Eggplant is also called aubergine or brinjal and is one of the most popular vegetables used in cooking around the world. It is also relatively easy to grow and plants will bear fruit for several months in the right conditions.
Our first update shares how our first crop at Westgate was transplanted from nursery beds in November 2021 and then nurtured for the next four weeks.

I have been watching your videos for a while now. i'm from Liberia. with the shadenet, do you think it's better to use rain gun as compare to the drip irrigation in vegetable farming?? sometimes workers don't pay attention and a break on those drip will have a greater effect.. also, what is the size of your vegetable farm??

Hi Paul. The choice of which type of irrigation to use is different for everyone. I especially appreciate the issue you raised about workers having to look after and monitor them while in use. We have a few sprinklers on our farm, but generally opt for drips first because they are the most effective at water conservation and place water directly where it is needed. Our staff are constantly supervised and held to account where they fail. But that depends on the size and scope of the farm. Our farmnis quite large and we are rapidly moving towards semi-commercial status. So we have quite a large workforce and enough people to deploy to specific tasks. Next year, we are going to massively expand the area of onion grown, which will probably mean having to move beyond drip irrigation and try some sprinklers.

Thank you for the video it's is so educative. I have developed interest in growing eggplants and currently I have started quite small. I wanted to find out if you do sell seedlings? I have kind of hit a snug with the nursery that I made the germination was so poor. Nevertheless, I have continued to manage the few plants that pulled through. My aim is to upscale the number of plants hence my request for some seedlings. I will be glad to hear from you.

Hi Ba Wilfred. We haven't grown eggplant for most of this year. We loved the crop, and it's easy to grow. It helped us get our confidence back after the onion disaster of 2022. But the price has been stagnant for a long time. So we shifted more into high value veg crops that you will see on our more recent videos. We always grew our own eggplant seedlings. It's quite straightforward as the crop is not as difficult as pepper, etc. All the best.
