" Acc. to the teachings of Guruji, like the eyes are different from the objects similarly the mind is different from the witness. Experience is perceived by senses and mind and yet we want to experience the witness that cant be experienced through this senses and mind. Meditating just increases the calmness of the mind and that is the closest experience the person can get of the witness and yet how powerful the experience of meditation is. What is enlightenment like?? I ask myself, as enlightenment cant be experienced so how can someone perceive something that is unperceivable. It is said Swami Vivekananda attained enlightenment, acc. to this lecture I find it impossible for the mind to perceive the witness thus, enlightenment seems an impossible and non-existing task. "I am not the body and I am not the mind " #best statement to describe the witness for an individual.

After watching this video twice yesterday and marinating in the juices last night, I awoke with one question for Swamiji: Why would maya tell awareness identified with maya the way to freedom from maya? Especially when maya borrows it's existence (supposedly) from existence (consciousness) itself. Which sounds like a parasite. And this dialogue sounds like the paranoid mind (and I know - the awareness is identified with the paranoid maya of the mind). But the argument that the spiritual path of the seeker improves one's daily life can be countered with the (subjective) argument that it actually keeps one mired in the samsara of oscillating between presence and personhood, which a constant rollercoaster. It seems the only way out is enlightenment, which the chances that happening are extremely slim.
@shenth274 жыл бұрын
Excellent talk by swamiji as usual. I think the reason most people don't get enlightened is because that'd be the end of human civilization. Because once you get enlightened, your perception to this material world would be different. You might still continue to live the rest of your physical life; but since you realized your true nature you'd feel less attachment to the world because you know it's an illusion. Then most likely you wouldn't have next life with the absence of desires. And I don't think the creator would would want that completely. There's a purpose for this physical universe, which according to my Vedanta understanding is that; it enables the Brahman to experience the world, through his physical manifestations.

I am curious and I am sure many others are too. The core philosophy of Advaita Vedanta is experiencing Brahman. Most likely through self-enquiry by direct method. Not sure how long the other method "devotion" works or not. The late Ramana Maharishi was a big proponent of self-enquiry and so is the Ramakrishna Order, the four Adi Shankaracharya maths etc. How many people have experienced Brahman via direct method? How long is the average training of self-enquiry to experience Brahman take? These are fundamental questions. I hope the experts here can answer it. Perhaps the experts can find out and reply here? I posed the same question to the Ramana Maharishi ashram folks but did not hear back.
@david2033 жыл бұрын
While it is true that the Yoga Sutras talks much about extraordinary experiences, particularly samadhi and the siddhis, or special powers, its basic practice is turiya, or transcending, which is a simple and natural process that brings subtle experience immediately and improves all aspects of life right from the beginning by the systematic elimination of vasanas/skandas, which are inner stresses stored in the nervous system. All of this philosophy becomes practical through paths such as Natural Stress Relief (NSR), which is an effortless type of meditation that brings the fourth state of the physiology and of consciousness, a unique state of deep rest. The practice of NSR is not only compatible with advaita vedanta, it helps fulfill it quicker and deeper.

Self-enquiry is for all, or all are capable to follow the path of Self-enquiry is a false concept which appeals very nice but has nothing to do with reality. Sri Ramana Maharshi says: 'Only to such a mind which has gained the inner strength of one-pointedness, Self-enquiry will be successful. But a weak mind will be like wet wood put into the fire of jnana-vichara.' Sri Ramana Maharshi says: 'If the aspirants have not one-pointed mind, which is possible for him who has pure mind full of sattva, dispassion, discrimination, etc., Self-enquiry is impossible.' 'It is easy, the concentration on the Self, for him who has qualities like dispassion, discrimination, one-pointed mind, renunciation, etc. For the rest, it is either less or more, depending on how much one has these qualities. For those who are not prepared, it is very difficult, if not impossible.' Question: “is it possible for all people to hold on to that path of self-enquiry?” Answer: Bhagavan: “It is true that it is only possible for mature minds, not for immature ones. For the latter, repetition of a prayer or holy name under one’s breath (japa), worship of images, breath-control (pranayama), visualising a pillar of light (Jyotishtoma) and similar yogic and spiritual and religious practices have been prescribed. By those practices, people become mature and will then realize the Self through the path of Self-enquiry. ~ Extract from “Spiritual instructions” Sri Ramana maharshi.

“I” am not the knowledge, I am the awareness of that knowledge of “I”. But, that “I” am aware of the knowledge, is a knowledge. It is a knowledge that I am aware of. I am aware of the knowledge, that “I” is a knowledge that I am aware of. Or, is it an awareness that I have the knowledge of? If I didn’t have the knowledge of the awareness, then could I have the awareness of the knowledge? The awareness has no knowledge. The knowledge has no awareness. So, I must have the knowledge, that “I” am not the knowledge, but the awareness of the knowledge of “I”. How is this not sophistry?
