Hi Mary- it has certainly been some unusual weather. We had a light frost this morning and looks like we'll probably get 3 more frosts this week! My 'last frost date' is supposed to be May 4th... and this is why I never plant out warm season crops till at least the 15th 😆. I hope for your sake the weather levels out soon- I know that dragging containers in and out every night & covering everything is NOT fun. Take care & enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for showing us around. Your gardens look great as do your plants in the green houses. The story about your struggles with the rabbits was enjoyable to listen to even though I know it was frustrating. I had a surprise last season when I discovered something had ate several of my cucumber plants. I checked our security videos and found we had a ground hog visiting the garden at night and I guess he had a taste for tender cucumber plants. It's always a challenge to deal with pests and critters. I hope you have a great Mother's Day weekend and take care.

Thank you! Sorry to hear about your cucumbers. I'm just waiting for the ground hogs to find me! They're bad at my parent's- they like to take one big bite of the tomatoes that are still on the plant and just leave them. Then you go to pick this perfectly ripe lovely looking tomato and realize the whole bottom is rotten...argh!!! It is definitely always something. I try to tell myself it's good for me-- I'm always kept on my toes and always have to learn & adapt! Just found another nest of bunnies tonight in my strawberry patch 🤣. Take care!

What a beautiful garden! Great tour too. Rabbits in the garden? We have a barn full lol. Twelve years ago they competed in Columbus at an ARBA show. When I was a kid, we would go to Van Wert, probably spelled that wrong, to visit my cousins. That would have been late 50's to early 60's. I would marvel at what seemed like miles and miles of white wooden fences. And beautiful horses too. Congrats on your garden! Take care!

So jealous of all that space! I'm in the suburbs of SW Washington State, but you wouldn't know it from all the wildlife. I think our bunny problem is worse due to the fact that the coyotes rarely come around. I think you are on the right track if you put chicken wire around the bottom of your fence and maybe even extend it out onto the ground for about another foot to keep them from digging under. Low voltage electric fencing has worked for me in the past, even kept the big racoon from digging up my freshly planted melons for a second time.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
I think sometimes the critter pressure in suburban areas is actually worse than in rural areas. It makes sense that with no coyotes your rabbit populations would soar. I thought about electric fence, but opted against it since I have young(ish) kids... didn't want to take the risk. I'm working on putting some chicken wire out today! Thanks for watching & enjoy your week!

Hello Jenna, Richard Hart again. I now seek out your videos because your explanations are accurate and simple to follow. However, I would like to know if you have compost piles and is your garden completely organic. I am sure if I further pursue this you probably have a video on it. I also just ordered the fabric covers. I am jealous of the size of your garden, I only wish I had that much room. Thanks again.
@GrowfullywithJenna2 жыл бұрын
Hello Richard! Regarding compost- I am currently a 'lazy' composter. Meaning I throw all my compostable materials on to my large compost pile or in one of the 2 bins I have and let it sit (no turning or covering or fussing with ratios of material). It takes longer this way, but turns into compost eventually. This year one of my goals is to work on more efficient composting techniques, as I need a lot more compost than I am currently creating. I don't currently have any videos on composting- but hope to share some this year. I am not 100% organic. Some of my inputs are not certified organic- for example, not all of the seed I plant is organic seed (because a lot of the seed I grow is trial seed sent from other companies/breeders, I plant whatever they send). Also, some of my inputs are not certified organic- for example, the mushroom compost I buy in bulk to supplement my homemade is not certified organic. But I do try to be as 'organic' as possible. I will not use synthetic fertilizers or chemical sprays in my garden. Any products that I use for treating pests or diseases (which I don't like to use unless I have to) are going to be OMRI approved or naturally derived. I hope that fully answers your question!

A good trick to warm up your soil is actually cover crops or let it grow weeds. It's a thing that's not very well known, but plant roots are warm coz they shelter billions of bacteria and other soil life, which warm up your soil. I've noticed last year that if I plant in beds that are full of wood chips, the plants get a late start. But if a lot weeds have grown in this bed, with the woods chips, and that I weed out the bed and plant in this, I get a much stronger start for my crops. Farmers around France who do "living soil gardening" IE with a thick layer of mulch all year round and no tilling, usually use commercial black plastic tarps, coz it warms up the soil quickly. But that's not an option in most private gardens. Just like you though, my cabbages have a huge number of pests, but mainly cabbage shield bug (eurydema ornata) and pigeons who eat the leaves. Netting is too fragile and expensive for me, so I only grow cabbages in the fall and winter, when those pests are gone. I find though that a good trick against pest, if you have room in your garden, is to plant what they eat as cover crop. For example, slugs love brassica leaves. So you just sow canola as cover crops and they'll eat that. I tried it and it works. If your rabbits like chard, maybe let a few grow to seed, and you'll have a huge number of seeds to make a bed full of them for the bunnies. I usually find that the more plants you have, and the more biodiversity you have, the less pest problems you get. Of course it's very hard to do in some areas... I would love a pond in our urban community garden for example, but it's impossible.

I'm amazed at how big your spring crops are compared to mine. I'm in zone 6a new hampshire and I planted a lot of lettuce and spinach and carrots in mid March and they are well behind yours. Did you start in the fall or something? What is your secret?
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
I did start some in the fall, but most of the greens that were fall sown have already been harvest and/or bolted (with the exception of that Red Velvet lettuce at 02:06). The carrots you see at about 09:46 were fall sown. Most everything else that you see was sown this spring. I do use frost covers over a lot of things early in the spring (which are subsequently swapped out for the insect netting you see in this video), and that does keep the plants a few degrees warmer, which may help them get a jump start on growing in the spring. Keeping all my soil mulched and/or cover cropped and raising my planting areas may also help to warm the soil just a smidge. The varieties I'm growing may make a difference too. I'm testing out a lot of newer hybrid varieties, which often exhibit much more vigorous growth under adverse conditions than some of the older open pollinated varieties. And, even within the same Zone, we all have our own little microclimates. I am surrounded by woods and quite protected back here where I am gardening. If you are in a more exposed area, that can make a difference too. Take care & best wishes for a wonderful garden this year-- I'm sure those crops will catch up in no time!

