The primary percussion instrument here is a Mridanga, I think. In the past all Indian music used it as the percussion instrument and the Veena as the primary string instrument (Saraswati the goddess of music is always depicted with it). Later, Hindustani (North Indian tradition) developed with a mixing of Indian and Persian music and the Tabla and Sitar came out of this experimentation and became the primary instruments for them. The Carnatic (South Indian tradition) continued with the Veena and Mridangam. In the Hindustani tradition, the Dhrupad category of music still sticks to the Mridanga and hence is used when an ancient and historical feel is required. It also helps the primary Tamil audience connect with it because they are more used to the Veena and Mridangam than the people outside the South.

In start of the song, ARR credited it to a style of Hindustani Classical called Drupad. The beat is atleast 1000 years old but the style is atleast 400 years old

Loved your insight into this masterpiece!! ❤❤ Just to give context into what the song is about: The lyrics are praising the strength and might of the Chozha king, and is leading up to his coronation. It is also talking about the love between him and his queen in the "bridge" (why AR chose to change the scale there, to reflect a softer, loving vibe). Then reverts back to talking about his victories in the war etc. I loved how AR switched it back and forth. Hope this clarifies the context of the song 🙏🏽

Splendid Directions given by Mr. Mani Ratnam and almost all characters (Main or Side roles) have worked diligently to make this movie Extravagant, Picture-perfect and hence a grand Success... Great team work... In Pooniyin Selvan Part 2, the icing on the cake was the amazing music given by Mr A R Rehman. Literally his tunes played with the audiences' mind taking them directly to the Land of Cholas.... In short... A piece of Art... Simply phenomenal

.There is something called Chhandas in Samskrit. It refers to the rhythm in recitation of words. Tamil had it before Samskrit possibly. In Samskrit it was flushed out extensively into many many numbers and types of beats, like the English pentameter. This style of singing with emphasis on numbers of syllables per line and emphasis, utilizes the concepts of Chhandas in the recitation of mantras....all of which are old, one posits, most respectfully 🙏🙏

And Sitar is a mix of two instruments, an instrumentalist at the Court of Mughal Emperor Akbar combined Veena and Tar of Persia and brought it as sitar. If you listen closely to tar it will definitely make a sound like sitar.

I love this song so much. A R Rahman is a SPLENDID music director. I feel so related to the Cholas. 😂 Guess Why? Because my Surname is Karikan. Maybe my forefathers when arrived in South Africa spelt the name as Karikan and not Karikalan 😂. Just joking. But it is nice to have a name that is so related to Karikalan. Greetings and love from South Africa ❤❤

@@theacechip ik bro but i m talking the percussion instrument. Ram Sundaram the origional commentor in this thread said that the percussion instrument is Mridangam but i think it's Pakhawaj, since Pakhawaj is more prominent in Dhrupad tradition. Thats the conflict here, not whether It's Dhrupad or not, coz everybody unanimously agrees that it's Dhrupad. it's not even a matter of debate.
@theacechip

@@hsthast7183 It is a bit difficult to discern. Pakhawaj has a a bit more bass I think while mridangam has more flex in the mid tones.

@@theacechip ya n that's why Pakhawaj is preffered in Dhrupad coz it's bass heavy. In fact the description section of the Tamil version of Veera Raaja Veera, they credit Pakhawaj so I guess the issue is now settled.