Yep- we had a light frost last night and are supposed to get down to 34 tonight and 3 days next week. My 'supposed' last frost date is May 4th-- and this is exactly why I don't plant out my warm season crops like tomatoes till at least the 15th! All the veggies that I have out in the garden now will sail through frosts with no problem. Stay warm, take care & enjoy your weekend!

Oh man I feel your pain on the killer bunnies (lettuce killing bunnies, that is). At our old home, I had a very small garden that I had a makeshift fence around. The same thing happened to me. The momma bunny felt safe and had babies inside. Now, Momma bunny was respectful of our crops. She was content to stay just outside of the garden area, and eat clovers. Her CHILDREN on the other hand were quite rude and disrespectful! They would eat my chard while staring right at me! I'd try to shoo them away...🐰🥬. I tried spritzing them with water in a spray bottle...🐰🥬... 😤...just rude, I tell ya! 😄

I feel your pain! They also got into mine and I had to relocate babies as well. Tried to block off holes until my husband can replace it but in the meantime they got in again and mowed ALL of my broccoli to the ground!!! What’s weird is they left the baby celery alone that was right next to it and left my brassica bed outside the garden alone. 🤷🏽♀️ I had them covered with netting as well because something was eating them but when they continued to get eaten I realized it was slugs and so uncovered them. So stupid of me! It just happened yesterday so I’m still kinda crying inside lol What do you use for your hoops? (Never mind, saw your link!) I have the same type of netting but I ruined it by cutting it to fit my beds and I just secure it with whatever I have (rocks and such) which means it’s often resting on top of my plants.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear this! It's so very frustrating when this happens. We were having some trouble with slugs under the netting at my parent's as well, but I had good results dusting the plants and surrounding dirt/mulch with diatomaceous earth. The only trouble is you have to reapply it every time it rains. But even just doing 1 application seemed to slow the slugs down quite a bit. I'm glad you told me about cutting your fabric- I considered doing the same thing, but will avoid doing so now. I use fabric pins to secure my row covers. I used to also use rocks & boards (and still do sometimes), but find the pins are easier & more efficient to deal with and do a better job securing the fabric. I hope that you don't lose anymore plants to the bunnies. I also hope that you enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Please tell me how you get your spinach to grow so well! Mine sprouts but never gets very big, even when I plant a variety that is supposed to get big.
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pamela, I have the best luck with spinach when I start it indoors and set seedlings out really early in the spring. I started a batch on January 21 and another about a month later and transplanted them out at the beginning of March & the beginning of April. The spinach that I direct sowed is not doing nearly as well. Another tactic that has worked well for me is sowing spinach in the fall (usually late September) and leaving it covered all winter with a fabric row cover. I take the cover off early March and those seedlings usually do great! I also find that they do not like heavy clay (which is what my native soil is) and try to plant them either in my raised beds or in the areas of my garden where I've amended and loosened up the soil the most. I also mulch them heavily (typically with grass clippings) to keep the soil cool & moist. One other point- spinach likes soil that is neutral/alkaline (my native soil is)- if your soil is more acidic, adding lime to bring the pH up may help, but I recommend testing your soil pH before going that route! Hope this helps. Take care & have a great weekend!

I was thinking about using cover crops before warm season crops but I wondered if the decomposing material might limit nitrogen during the warm months. Has that not been an issue for you?
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hayley- great question! I've not noticed any issues with cover crop residues tying up nitrogen as they break down. However, with some green manures (especially those that produce a lot of residue- think rye, sorghum sudangrass...) there may be a short period after termination when nitrogen will be unavailable to the following crop. If this is a concern, it is generally recommended to wait 2-3 weeks between terminating the cover crop and seeding your 'cash crop'. I hope this helps! Take care & enjoy your weekend!
@Hayley-sl9lm3 жыл бұрын
@@GrowfullywithJenna Thanks so much. Curious though, are yours overwintered or no? For me I'd only have two months if I started in early spring (and then there would even be less time if I'd terminate 2-3 weeks early). Would starting in the spring really get you enough biomass? I mean I guess that's enough time for pea shoots to grow without flowering so makes sense...
@GrowfullywithJenna3 жыл бұрын
@@Hayley-sl9lm The covers you see in this video were all planted in the spring, with the exception of that patch of vetch. I will be cutting down that long strip of mix (oats, vetch & peas) to plant tomatoes in a couple weeks to plant tomatoes. Since I am utilizing this more for weed suppression than I am green manure, I am happy with the amount of growth it has put on already. I lumped the radish row in with the mixed cover crop row in the video, but I misspoke. I won't mow those down- and I won't do it in time to plant warm season crops. That row will be ready in time to plant fall crops. In general, you're better off planting your cover in the fall, allowing it to overwinter and terminating prior to planting warm season crops, if you want to achieve optimum growth and biomass. Rye, winter wheat, oats, vetch, winter peas, crimson clover will overwinter in many growing regions. I also really like to plant radishes in the fall - they typically winter kill, but by the time they've all rotted away in the late spring, the ground is nice & loose and ready to plant. I also tend to throw cover crop seed out anytime the soil will be bare for more than a couple weeks- even if I don't have time to allow it to grow to its full size. This is because, again, I'm using the cover more as weed suppression than anything else in these situations. I hope this makes sense!
